Groups in Germany have tried for years, but couldn't delay construction any more so the factory is soon to start production on this Danish paid for tunnel. I do hope to be able to drive through I'm 71 ;-)! Why waste time waiting for a ferry, when You are on the other side, mostly before entering the waiting area for it!

Because a ferry is more unique than a boring tunnel.

I hope, the connection on the German side will be ready on time.

@@Rainbowroad12345 For years we had ferries sailing across Storebælt, and I have been waiting many, many hours to be able to cross, during the years! Also coming home from Belgium on a late Sunday evening, after having been driving through Germany all day, and with hardly a ferry sailing, because traffic was limited to the times with much/more traffic!!!! And the least thing you wanted, was having to wait for a damn ferry, to be able to go home!!! Today, the time to optimally arrive before the ferry sailed, is the time it takes to pass the Belt!!

And this is why I much prefer going across Storebælt, to go home, than driving to Puttgarten to wait for a ferry, though it is shorter than the longer road!

And after that quarter of an hour to be able to drive aboard the ferry, it would take a full hour to sail accross the belt, as also over Roedby - Puttgarten today! And if we had intended to drill the Tunnell, we could have passed the Fehmarn also to reach the mainland, and having left the inhabitants on the Island to be able to dance, sing and drinking beers in Lederhosen!

And no, it most likely won't be free to use "ever"! But may, as the Storebælt Bridge, become less expensive to use, than the ferries are today, if as hoped for, the traffic will become more than expected? When making an enormous investment like this, you need customers/someone to pay for it, and a too high price will make several go up Jutland and avoid paying for a transit from Rødby or Fehmarn. It will be a balance to find, also to eventually be able to keep the ferries sailing from Gedser to Rostock.

When can this be expected to be ready for commercial use? 2025?

I predict this will be one of the first roads in Europe to ban ICE cars & trucks (i.e. ones with with Internal Combustion Engines).
@isaks7042
@isaks7042 3 жыл бұрын
Why?
@GustavSvard
@GustavSvard 3 жыл бұрын
@@isaks7042 It is a long tunnel and thus the exhaust fumes are more of a problem in it than on surface roads. Even with all the ventilation built into it, getting rid of ICE exhausts would likely drastically reduce the levels of poisons in the air down there. That said, it likely won't happen til a significant % of cars/trucks are non-ICE.

@@GustavSvard Also electric cars and lorries are allowed to pass, if they are able to drive that far, without being charged. And pumping fresh air through the tunnell may hardly be a problem today.
@GustavSvard
@GustavSvard 3 жыл бұрын
@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 If they are able? All electric cars on the market have been able to drive that far on one charge for at least a few decades now. The risk of running out of fuel might be higher for ICE cars now, since there's quite a few old ones on the roads with fuel gauges that aren't all that good ;)

@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 As for the air quality... The similarly long tunneled Stockholm western motorway will have recommendations to turn of all air intake into the car cabin when driving in it. I.e. don't take a motorbike down there. It'll be legal to do so, probably, but the air... yikes.

Only a matter of time till mother nature floods this tunnel in an earthquake or volcanic disaster. Grate engineering though.

Shame that this tunnel is coming. A ferry on a train is way more fun than a crappy tunnel. Besides there's more polution when diesel trains and cars / trucks are riding below the sea than ferries which are above.

Oh, You are still able to waste Your time on a ferry , as I suppose that the ferry from Gedser to Rostock may still be sailing? As on Danish Storebælt, we still have ferries sailing to both sides, for those wanting bad coffee and a waste of time.

Post Post Not if the government decides to continue with benzine, diesel engines. And if it will change then its gonna be Thorium and not Electric
@Rainbowroad12345

Post Post I haven't been talking about Norway or Denmark, but more global. Lets take the US for example, which wont force transport to be electric. And this could happen anywhere in the world. Idk if Norway got a left wing government that support this green fairy tale it could end in a matter of time when nationalistic parties will win. And hopefully this will happen next year in my country so we can enjoy the present. Thorium (core energy) is wat better than electric windmills on sea or any other electric thing.

@Post Post We have a museum for trams, but when the supply is in the road, so that You don't waste hours by charging batteries between driving, it may be so?
@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188
@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 3 жыл бұрын
@Post Post Yes, today we, in Denmark have large ferries which are driven by batteries! But they sail a constant distance and may be charged at intervals when/while in the harbour. And in a car, You don't just go to a tank and fill up with electricity - 5 minutes, if the capacity is low (My own, very economical, minor, and very efficient diesel car is able to drive a 1000 km before filling the tank again, and it has a modern type filter on its exhaust! It also uses a "Blue, manure additive" as the most modern version trucks)! But I knew a man, driving some 40 kilometres to work (driving electric trains!) every/most days. And he had sun-panels on his roof and a possibility for charging at his home also, besides at his workplace, DSB garage! But when rain and frost, he did experience difficulties being able to reach his targets, because his battery-capacity became much more limited in la low temperature, also using wipers and heating, to keep his winows free from ice and snow! A hybrid car may be fine, as it is able to drive even without the use of a battery?
