I have a 2013..at around 100k miles...It started burning oil and blowing grey smoke out of the tail pipe. I finally got them to cover it under extended warranty but it took some finagling. Honda didn't want to cover it, but a local Garage found the warranty extension for me and I went back to Honda. They finally agreed and replaced pistons..o rings..all kinds of stuff. Saved me about $3000 to $4000! Thank goodness. Runs great now ever since! Tho... the engine light has popped on and off from time to time ever since.

How do I find the warranty is it public? My garage I take it to hasnt been any help.

Yes just run something like a CARFAX and it will show the date first sold and then do the math. Don’t be afraid to call the manufacturer if you feel the issue is related to an inherent defect

@@RANDOMFIX The issue is definitely faulty piston rings. I bought the car used 2 years ago and have had hell with it the last 8 months. I don’t think I have any type of warranty so I’ll have to pay myself to get the ring issue fixed or replace the entire engine.

You need to call honda of America and let them know that is an inherit defect from honda. Start that conversation with them asap. Keep me in the loop.

I just keep putting oil in it. I keep a close eye on it. When I first baught it the engine died completely and they had to replace it under warranty. I'm planning to trade it in soon....

@@RANDOMFIX Honda in Selma replace the block, rings, valves, and head gasket. It drives like a dream now getting above normal MPG. I wonder though, is it a matter of time when it messes up due to bad Honda design?

Well the car is running like a car with 0 miles. They changed a lot including the CAT and they said they'll do it again for free as long as it's before 2020 when it breaks down. That is sweet.

Same here. Mine 2012 . At 49k got head gasket replaced because I told them it was burning oil and at 55k engine making noise and still burning oil . Finally until the engine was misfiring they replaced short block . Was at the dealership for 40 days. The car has 162k miles now and no more issues of burning oil . Dealer fixed under warranty. Since this model has So many of same issues I wish they would reimbursed me the money I paid for the extended warranty since they sent out a letter that they are extending every insight owner 8 year warranty since time of purchase. Not fair for me .

Thank you for sharing and I took have the experience with no continued oil burning. As far the service contract there is really no way to get a refund there as the service contract carriers is independent of Honda motors warranty extensions unless you purchased the vehicle from Honda and can show that extension data was already available to public. Please note the service contract generally covers a lot more than a specific warranty extension on a factory defect.

Jessley, It is recommended you replace the rings and seals but you want to make sure the to inspect the cylinders in case the there are other underlying problems like a scratch cylinder. Can I ask why you feel you don't have a warranty? _RandomFix

RANDOMFIX . I am in Mauritius. I brought a reconditioned car. So you don't buy from honda. Honda don't bring honda insights to mauritius. My vechicle just got towed today. The oil is going in my spark plugs and damaging then. Having misfire. Now will have to order seal etc tomorrow and wait for 1 month..

Mauritius, you don't have to purchase the Honda Insight from Honda to warranty coverage. Unless the vehicle is salvaged I would pursue Honda Motors of America. This is a known defect and just like you I didn't buy my Honda brand new or from the Honda Dealer. Evelyn, The vehicle in the video was my mom's car. I don't have access to it currently but if your experience a loss of oil great than one quart per 1,000 than you have valid claim against honda. Now when you tell them about this concern of yours what they will do is to change your oil (you will have to pay for this) and in case the honda dealer was over filling the oil so to even the playing field I suck the excessive oil and drove the vehicle one thousand miles and took it back to honda and that's how I go the repair covered. I have almost 6yrs with my car and I just be aware of the TSB few minutes ago. 84k millage so, i will call the dealer but I’m sure that I will have no warranty 😡🤦🏾‍♂️

I have a 2013 insight that I just bought from a private party. Took the car recently for a road trip and did about 1200 miles. This thing burnt 2 quarts. I took it to the dealer today to address the issue and was told my VIN was not part of the recall and the warranty won't cover it. Any suggestions or advise on what to do next? Thank you.

They didn't even tell me there was a recall, a lot time honda will call it a tsb ( technical service bulletin). Only when I point out the defect did even care. Then I had prove the vehicle was burning 1 quart per 1,000 miles. Honda had to change the oil for them to make it official but what I found was every time the oil was a little over filled. Check out the website I gave you earlier and you get lots of info. Honda has had problems with the piston rings for years.

You did say the cost to fix yours was over $3k but these are dealer prices and I am pretty sure they added some unnecessary components to be changed just so they could milk that cash cow.

The reason due to the oil seal ring at the piston uses single layer that causes the engine oil to go into the the cyclinder that burned the into it and causes it be overhaul.

However never stop fighting, call the 800 number for Honda customer care and express your frustration and let them know how you feel. Honda knows about this defect. Honda dealership confirms I'm using 1.5qt per 2000 miles in my 2013 Insight (60K miles). So it's not covered. Yesterday, car broke down on the road due to fouled plugs. And now you have me worried for my catalytic converter. If anybody here has ideas for convincing Honda to cover the cost of replacing the plugs which were fouled due to, imho, high oil consumption, I'm all ears. ;)

Just wanted to give you a little clarity when I picked up my honda from the dealer for the oil consumption test they oil was a little on the full side. yes I own one it started burning oil at 5k I checked was 1 quart low at 80k 2 quarts low getting worse I expect its cheap oil rings probably using Chinese parts.

Rayan, you need to have Honda take responsibility for the repair as its a known defect. Let me know if you need anything else and yes Honda will make it hard for you to claim it's their fault but I did it and so can you. The dealer I brought my car to finalize the oil consumption test tried at all cost to avoid the warranty repairs. They said I must replace the engine (since piston #4 caused damage in the lower engine bay...)and offered one for $15,900! They added that Honda would've covered some of the cost for that repair ($11k) and I would cover the rest. Since I just bought the car, I told them I could not afford any additional costs and will take the risk for them just to proceed with the recall. The car sounds and drives great now.

This 2013 Honda Insight is a disaster and Honda knows it. We have gone 'round and 'round with the dealership about this POS. They "fixed" it ($1400), then it started doing the same thing about 800 miles later. They want us to tow it to the dealership, then pay $250 for an "oil consumption" test, then another test, then they MIGHT reimburse us for the first repair. They should be made to pay for all the costs. If that wasn't bad enough, we actually bought a 2017 Honda Accord and it had engine issues. (Surprise! How stupid were we to buy another Honda?) It cost $1400 to replace levers that lift the pistons. That was 6 months ago, so I am holding my breath. I am so DONE with Honda! I had a chance to buy a nice lawnmower for a nice price, then found out it had a Honda motor. NOPE! Don't care if it is just a lawnmower. WILL NOT BUY IT OR ANY HONDA AGAIN. EVER. Burned twice, shame on me! BTW, if you live in Oklahoma, don't bother looking up the "lemon law," as it is the worst in the country. Sorry to rant, but I wanted to warn others about this problem and hopefully save other car buyers a lot of money!

Unfortunately they don't make them, I looked around and couldn't find any. I tried Hastings piston rings that says it's for this motor and it doesn't fit. Tried the dealership and they only sell it as a kit per cylinder.

I think the repair over $3,000 now, update: Honda is honoring the repair but you need to call Honda Customer Care not the Honda dealer.
