Good morning from Germany again. It's that time again, a new episode of my favorite series and of course I'm looking forward to it. I wish everyone a lot of fun watching and everyone stays healthy. I especially wish our Hospital Construction all the best. 001

Thanks for another great episode. I think this chapter approach works really well at this point. It's good to get all together a piece of work that's spread over a number of days.

If this building leaks, I'll be really surprised!! With the amount of sealant and barriers!! Its going to be nice to see what goes on the "fangs" to finish the building!! Thanks for the work on recording and putting this on KZbin each week!!

During my 40 years in construction I have never seen such a screwed up job! It should not take months and months and months to flash and weatherproof the exterior of a relatively small structure. The architect did an extremely poor job because nobody seems to know how to do it! It should be clearly drawn out in the prints. Truly embarrassing.

Do you feel like the guys doing it now don't really have their hearts in it? They only seem to work up the courage to attack it again every few days. Maybe because experience says it will get taken down again when it's shown to leak?
@robertshaffner7073 жыл бұрын
@@constructionwatcher5381 YES! If an architect is going to call for some ridiculous and unorthodox design feature he should include details of how to make it work. In my opinion, this situation calls for an integrated system of either welded aluminum or soldered copper that will last for decades! I realize that is a little old fashion but what they are doing now with these so-called modern materials simply is not going to work! And of course these days it only has to last until they get paid!😂

Miss one detail on that insulated wall, boys, and the old folks who go on to live in this glass box might feel the brutal San Francisco cold seeping in!

Is anyone keeping track of how many layers of flashing, tar paper, and caulking is around these fins? :)
@sydneyshinshi3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that. I feels like they have about 20 layers on by now.
@constructionwatcher53813 жыл бұрын
@@sydneyshinshi There may have been that many layers applied, but sometimes they scrape all the old ones off, so not that many still on. :-)

Anyone understand how that water main connection is made? It looks like they are installing a giant "T" fitting in the main line. So did they have to shut off the water in that block to do it? I thought there were systems that let you install a fitting around the main, then drill a hole in it with the water on, but that doesn't seem to be what they did here.
@HospitalConstruction3 жыл бұрын
They had to shut down the water to the assisted living building next door, which is why they had to do it at night. There is a myriad of pipes, old and new, under the streets in San Francisco. For the past couple of years, they replaced all of the water mains under this street (before the bus lanes were built), and for the most part they never had to turn off any water. I once asked a worker how they did it, and he said they are almost always able to find a temporary alternate route for any water mains they are replacing, so they rarely have to turn off any building's water.

@@HospitalConstruction They have systems to do live connections for the majority of circumstances. Look up "hot tapping" Water, gas, etc.

@@tedgerstenslager2949 Thanks. I know I've seen it before but didn't know the term to look it up. Seems like for some reason they decided that wasn't the best way in this case.

Not only that. And not for the first time, by the way. And what's more: they've spent ten years to place these wall parts and now they have to remove them again in order to correct the content. Sloppy work.

It's common to use a notched trowel to put down adhesive under flooring or behind tile. The amount required depends on the finish material, the nature of the sub-surface, and other factors. By choosing a trowel with specific sized notches they can regulate how much material is left on the surface. But in this case they then add a different material on top of the troweled layer which I've not seen before.

Yep, municipal workers at their finest. The same no matter where you go. Attempting to move sand off of asphalt with a round nosed shovel...... juking concrete with a broom.... And as far as the caulking goes, I hope it has a bond, rarely did I see any prep or cleaning of substrate or aluminium with a solvent wipe or a brush.
@constructionwatcher53813 жыл бұрын
The guys caulking the joints in the concrete wall sections used a brush. I never say the guys doing the windows use anything.
