He learned to be a better man. That's what ended the loop. Didn't you notice that the first thing he did in the loop was countless days of hedonism? Then after that, he settled into depression, and tried to kill himself. Then he shifted to learning new skills, and finally into being selfless. He ended his last day of his loop by admitting that he took joy in all the good he did. "Even if tomorrow never comes, i'm happy now." It's a story of being a better person.

Filmed in my hometown of Woodstock, Illinois; lived a couple houses down from the B&B he stays in (every time he looks out the window that's my folks' house the second on the right). I was around ten years old and having two Ghostbusters come to town and make a movie that I could watch the filming of from my backyard blew my mind. So many great associations tied to this movie for me and I love getting to vicariously watch it again for the first time through someone else's eyes; loved your reaction!

There are lots of theories on how long he was trapped. Harold Ramis (the director) said it was 10 years. Some people have worked out, because of everything he learned to do, that it was over 30 years. I read somewhere that the script had it set at 10,000 years. Needless to say, it was a very long time. As for what caused the loop to break, it was probably because he finally became a good person.

Actually Harold Ramis said it was 10,000 years. He was a Buddist and they believe it takes 10,000 years to perfect the human soul, which is what this move was about.

For another time loop film, The Edge of Tomorrow is a good watch And yeah Phil had to be in there for 100s or 1000s of years. One of my favourite bits is when Phil says "what would you do if every day was the same and nothing that you did mattered" and that drunk local says "well that pretty much sums it up for me" Like that's so bleak. And when the homeless guy keeps dying, it always gets me emotional

Groundhog Day, what a movie! A real event in the real world. A weather-forecasting-animal-event, brought to america by the Pennsylvania dutch/deutsch (Germans speaking deutsch not dutch like the Netherlanders). In the original it was called "badger Day" (Dachstag). But there were no badgers in Pennsylvania back in the days, so the groundhog got the job.

As a guitarist, you have to build the calluses and keeping playing so you don’t lose the calluses. It’s kinda a metaphor for life, if you think about it. Things worth having usually aren’t “easy”, achieving difficult things usually are, because they allow us to grow, and you need some emotional calluses to continue to grow and try and fail and to keep trying until you succeed.

I mean, even without a blizzard, *TRAVEL* would specifically be the one thing you couldn't do, if you were in his situation. Even assuming there's a flight today to... anywhere... and that you're close enough to the airport to get it... you'd basically spend the day traveling, you'd be tired when you get there, you wouldn't see much (if anything at all), and then you'd start over. 😅

I feel like a lot of us are stuck in a metaphorical loop, especially as you get older and settle into a routine, doing the same thing day in and day out with less and less variation. The movie is telling us that no matter your situation you can get out of your rut and learn to become a better person, and break your bad habits. At least that's what I take from it. I know I'm quite guilty of getting stuck and not feeling like anything different is possible.

2:07 *Blood sausage* (or black pudding in the UK, it's a traditional part of English breakfeast, a left over from the Vikings invading the poor Brits) is a sausage filled with animal's blood (yep!) that is cooked or dried and then mixed with a filler, e.g. a cereal, until it is thick enough to solidify when cooled. The blood may come from pigs, sheep, lamb, cow, chicken or goose. Around my way in Denmark the pig version is a traditional Christmas dish, where you roast thick slices of it in butter and sugar.

In 2005 I work on the tv show Prison Break in Chicago for a security company. We had to go to a location in Woodstock Illinois. We get to a location in Woodstock Illinois. I knew Groundhog Day was filmed in Woodstock. When I got to the location I was in the Groundhog Day location. I noticed the area. I said it’s Groundhog Day lol met so many actors for the show Prison Break. All actors were very nice to hang and talk to

Yes, Whimsory, *_every_* sane person tests the temperature of a shower before getting in! If your water heater is older, then you might just freeze yourself if the dishwasher/washing machine/other residents have used most of the hot water. And if your water heater is fairly new, like ours, then you could actually scald yourself, which is much, much worse! 🤕

This was filmed in Woodstock IL, just one town to the north of where I grew up. A friend of mine was an extra and was in front of the camera all the time....only to have all of the scenes get cut lol.

Bill Murray's a pro at playing jerks who have a change of heart. If you want to see another movie where Bill plays a similar character, watch _Scrooged._ It's one of the better and more unique versions of _A Christmas Carol_ out there.

Great reaction! Love the vibe to your videos. He doesn't speak a few sentences of French. That's the first real glimpse of how long he's been there. How long would it take you to become fluent in french? As you go through the movie, you see him lean French, piano, ice sculpting... all kinds of things. There's one point where they are sitting on the bed, throwing cards in a hat. She says she'll never be able to do it, and he replies "six months, tops". He knows because that's how long he's been there learning it.

My sister's family (and now as I live with-ish them, me, by proxy) celebrates Groudhog Day every year by a 24 hour repetition of the movie, its always on, and indulging in an orgiastic glut of diner-like foods: donuts, biscuits and gravy, chips, sweets, pies, cakes, burgers... a feast, like all good holidays. I recommend everyone adopt this and lets take it international.

I've heard of a deleted scene where an ex-girlfriend curses him, but honestly the movie is better leaving the situation ambiguous. I've also heard that they filmed this movie in a clever way -- of course, when there were many versions of the same scene, they shot those back-to-back, but in *reverse* chronological order, so Bill Murray would be fresh for the later versions and be getting tired and grumpy for the earlier versions. (I'd love to hear you play piano, btw.)

Great choice, this is THE timeloop movie. Although there are earlier examples of this fascinating genre, it is probably the best known and most often referenced one. Other recommended entries encompass "Edge of Tomorrow", "Happy Death Day" or "Palm Springs" (movies), the X-Files episode "Monday", or the novels "Perfect Run" and "Mother of Learning".

The tv version of Stargate had a fairly comic episode based on the same premise, only the cause was scientific. They just had to figure it out in time, and didn't, for a long time. In their version, two people were involved: O'Neill & Teal'c. What happened when they realized there were no consequences was hysterical. It had a much lighter tone than this movie.

Saw this one in the theater back in '93 with a friend of mine. General consensus is that Phil spent decades reliving that day, based on the number of skills he had time to master. As for why he didn't leave town, the blizzard, along with having his day reset every time he went to bed, undoubtedly limited his options... which isn't to say he never tried leaving, but we only see small snippets of the many, many years he spent in the time loop. Speaking of time loops, this wasn't the first time one was depicted in a movie, but it did a lot to popularize the idea in the west.

Phil at this point is thousands or hundreds of years old. He is like a vampire. And at the end of the movie getting out of that loop will be like another SHOCK. Another curse. You've already gotten used to knowing what's going on, you've memorized everyone's routine and you know everyone. You have interacted with them. You know them. And before, what you wanted most was to get out of the loop. But once you do, it must be terrifying. It's a WHIPLASH. Now suddenly you don't know what's going to happen. And you can't leave things for tomorrow anymore. Not be a perfectionist. There is no reset or redo button. Going from thinking you're immortal, eternal to......I'm going to die, I am vulnerable again.

I have developed a theory about this movie having watched reactions to it over and over and over. I believe the time loop begins when Rita says to Phil at the beginning of the movie after he gives his first Groundhog's Day speech that he should do it again without the sarcasm. But when he disses her and grumpily says "We got it!" someone was apparently listening (her guardian angel perhaps or maybe his) and decided to curse him to relive the day until he actually did as she asked. And that is exactly what seems to have happened as we do not see him finally giving a good speech until the very last day.

To be honest, I would probably do a few things for myself first. I am currently playing catch up, on all the things that I was supposed to learn as a teenager, due to years of foster care. I would also definitely throw myself out there and try to remedy my extreme anxiety, depression and shyness. I would learn the piano, violin and guitar. I would take vocal lessons, as well.

@@gallendugall8913 Yeah, I find that to be too long but the directors idea of about 30 years makes a bit more sense. Honestly IDK what he would do for 3,652,500 days if it was 10,000 years. 33 years seems way too long as well considering all he had to do to escape is be selfless. I feel like most people would start doing good things instead of bad things within a couple months or less.

I heard there was an early deleted scene where he goes to a library and decides to read a page a day, by the end of the movie he was supposed to have read every book in the library multiple times.

I really enjoy this movie, but I still find the ending weird from a relationship perspective. I get that Phil has vastly improved himself and shown his improved self to Rita, and her opinion of him has changed, but in this last reality there's no indication that he's told her about what's happened yet, and from her perspective things would be moving blindingly fast. After maybe 18 hours tops (where she's only really interacted with him twice before going back with him to the inn) she decided to give up all the money she has on her, close to $400, on this guy she still barely knows. That's a bit weird but somewhat acceptable. The really weird thing is what happens the following morning after the loop is over. Literally the last line is the bombshell of "Let's live here. We'll rent to start." This is a guy she's known for what, a few weeks maybe, since she was new at the station, and she's only really gotten to know him at all in the past couple of days, and she seems totally fine with the idea of moving with a near stranger to a new town. That is WILD and the movie takes it completely at face value and makes us think it's completely reasonable, but only by romcon logic does it make any sense at all. If they'd left literally just that line out I think the ending would have been way better because every time I see that scene it takes me out of it and makes me think she's crazy for just reacting so nonchalantly after he says it, and makes me wonder what their next conversation is going to be like. Like I get it, Rita, you dream of settling down and having a family, but talk about jumping in headfirst into a relationship.

There's a deleted scene (I don't know if it was actually filmed or just in the script) that shows he got into the time loop because a girlfriend he'd just broken up with put a gypsy curse on him as revenge, and that the curse would only be broken when he learned to really love someone other than himself. The scene was cut when they realized, correctly, that the audience just didn't need to know.

I loved that it wasn't just enough to 'do' the right things...it was to truly BE a decent person, inside and out. When something broken in him was finally fixed...and he was full of joy...he was finally free. Gets me right in the feels every time

Was I the only one who was disappointed when Whimsory said she wasn't going to re-watch the movie before doing her outro? To this most thought provoking movie ever? 😊 It's a comedy yes but only 10% comedy, 25% lightheartedness, 25% romantic and 40% thought provoking about one's own situation in daily life and our potential for growth and enrichment and ultimately what is purpose and meaning? Always wanting for more Whimsory time 🙂

It's funny that "groundhog day" has become so synonymous with deja vu, even in other countries who have never heard of this very minor local holiday. All because of this movie.

Hello Whimsory: You said if you were stuck in this time loop with Phil Conners you would TRAVEL. But remember at the start of this loop there was a BILZZARD that closed all the roads... So NO TRAVEL for anyone. I had thought of buying the DVD for 'Groundhog Day' (1993) and adding a professional sticker that read "PART TWO". The recipient of the DVD would likely be delighted to be given a sequel to a great movie. Hopefully they would eventually see the humor of watching the original 1993 version of 'Groundhog Day' waiting to see something NEW. In effect creating their own déjà-vu loop. Consider telling your editor that you do not need to have your eyes appear larger... you already look cute enough. 😍

in the end he learned not to be a selfless, egotistical jerk. At first he was doing it to satisfy himself, by the end he was doing things for others. He genuinely cared for everyone around him and that's what finally broke the loop.
