Constructing Fish Tanks in High Tunnel Greenhouses

This video was shot at the Kentucky State University High Tunnel Complex. High tunnels are relatively simple greenhouse structures commonly used to extend the growing season of crops. In this video Dr. Andrew Ray describes some large fish tanks that have been constructed with wooden frames and rubber liners. The fish tanks are being used to grow tilapia, with the goal of getting market-sized fish in one growing season in Kentucky. Time-lapse and underwater video footage help to illustrate Dr. Ray's points.

If you circulate your water IN the greenhouse and aeriate the water from within the greenhouse the tanks are heat sinks even when in ground.

I want all that high tunnel space for plants the fish can stay underground and water temp is easier to regulate. Give us an update. Try one tank underground.

Why wouldn't you also cosider using the water from the tanks to flow through a piping system for aquaponics to feed the plants and also filter the fish waste, basically acting as a biological filtration system for the tanks to supplement the filtration system you have to be utilizing currently for the tanks. Waste water fertilize the plants, plants remove nitrates and nitrites from the water and return to tanks.

Great idea. My son owns a koi breeding farm in Hanover PA (Hanover Koi Farms) and I think he'd be really interested in some of your ideas. He's already build his own tunnels, but I'd like to see a lot more details on how you're building your fish tanks. Especially, how you're connecting your cables to keep the pressure in check. Do you have another site showing a closer look at you building these structures?
