With the exception of the rear. They made the roof and trunk too short and the battery pack cuts into the trunk making cargo space too small and rear headroom too low. The Model 3 has more than double the cargo capacity (22.9 vs 11.2 cu ft). The melted rear looked bad on the Infiniti J30, and this is even worse. Hopefully the second generation won't look like a melted jellybean.

We are getting to the point where non homeowners are buying EVs so charging is even more of an issue than you might think.

So true. I am one of those people. I’ve had my Kia EV6 for about 8 months now and live in an apartment that does not have access to a charger so I’m having to always go out in the public and it’s been a challenge thus far since more and more EVs are out and using my local chargers.

My condo building is looking into letting owners add chargers to their parking places. If approved it’ll be a big retrofit project and it’ll cost up to $10K per space - the major cost is the copper cables that run from the panel across the garage to each space. They’re saying that adjacent spaces can go in together and save a lot by sharing a single cable.

I am a Tesla Model 3 owner. Really appreciate Hyundai. Like both the Ioniq 5 and the 6. What’s being left out on the conversation on styling, is range. The Ioniq 6 has a longer range than the the 5, because of it’s low aerodynamic drag. Which is as a result of the styling.

A company finally has the guts to put out a very sleek, aerodynamic design, and this guy says it looks like s suppository. WTF? If it looked like everything else on the market, he would probably complain that had boring styling. I think the Ioniq 6 is gorgeous.

The rear is so ugly. Whatever fraction of a mile more range they got wasn't worth the decimated rear passenger area and cargo capacity. 11.2 cu ft of cargo is unacceptable. The Model 3 has more than double the cargo capacity (22.9 cu ft).

The elephant in the room is the charging locations , women absolutely hate this. The back of Walmarts among others, unlit,or low light, you get the idea, I was this close to getting my wife a I6 and she said nope, not unless charging stations are similar to gas station setups.

Experience and older age can make a difference. Whenever I travel I carry an electric air pump that connects to the battery, I carry a breaker bar with a socket that fits my lug nuts, I have an air gauge, I check the air pressure on all the tires before a road trip including the spare, and I know enough to not change a tire on the side of a road that has traffic speeding by inches away. If I have to I’ll drive down the road or shoulder until I get to an off ramp and if I ruin a wheel so what, it’s better than being run into, which seems to happen often enough. If I had any passengers I would also have them get away from the vehicle and the road. There’s too many people (and vehicles) today to take a chance.

You asked about the boom mics. Personally I do not believe they improve things enough to be worth the distraction. Just IMHO. I have been there, and they are a distraction. Like the Ioniq 6, but would buy the 5 instead. “Would” because my cheap 2020 Bolt EV has been performing perfectly since 12/2020. Nothing to do but rotate the tyres and change the cabin filter.

A spare tire is essential, I think. I drive a Mustang which has a spare...made sure to order the car with one. My rims have been damaged 3 times necessitating them being taken off and repaired, sometimes having to wait a week. Try that with a runflat and no spare.

You guys are nuts on the spare. One flat and you are screwed waiting for outside help to come. AAA comes and you have no spare to put on the car so it is FLAT BED TIME to a tire store if open on a Sunday afternoon. Next it is UBER home. Two days later, the tire store orders you special 19 inch tire and your three day fiasco is over! Buy the temp spare and check the pressure. And the fix a flat kits usually go bad in about two years of use. And the dealer cost is crazy.

I like the front design, reminds me of the early 90s retro-futuristic... however the rear end is a bit polarizing. Sedans are a dying breed so they have to be great to sell. Other than the better visibility, people buy SUVs for the interior and cargo space. The rear of the Ioniq 6 is a fail. The Model 3 has more than double the cargo capacity (22.9 cu ft) and that overly sloped rear is to blame. Plus, it's ugly

I'm old enough to remember full size spares & changing them. I'm willing to risk just carrying a can of Fix-A-Flat or the wait for AAA over the work & risk changing a tire at the side of the road. If you do have a full size spare you can avoid it going bad or some other malody by including it in your regular tire rotation.

Watching from Denmark. A soon to be an I6 owner. A little comment regarding Tesla's supercharger network. I don't know how things are where you are, but here in Europe, Elon has opened the supercharger network to everyone. So you could charge your Hyundai/Kia EV on Tesla's supercharger network. Loving your talk about the I6. About the button placement. Personally it's a non-issue. Buttons in the centre console are quickly learned. And sure, the mirror adjustment placement is odd, but honestly, how often do you adjust your wing mirrors?

It's seems very odd to me that you wouldn't mention that none of the Hyundias or Kias are currently eligible for the Federal tax credit. Reducing the effective cost of ownership by $7,500 or even $3,750 is substantial and another reason beyond the Supercharger network why you might want to choose a Model 3 or Y.

Tesla dislike comes strong through CR episode. Not sure if it’s corporate stand or personal dislike that makes them criticize the brand at every chance. There was time when CR recommendation had some gravitas. Tesla seems to have broken them. I think Hyundai cars look very good even though I would probably stick with Tesla due to technology and ease of supercharging.

Having owned a few early EV models charging infrastructure is everything. I mean it’s a 50k car are you really willing to risk not being able to drive it anywhere? Tesla has no real competition when it comes to infrastructure. Tesla May not the best car from other perspectives but I can drive it anywhere and I never worry about charging.

On the topic of spare tires why do most manufacturers place the tire under the trunk floor and with the valve stem facing down? It’s certainly a disincentive to check the pressure when you have to remove the trunk tray and the jack then the tire just to add air to the spare. Engineering failure!

Flat tire pump-up kits do help you when fire falue involves the sidewll or close to kit! Also, I do not trust claims that current kits do not cause costly damage to the TPMS sensors! Even though I take care to see to it that the spare does not become past dated, I will still use my AAA membership to have the tire change done for me. On a weekend and late at night, the availability of a spare, even if it is just a nonut type, will keep me from being stranded!

This is a surprisingly good review. I think it took you guys a little while to understand what it’s really like to live with an electric vehicle and the advantages of reliability in a charge net work, but also the balance that a charge Netwerk provides versus charging at home. Tesla is a weird dichotomy of future verses now. Anyone in technology will tell you not to buy a product based on promises of future features. They may never come, or may have too much of anything buggy problem when they do. Teslas have the best charging networks by far right now making them a no-brainer choice for anyone who does have range anxiety for Enjoys going on road trips. However, they are also quite enticing for the person who believes that their car definitely will gain certain features over time. All other car makers are really good at deploying. Good features now that will probably not get better over time, but have a real Promise in their ability to charge on better networks someday.

Is there any benefit of one pedal driving over a good adaptive cruise or super cruise and auto braking system? My last few dailies have had those along with lane keep assist and my SO's has rear auto braking in addition to the others. Most days I do zero pedal driving between home and the destination, only using the brake to put the car in drive and park and the gas to get up to 20mph (32kph) to activate cruise. Why would anyone care about or prefer one pedal driving when those other systems are so reliable?

It reminds me of cars like the Tatra 603 and, together with cars like the Mercedes EQE sedan, seems to initiate a new age of streamlining. I'm not sure why people object to its rear end, when that rear end looks like a Porsche 911, surely one of the most beautiful cars ever. Ahoy folks. CR Car Talks are quite good. I drive an ID.4 and think of the off-accelerator behavior like this. In D mode it emulates an ICE torque converter auto-box, just keeps rolling. In B-mode, the coast down emulates a manual in an upper gear. Coast down is up to 1/8th G and is continuously modulated using the accelerator. Very much like the GTI DSG without the sound track.

Hyundai puts more R&D time than Tesla!? I highly disagree! From the motors, to the battery, battery cooling, safety features, software, app integration... Is there anything on the Model 3 that's not more fully baked than the competition? For crying out loud, Tesla has the Supercharger network! Tesla's R&D is so clearly ahead of other EVs and it shows in the sheer performance of all their vehicle's systems.
