I live in New Mexico and have visited the Very Large Array a couple of times, including during the 2012 eclipse (which was the perfect place to be). Each of the 27 dishes is as big as a pro baseball diamond. They move them around on train tracks. They act as one dish that's miles wide. During the 2012 eclipse the staff gave rare tours of the main building and control room, which is small. They made it about 5x bigger for the movie. There was a signed picture of Jodie Foster on the wall. The two local villages don't have microwave ovens to help keep the signal clean. The road that goes through the valley is the longest, straightest road I've been on. The place is about 3 hours from Albuquerque.

@@bigdream_dreambig It was more grounded, which I loved about it. Doing real science is boring 99.9+% of the time, which makes finding an actual alien signal that much more earth-shattering. zemeckis is known for using stock footage in his films, as he did in Forrest Gump. The Clinton speech is actually from the Mars discovery of possible microorganisms, I believe, inserted pretty seamlessly into the film. He also has some very interesting camera shots, like the continuous shot of young Ellie running towards a mirror. There's a whole commentary track that explains what went into that. There's also a 360 panning shot, which looks continuous but can't be because you'd see the cameras. The long tracking shot of her racing back to the VLA command center, and running into the control room, was several different locations all edited together so it looks unbroken. He's one of those directors that can actually use green screens and clever editing properly. I like Contact as a movie and a story, but it's also a go to for me in terms of cinematography and visual spectacle.

A great Sci Fi movie! Also, the opening scene with the shot of The Earth, as we zoom out of the solar system, was the original opening of the unmade adaptation of Alejandro Jodorowsky's DUNE, which back in 1976, would have been very expensive to film, as this would have involved matte paintings, miniatures, blue screen and front screen projection.

"Agnostic? Diagnostic?" :D That's pure comedy gold :D Carl Sagan was a self-described atheist, but I remember reading somewhere that while he included the question of "higher power" in the book, his description of what the "majority of world population" would take that to mean is a way broader than the concept of a deity of one type or another. Additionally stuff such as luck, forces of nature, science, etc. qualify ... and because of that the acceptance is so high. But because the committe had thair own agenda guiding them, they were not seeing it in such a way and simply misinterpreted it in a way that made sense to them.

My only complaint about this movie is that it left out the best part from the book. When Ellie asks Dad-Alien if they have any concept of spirituality, or anything that can't be explained by science, he asks a hypothetical question: Alien: "If you calculated the number pi out to a billion digits, and found it stopped being random and instead encoded a message ... what would that tell you?" Ellie: "That's impossible. That's baked into the very nature of reality. To encode a message like that, you'd have to..." Or, as XKCD put it: "Pi = 3.14159helpi'mtrappedinauniversefactory..."

Except the representation we usually have of Pi is base 10. What if it was expressed in a different base? But whatever.
@IgnisKhan
@IgnisKhan 8 ай бұрын
@@kilroy987 In the book, the message appeared in base 11! Not a base most sentient creatures would choose organically, because it's a prime number. Those appear a lot in all the messages in the book. Besides, I'm pretty sure a message in the wrong base would still trigger statistical methods looking for non-random data.
@paratus04
@paratus04 8 ай бұрын
I too was blown away by that thought when I first read the book until i realized something about irrational transcendental numbers like pi. Since pi theoretically never terminates and never ends in a repeating string of numbers - any non infinite string of numbers should be contained in pi somewhere. So the string of numbers making a circle in base 11 like in the book is actually in there somewhere. Your name encoded in ASCII is in there. The string of numbers that would make up this KZbin video in H.264 mapped to base 10 is in there. There are a few websites that let you search strings of numbers in the first few 100million-billion places in pi so you can basically find any 6-7 alpha numeric string in ascii in pi. Example: the word YOU in ascii is 897985 and found at position 440267 while TUBE is 84856669 in ascii and found at position 58131944 Something kind of wild to think about.
@IgnisKhan
@IgnisKhan 8 ай бұрын
@@paratus04 Haha, I had to look up that thing about base 11 to reply to kilroy, so I JUST NOW saw someone talking about the same thing as you. Apparently Carl Sagan said or wrote something to the effect that the message is pi was statistically extremely early -- you'd expect it to take much longer to randomly appear. But yeah, infinity gets weird for combinatorial problems. If you divide planet Earth up into voxels one Planck length wide, that's a discrete pattern you can search for elsewhere. It's possible to do the math to figure out how far on average you'd have to travel into the infinite universe to find a "parallel" (or at least, identical at the quantum level) world.

We all have the same questions... the same questions that folks have had since the first time someone wondered about the stars.... Of course back then, they thought the stars could fall to earth (LOL)! Carl Sagan was a wonderful science communicator. He was one of the first people to really put the world, and even our galaxy, into perspective. For many years, people were trying to mimic the way he said "billions and billions" referring to how many stars there might be in the universe. So much so that he even titled one of his books "Billions and Billions." This movie's main character was based on a scientist with whom he worked briefly, and whose work he respected, Dr. Jill Tarter.

Good reaction, Whimsory. I see in your post-reaction comments that you do indeed mention Astrophysicist Carl Sagan (the author). But just for added context ---- Carl Sagan was VERY famous back in the day....as a scientist with celebrity status, he was extremely well-known worldwide. He authored numerous books, and had many documentaries on TV etc. He was that scientist that movie-makers would approach for scientific advice when making their 'realistic' sci-fi movies.

I love being in a place where I can see great distances. If I climb the hill behind my house, I can see the mountain range that's about 80 miles away. It's breathtaking.

I’m a raised Catholic but now am more the scientific type. My mom is very Catholic. I saw this movie with my mom when it came out. I love how you made the point of how this movie doesn’t lean too far towards any beliefs.

Your reaction/reviews are the best! And you are funny and adorable! Tom Skeritt and John Hurt (Hadden) were both in Alien. Hurt played Kane -- the first victim of the alien with the face-hugger and exploding chest.

Good work Whimsory. I like how you analyse that movie. It belong among my most favourite movies. There were a lot of good actors, but this was first time, that I realize, that in this movie met again Tom Skerrit and John Hurt (both from my all time top movie Alien). Thank you for this review.

The scene on the beach is from the painting in the beginning of the movie. That’s the scene I first saw from this movie and figured out it was her dad and immediately broke down in tears.

Ive been enjoying your channel from Aotearoa New Zealand for several movies now. I read the book first in my late teens and loved the actual ending. I was mid twenties when the movie came out. I really identified with that searching young woman and riding along in a sci-fi story with a protagonist that finally matched my demographic. It's well worth exploring the book but both have a special place in my heart, which was once idealistic and curious about the world, like you. Keep stretching that comfort bubble, you're awesome.

-I think she ran from Palmer because she's afraid to get close to anyone for fear of losing them. -That thing where you hate big open flat spaces, I have that too, I call it the Primitive Mammalian Instinct because I feel like something is gonna swoop down and eat me. I need mountains and trees around me to feel safe. -"Funny, I always believed the world is what we make of it." Boom, roasted. She basically said, "If you think the world sucks, it's because YOU suck." -In addition to the 18 hours of static, how would they account for the securely bolted chair breaking off its mount if the pod just fell straight down and was gently caught by that fancy net? -Actually Bill Clinton was talking about space, I remember the speech, it was about some sample from Mars that may have indicated microbial life. They weren't able to verify it though.

The "love triangle" you missed is actually between ellie, palmer, and ellie's job (as in her obsession with science, her scientific drive, her unquenchable thirst for knowledge beyond our bounderies... she's stuck on earth like a castaway but her heart walks beyond the stars).

In the movie Star Trek: First Contact, there's a view of the earth from the ship in orbit through a window with a forcefield so there isn't even glass, just a dramatic view of earth. I'm sure that would freak you out even more.

“They Should Have Sent a Poet” -- amazing line! The percentage of people who believe in God was much higher in 1997. I don’t know whether 95% is the right number, but higher than now. @Whimsory you have the best Outro/Discussions anywhere. Keep up the great work. I sometimes wonder if you should watch a movie, and then film yourself during the second watch. I know that would be a different vibe but it might be a fun twist.

I don’t necessarily believe it to be true that less people believe in god today than 20/30 years ago. Social media has made it easy to attack/belittle/cancel people you disagree with coupled with some tin foil hat stuff…

You say the world is so big, but I‘ve found that the more you travel the smaller the world becomes and more content you are. Those who travel a lot are those who at the end of their lives have no regrets….So get out there while you can and have as many adventures you can…from a long time traveler with no regrets, it‘s worth it and I‘m still traveling…….Cheers

If all that empty space is an issue for you, try this: when you look _up_ at the sky, instead of thinking you're looking up, visualize that you're looking down, like into a well. After all, there is no up or down in space. Didn't help me either.

Fkn yes ! One of my favourites ! Original story by Carl Sagan. The shot where she runs up the stairs, to the bathroom mirror was insanely well done. 0:34 You're welcome ! Sadly the Arecibo observatory, where Ellie first studies, collapsed around 3 yrs ago, not sure if it's been reconstructed or ever will be 11:49 John Hurt, also from Alien 😆, he patched up his chest. 13:46 Probably because it's Gary Busey's son 16:28 There's not a hope (in hell b'dum tsh) that 95% of humans believe in a deity. 28:56 YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH ! I live and grew up in New Mexico. When I was a kid we were driving back from a camping trip when I first saw the the VLA. I was sleepy but said, "What in the heck is that?" Later the year before medical school I lived at the Alamo Navajo Reservation, very close to the VLA, and visited there one day. I laughed when I read all the signs warning peeps about the rattlesnakes in the area.

When the book and movie were written and then produced we knew approximately how many stars were in our galaxy but planets beyond those in our own solar system had not yet been discovered. They knew there are about 200 Billion Stars in our galaxy. We now know very nearly all of those Stars have multiple planets. Finding planets the size of Earth is still difficult but a fair number have been found. It seems only a matter of time until we find a planet with life.
