Regarding some of your issues, here is my view (I got my Model 3 4 months ago) 1. I see no reasons why controls for adjusting side mirrors staying in a menu would be a problem - you set them for your driver's profile and forget about them. I see no reason for manual controls for things I am likely to adjust rarely). 2. I am happy with the automatic setting of wipers, but for things like that, the car also has voice commands - no need for manual controls, IMO. 2. The rear-view mirror is IMO irrelevant - I have been using rear camera view instead ever since I got my Model 3 3. Key card - it is only a backup and anyone with an app on their smartphone doesn't need to deal with manually locking/unlocking their Model 3/Y (in 4 months I have only used my key card when I was showing the car to others). 4. I agree that suspension should be a bit softer 5. IMO, wind noise is not an issue (on Model 3) under 90+mph 6. IMO a HUD should be at least an option 7. I agree with your issues with blind-spot monitoring and IMO the car should have a Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Like all automotive journalists, they tend to notice odd things that a lot of us wouldn't, by dint of testing lots of different cars in a short time, and having lots of different people in them adjusting things. But this does let them identify things that aren't "intuitive" (recognizing that a lot of that is from learned behaviors in other cars), and paging through menus to adjust the thing I can see and reach RIGHT THERE is one of those. And while it's not a huge deal on the side mirrors, that vent control is both silly and annoying. Also, the point about why not have the rear-view mirror be automated to driver profiles also makes a lot of sense to me. We switch drivers all the time in my house, and it would be nice if the car could adjust that automatically too.

If you are interested in having all of the buttons and knobs, then it's not the Tesla experience. The a/c vents, no buttons for the mirrors and steering wheel adjustments are what makes the Tesla later model cars "a Tesla". These along with regenerative braking are unique to the Tesla experience. I would never turn off regenerative braking or go back to traditional buttons and knobs. I bought a Tesla Model Y for the Tesla driving experience. All of it. Nothing less. The uncluttered, sleek and futuristic look and feel is 2nd to none. Operating all tasks from the screen is the best idea for a 21st century driving experience. Somewhat like the SpaceX capsule. Centre mounted dials or screens are not new. Citroën and Toyota had many models with centre dials and screens only years ago. They abandoned the idea because people hated it. Tesla does it not to set trends. But for cost cutting. Having a non existent interior and one screen means conversion from left to right is simple and so is production (and even then they can't get it right). If they were setting trends and they were so dead set on having just one screen, the model s and X would also only have one. But they don't because they're more expensive. So don't kid yourself. agree mirrors are adjusted once so it's not an issue. but having no speedometer in front of you is. some cars half the price have a heads up display whereas here you have a luxury car without a speedometer. i don't care what you say i know the real reason for it - it's to differentiate Model Y from Model X and Model 3 from Model S. We have a model 3 and a Model Y. Some of the issues you guys bring up are similar to those brought up during the Motorola flip phones when the iPhone was introduced. Some of the features where we see a lack of knobs or buttons are items that are mostly set and forget on Teslas and phones today. I am a relatively seasoned UX engineer and one the things we consider when designing a human machine interface is frequency of use relative to the prominence and positioning of user elements, buttons and functions. For example, how often does one adjust all the functions of a car like cabin temperature or auto headlight dimming? Teslas have a feature where all car settings are remembered for you -- including mirrors, A/C, driving features, breaking etc all except for audio settings. So you don't need every knob available for every setting. When was the last time you adjusted the vertical hold on your TV? I am probably 20+ years older than you guys. I do believe us old guys need to employ someone in their twenties to compliment your guys' analysis as they have different ideas than us older folks. @Jakub Janovský Mentions the points very nicely. 1. Voice commands are such an under reported feature for teslas. There are so many functions it can do. 2. Were the presenters complaining that the stop on traffic light feature is improving with new updates!!!! Come on. So they do not like the feature as it was initially. When new updates improve it then also they have an issue with that. Tesla adding and improving car via OTA is an amazing and unbeatable point ( as of now at least). 3.For adjusting the HVAC ( even including the airflow) voice commands work. So unlike traditional vents you do not need to move your hands from steering wheel. 4. Also mirror adjusting is done once for each profile and that is it. I also have not done adjustment ever since i saved my profile.And this car can save way more profiles than the measly 2 profiles merc and others give you. 5. Fair point about the suspension. But i guess since tesla wanted to make this sporty ( and also the heavy weight of car ) they did that. Model S and X have air suspension I believe hence they are softer. 6. Fair point about the no blind spot indicator on the rear view mirror. But the presenter missed that Model 3 st least warns audible chimes and on screen Red warning if there is a car in blind spot and car is shifting lanes. However next few updates are going to enable side repeater camera on screen when turn indicator is turned on , similar to honda systems. 7.I have used Key Card once when I wanted tocheck whether they were paired correctly. Unlike other OEM these cards do not cost hundreds. Just 35USD. A physical key fob is available for 150 USD for those who like that.

I have the 3. Ride and noise are valid criticisms, key card and menus aren't. The key card is for backup if your phone dies or for valets, you never use it otherwise. The phone is the key, the car detects your Bluetooth and unlocks. It just works. Controls that are on menus are also accessible by voice. You want to adjust your mirrors, turn on the wipers, change the AC or heat, just tell it by voice, your hands never need to leave the steering wheel. The blind spot detection is also fine. Your problem is that you drive five different cars in a day so you cant adapt. If you owned a Tesla you would check the screen before deciding to change lanes, it's only if the lane next to you is clear do you look over at that lane and start to make your turn.

I just got a Model Y, and after driving it for a week I have to wonder what these guys are smoking. Key - yes, the card key is annoying - if you use it. The reality is you never use it. You set up your phone and then leave the key card at home. If you really want a FOB, you can purchase one separately, but the phone is incredibly convenient. My Audi has a standard key fob and I far prefer the model Y’s system. Also, consider this: If you lose a key fob to any newer car you’re stuck paying several hundred dollars for a new fob and to have the dealer program the computer to recognize it. No such issue with the Tesla. Screen - I was worried about having the screen (and speedometer) off to the side. I got used to it in less than a day and the reality is there’s no difference between looking down between my hands vs to the right of my right hand. The advantage of eliminating the regular dashboard is that the dash in front of you is lower, giving you a clearer view of the road. It’s also nice having cool air blowing straight at you from behind the steering wheel. Controls - Definitely a bit of a learning curve, but after a couple of days I found the controls to be quite intuitive, and there isn’t much you really need to use the screen for. My wife tends to have a hard time with technology and I was actually a bit worried about her but after she sat down and spent 10 minutes playing with the system she said she thought it was easy and said she wouldn’t mind getting one for herself! Mirror adjustments - totally agree with @prijicrw’s comment. The Y remembers settings for various drivers, so you have to set the mirrors once. The side mirror even angles in and down when you put it in reverse. The same is true with the steering wheel adjustments. Bottom line: these guys seem to be making mountains out of mole hills and their comments make me wonder how much they actually drove the car.

Also your flip phone didn't update and change how it works but the iPhone does and it's a HUGE improvement. The Tesla updating how it works is a good thing. The incremental updates allow for testing and teaching the AI Model otherwise they can't ever get to full self-driving. Really seems incredibly short-sighted. If this is a dealbreaker for folks they shouldn't buy the car (honestly not buying a car because you didn't like the stalk operation is extremely petty. Humans inherently dislike change. Everything is going digital. Blackberry died because it had analog controls when Apple went full digital. FSD and traffic light gets updates and changes the "driving experience" because it's learning. We, the humans, are training the program to drive itself. Know what you are driving. It's not a normal ICE car. It's a new experience.

Even when Apple made their main interface entirely digital, they still kept some physical buttons because it only makes sense to have those controls remain analog. 4:53 I can object to it not being an actual SUV all day long if I have to pay an extra $10k for what is effectively a hatchback version of an already existing car. As opposed to the difference between the civic sedan and hatchback, which I think is pretty minimal by comparison. Yes, this is not just a tesla thing (literally every automaker is doing it), but I'm not shelling out that much more money for the same car with more head room and a hatch, that probably should have have been on the model 3 in the first place. my point is some of these crossovers are just too much money for too little improvement.

24:01 to the guy who's got a model y on order, if you can maybe cancel your order and wait and see for the Mach-e. it's the closest competitor, and it looks like it will do everything the Y will do at a similar price. If you test drive the Mach-e, and don't like it, you can always reorder your model y. for my next suggestion, I'm going to assume you want a similar price and space, but are willing to forgo the blistering performance. the Kia Niro EV is also a pretty good option. it's down on range, but some limited data I have suggest that the liquid cooled (or heated) battery is better at keeping the range "stable" meaning you'll lose less range over time and if your climate is too hot or too cold. Consumer reports if you have conflicting data, please correct me. while I can't vouch for the ride personally, I understand it's pretty smooth. if you are willing to spend more money and get something that, got a great ride, great features, lots of space, but less range than the Tesla, you could also consider the Audi E-tron. it fits your criteria, but it is way less valve for money than the tesla, and I don't know if you want to spend that kind of cash. of course you could also get a used one in the same range as the model y, if you are willing to go that route.

As someone who's owned a Model 3 for over a year, I'm not sure why you guys keep bringing up "issues" that are really not. 1) Door handles - these are purposefully built to be aerodynamic. They probably add a few miles of range. After using them for a week they are dead simple to get used to. 2) Physical mirror controls - I haven't touched these settings ever since I bought the car. They are saved to my profile, so why would I want random buttons in the cabin that I'll never use? 3) Physical vents - You can't really compare Tesla's HVAC system to other cars, it's just so different in design. I feel like the long vent allows more diffuse airflow, whereas most cars have small vents which you have to keep adjusting to point at what you want. Also, without an instrument cluster, you have the benefit of airflow coming straight through the steering wheel in front of you. How would I adjust this vent in a physical manner? Would you rather reach your hand through the steering wheel while driving? 4) Key card - I see so many reviewers complain about this. This is not an issue for people who actually own the car. The keycard is a backup you keep in your wallet (don't need to carry a fob, which is amazing). 99.99% of the time, your phone's bluetooth connects automatically and you just get in, drive, get out, walk away. No unlocking or even locking necessary. This is a feature, not a bug. Hell, you can buy a normal key fob if you really want. Honestly as a long time consumer, you guys seem to think that driving a Tesla is like driving any other car, and it's simply not. I use Autopilot 99% of the time on highways, so I don't even really care that I have to adjust some things on the screen. Hell, even on inner roads that are clearly marked and straight, I'll use Autopilot briefly if I need to adjust the settings/navigation. Sure, Navigate on Autopilot doesn't work perfectly in heavy traffic scenarios, but I've used it on long road trips with light traffic and it's a godsend. The self-driving tech gets better all the time, yet you guys seem to keep moving the goal posts. The fact of the matter is you simply can't get these kinds of features on other cars.

The complaint about the lack of a binnacle under the steering wheel is tired. Did they complain about the Mini's speed gauge in the middle of the dash too? It also sounds like they never bothered to learn the thumb wheel or voice interfaces. This car UI is far far better than more buttons that only get used a couple of times a year. Why change something that isn't broken? That's pointless. The one screen thing is not for ergonomics or anything else other than cost cutting. With one screen and a non existent interior that's symmetrical in layout, that means conversion to right hand drive cars are simple and then production is simple (and even then they can't get it right). If the one screen thing is so fantastic and tesla is dead set on it, the model s and X would be so too. But they're not because they're more expensive cars. Citroën and Toyota had many models years ago with centre only dials and screens. They abandoned the idea because everyone hated it.

I think what you guys are missing is that the big center console that controls almost everything in the Model 3 and Y was not mainly designed to provide a better user experience for its owners. It was developed as one of the major ways to cut the costs of the Model 3 and Y to make them more affordable than the S and the X. You can just imagine how many physical controls they saved by putting everything into that screen. If it was a better user experience, the newer Model S and X would have adopted it.
@andrerodriguez76034 жыл бұрын
Fix the door handles. I love the Model 3 door handles. They really need to know the functionality of the car before testing the vehicle. The blind spot warning system on my Model 3, must be the same for the Model Y. When changing lanes and a car is in your blind spot, the car gives you a very loud audible beeping to warn you. This actually happened to me when changing lanes on a city street. I didn’t see a Mazda Miyata in my blind spot. My car started beeping at me warning me. I corrected going into the lane a split second before the driver stared honking her horn. I feel this Tesla warning system works very well. Since the Model Y is based on the Model 3 and is built better than the Model 3, so in essence you are buying a second generation Model Y. Why wait for a second generation Model Y, when that is what you will be buying today. Also if you can get a Kona that is fine. But since they have a battery shortage on these EVs you will wait quite a long time to get one. I’ve wanted to see one on the street since they started selling them over a year ago. I live in Los Angeles and I have never seen one yet. These guys are clueless about what they are doing.
@donrobin88454 жыл бұрын
My wife drives a M3. I had some of the same critiques on the blind spot systems when I first was allowed to drive it. I typically start at the screen and then the mirror and then physically check over my shoulder. Like others here I think you become accustom to the systems over time. I also think you guys should consider the charging possibilities while road tripping. We love the supercharger network. While groups like Electrify America are doing better, I think it is a huge barrier to entry for other models if you plan on taking it out of town. We've completed several trips between Indianapolis and Atlanta and never had a charging location full. It certainly takes longer to charge than to pump gas, but that also continues to improve over time with more V3 Superchargers coming online. You also need to learn about how to charge using the superchargers. You rarely want to put a full charge on the battery at a supercharger. It takes too long as it slows down significantly as the battery 'fills up'. That means you really need to stop more frequently than you may want to do on a road trip, but we've found it a little better to make those extra pit stops. Just my 2 cents. We are thinking about replacing our Subaru Forester with a Model Y next year. Not ready to pull the trigger until it has been out for a year or so. Thanks for the review. Some good insights here.

So while you guys are correct that having to use the dash for adjusting the vents is a cool, but frustrating feature on the Model 3 and Model Y. I would have to completely disagree on the complaint about the steering wheel and mirror adjustment complaint. As a journalist you may be jumping in and out of cars and always having to adjust these things, but as a consumer I have not touched the steering wheel adjustment or mirrors in over a year in my car. Why have the excess buttons for something a consumer uses maybe 10 times in the years of owning their vehicle?
@directorjustin4 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of having the air vent positions linked to driver profiles because everyone likes their air vents in different positions. This can be due to multiple factors like height, driving position, or just personal preference (some people like air hitting their face, some people don't). With the vent positions linked to driver profiles, everyone who drives the car has the vents put in the exact position they like. It's one of many small things (like seat position and mirror position), that when put together make a big difference, especially for families who share one car.

Many of the comments made about so-called minor features have convinced me not to bother with this car until at least a year's improvement. For the elderly (I'm 79), minimalism is out. I need to find easy access to windshield wipers, a/c vents, etc. Having a computer display with multiply-layered screens for these simple functions is actually dangerous and time consuming. I have a Toyota Camry Hybrid and the problem I have with Toyotas is those bars on the sides of the windows. Visibility is checked. The solution of the Y is dangerous; to check your left side to see if a car is coming, you have to turn your head to the right to look at the screen. This is counter-intuitive and dangerous, to say the least. I will wait and see for another year. Guys: great analysis!

HVAC controls are at the bottom center of the main screen. Temperature, fan speed and seat heaters are easy to adjust. I am really happy with the controls compared to my Audi A3. MMI navigation cannot be safely set while in motion. I will master the voice controls on my Tesla soon. It has been great to leave the AC on in "Dog" mode while running errands. @@davidm5707 Then a Tesla is not for you. It is a smartphone with wheels that's why Tesla owners love them. Software controls the whole car which is why they can give you an update with new features every couple of weeks. It's also why you can get features that aren't quite baked which let's you experience them early. As they get feedback from their drivers they continually improve them, something no other auto company can do. The stop light feature is an example. Earlier this year they rolled out a preview which was visualization only, it didn't stop the car all it did was display the lights and signs. If it missed something or made a mistake you could tell them by pressing the speech recognition button and saying Bug Report and telling them what was wrong, that report along with camera footage is fed back to their machine learning systems which allowed them to further tune the system. The next step was unconditional stopping at lights, by always stopping they were making sure that no one got killed if the car got it wrong. After a month of that they moved to the next step which is going if it's following another car. After a few months of that they will be able to roll out the complete feature. The key is that they have nearly a million cars on the road which are providing them with real world data that is used to refine the system. Another example is voice commands, when I got my 3 a year ago it barely understood any commands, now almost every setting and function can be controlled by voice, just like your phone. Everything is opt in so you aren't forced to be a beta tester but most owners love getting the latest and greatest and they are happy to be part of the process of improving the system.

You can actually drive the car while looking at the touch screen. The screen shows you what's ahead of your, beside you and behind you and the lines on the road so that you can steer the car by staying between the lines. For a gamer, this approach is so similar to a video game that they are completely comfortable with it. Keep in mind that cars with the standard speedometer require that you look down (away from the road) between the steering column to see your speed or nav info or perhaps media settings. Similarly, in the Model 3/Y, you glance to the right to see if someone is in your blind spot before executing the lane change and if in AP the car will not change lanes if there is someone in your blind spot. When I hear the word RELIABILITY I think of a car that starts and runs everyday. That gets me from point A to point B reliably. That is a perfect description of my 2015 Tesla Model S 70D I do NOT think of fit and finish as something that effects reliability.

We have had our Model 3 for 7 months now. I have selected the mirrors, steering wheel, ventilation etc... 1 time and never ever touched it since! Why would I have a button for thing I am only doing once?

Agree 100% on lack of a instrument cluster. I would not buy a car without one. I also don't like the mandatory glass roof. I understand it gives a few extra inches of headroom, but a standard roof option would be nice.

My take on why Tesla put all controls in the screen, and not add other buttons elsewhere is to control everything with software, get analytics what settings people prefer, or in case of accident, they can figure out through the saved logs and configurations, You can’t do that with analog buttons.

"Training driver to look down"...yes, that's what Tesla is doing, and IMO..that's the right approach. Tesla now shows side view mirror on central screen. With its new AP re-write, its object detection will be greatly enhanced. So in future, you have to just look at center, not right and left.

Guys CR: I like and respect your analysis and opinion, but some of your negative comments are style, and you become annoyin insisting with fitures that not fit your preference...

It’s the “beta” just a legal term Tesla users to protect itself from potential lawsuits? Also is there a law or rule that says how long an automaker can use the term “beta “for its features it makes us pay for?

Do these guys own a model Y? The a/c vents are one of my absolute fav things. Couldn’t be any simpler to use. 🤷🏼♂️

Why are there no raise up-ed sedans? We have low hatchbacks (budget sub compact) (compact) and high hatchbacks (budget sub compact crossovers, sub compact suvs, compact suv, mid size suv, full size suv, and somehow wagons are in this mixed somewhere. They could even make a hatchback look like a sedan, but is a hatchback for those that don’t like hatches.

The updates and changes with software downloads are expected as the software continues to evolve. I’m curious if CR compares the number of miles driven by Tesla drivers and number of accidents per mile verses drivers of standard cars. That may provide more quantifiable proof whether these updates are safer or more dangerous rather than personal speculation. My previous cars, BMW, Lexus an Acura unfortunately did not change in 5 years of ownership. I chose Tesla because of changes (hopefully better with new features like sentry cam, traffic light monitoring improvements etc) over time.. btw updates are optional , you have to approve the update.

The driver is providing the training data to the neural network, by the driver pressing on the accelerator to go thru the green light. The network learns the conditions that are necessary to proceed safely thru the green light or yellow light. The magic is that "we" pay lots of money to provide Tesla NN training data; they in turn provide us with improvements thru updates. Brilliant! Imagine if Tesla had to generate this data themselves.

No we don't want to "re-clutter" the dash with buttons and gauges ... Teslas are mobility devices so let's keep 'em that way ... getting rid of all those buttons and manual gizmoes is how they kept the price down

I’m so tired of hearing people complain that there aren’t physical buttons for certain things. You are showing your age. The car is designed for the future to be autonomous. At some point there won’t be any speed reading because you’ll, well at least I will be watching a movie on Netflix while my car takes me to my destination. Regardless of FSD, motorizing the rear view mirror adds cost and it is an item that will not be needed when the car is doing the driving. And why do you need physical buttons to adjust your side mirrors or steering wheel? Once they are set... THEY ARE SET! The digital AC controls are brilliant. Being electronically controlled means they can be programmed and possibly in the future can follow the occupants in the front seats with the internal camera. What Tesla has done with this minimalist & simple design is future proof the design via over the air software updates not to mention cut costs especially keeping the interior the same between the 3 and Y. I don’t get why people don’t understand this stuff. 🤦🏼♂️

I hear what they are saying and it makes a lot of sense. I shouldnt' have to go into the menu to open the glove box. Mirrors and adjusting the steering wheel is reaching. But things you interact with a lot could use a button or slider. All those things are in the Model S. What they are missing is if tesla were to make these changes to the 3 and Y, then they would be so much more expensive. Tesla's tech, batteries, motors are ahead of everyone else. You can't offer all of these things while making the traditional interior and hitting range etc..... Look at the Mercedes SUV, it looks just like the gas version. 100%, but does it go further? is it faster? is it cheaper? You can't build these things, buy the truck load, while hitting prices, range, charging speed etc etc etc all while getting knobs, buttons, heavy quality wood and materials. It's like dude you got to give something up. You want 500 miles of range right now? then we can't put a grill and air vents lol. I'm rambling but I hope it makes sense.

And you shouldn't go through the menus. All we need to do is to say a voice command...
@michaellopez68304 жыл бұрын
@@MikeBrokenArrow True, but sometimes voice commands aren't always spot on. You also have to think of people who have speech impediments or who have thick unbelievable accents lol. A button would save their life lol. Having a customization Live tile'ish menu would be very useful during those moments. I think that would make lots of people even happier and transition even faster since it'll be like messing around with your phone. Or using your own voice you say the command and select the function, this way the car knows when you say Kinfield wipers you actually mean windshield wipers lol.

Are you saying that the electrically set air vent positions are NOT stored in the user profiles?!
