I love that this murder was purely committed to protect her granddaughter. It wasn't for politics, it was a genuine display of deep familial love from a grandmother protecting her granddaughter. And I love that coming from someone who is otherwise so flippant and sarcastic. She is a fucking fantastic character.

Well, I agree for the most part. She didn't want Margery to be at risk with a sadist bastard like Joffrey, but it was also political. Margery wouldn't have been able to control Joffrey, he was to unpredictable and unhinged and he did not like to be told what to do, the power of King went to his head and he enjoyed exercising that power over people. However, Tommen is softer, kind hearted and gentle and much more naïve to the ways of the world. Olena knew that if Marge married Tommen, it would be house Tyrell that ruled the seven kingdoms.

@@NarnianHogwart Couldn't have said it better myself. Olenna is not evil by any means, but she is cunning. I think I would classify her as Neutral Good, but I'm curious to know where others think she fits. She's acting with good intentions, even her ambition is well meant, she knows her family would make better rulers than the Lannisters. But she's clearly not above bending, or straight up breaking, a few rules to reach her goals.
@hux2000
@hux2000 2 жыл бұрын
It was absolutely done for political reasons though. Killing Joffrey shifted the balance of power substantially in favor of house Tyrell: it removed a violent king controlled by Cersei and replaced him with a pliant one who could be controlled by the Tyrells. And at the same time, it took the smartest Lannister - Tyrion - completely out of the picture. If all had gone well, house Tyrell would've become the dominant power in Westeros. (Cersei, of course, had other plans...) I'm sure Olenna isn't simply lying about wanting to protect her granddaughter. But at the same time, she's not telling her the whole truth here, because she knows Margaery has somewhat of a moral conscience and might not be fully invested in the plan if she knew it's cold, hard, political goals. And if it had been a scenario where the end result of the killing wouldn't have protected her, Olenna would 100% have done it anyway.

Olenna telling Margaery the details of how she stole her sister's would-be husband and Margaery giggling along to it is kind of weirdly wholesome, despite how it's literally a master manipulator teaching a less experienced manipulator how to be a better manipulator.

Olena is teaching Margaery. Parents cannot protect their children, only prepare them. Ned's idea to take his daughters to King's Landing was a terrible idea. They were completely ignorant, and were easily manipulated (mostly Sansa, Aria wouldn't have gotten away with her behavior for much longer).

Olenna really balanced her pragmatism with her love for her family, particularly grandchildren. Tywin also acts in the name of family but it is more about the family name and his reputation than anything, with Olenna there's genuine love in the mix. @@SakariWolf13 Um, yes I’m aware that she pulled off a Pearl using the excuse of straightening the necklace. The moment was a direct callback to Sansa at the wedding. Because some people might watch the show and wonder “wait, how was he poisoned?when did someone slip the poison in?” So instead of having Olenna explain how she did it with words, they showed the audience by making a matching scene. But I haven’t seen anything that says the pear was a backup? I’m pretty sure she didn’t remove the Pearl to cover her tracks in case someone examined the necklace. Oh.. Now I get why this episode was so amazing. Bryan Cogman wrote it. Couldn't they let him write more episodes? He seems to understand the core of the books and the characters' interactions seem more rich when he is in charge. Also, the one-liners are way more subtle and realistic. It was refreshing to finally see Daenerys's dark side, something that D&D's biased interpretation would not have shown.

I loved the planning of the episode as well. Especially the two scenes with Littlefinger&Sansa and Olenna&Margaery... the transaction and the small hint at the end when Olenna touched Margaery's necklace... perfect. Oh and the mention of the gardens by Olenna. I thought it was a very distinctive symbolism of their house, I barely remember any other characters to use them, yet here she says she hates them =P

Tell that to the thousands of book fanboys raging because they altered Bran storyline and showed stuff from the white walkers lore that even they didn't know. As far as those is concerned, the show is ruined.

J Jo I'm a fangirl of the books as well. But even more than that I'm a fangirl of that world. Yeah, at times it feels like alternate universes, but I don't see that as a bad thing. To my mind that makes it even more interesting and as long as it's plausible and doesn't contradict important features of the story I'm all right. For me this was the most interesting episode in a very long time, and a big part of why is the parts that weren't in the books. To my mind the show and books simply complement each other and they both work together in creating this world.

Just an interesting side note but Olenna's betrothed was actually Prince Daeron Targaryen. When his siblings and future King and Queen decided to marry each other for love despite their parents' defiance, and his eldest brother marrying a commoner and giving up the iron throne, he also chose to break his betrothal with Olenna. Prince Daeron was gay and he died fighting alongside his lover.

Technically Olenna isn’t framing Tyrion, she’s letting him take the fall but she didn’t intend to frame him. Joffrey was embarrassing Tyrion by making him his cup bearer, that wasn’t Olenna’s doing. It’s just unfortunate circumstances Tyrion ended up with the murder weapon. Also she isn’t really going after Sansa either, since Petyr helped strategize the plot to get Sansa out. Sansa was gonna look suspicious anyway, but I don’t think Olenna wanted either Tyrion or Sansa to be punished

Anyone else get the feeling that Olenna told Marjory this as a way of training her? The whole conversation prior to this was about how Marjory has become successful at manipulating men in order to gain their power. It's kind of sinister. She was like a natural psychologist with Joffrey, only she fed his ego and sadism. Olenna seems to be trying to make Marjory willing to kill. She believes Marjory is the smartest Tyrell alive (in the show) and soon she won't be around to carry the family. She needs someone as ruthless as she is to carry on after her. And she begins it by showing Marjory a classic case of killing to 'protect the family'. Marjory on some level is likely grateful to Olenna. Sansa and even Cersei pointed out that Joffrey would have tortured her. Therefore murder for the sake of protecting family instantly seems appealing to Marjory given how much she owes to that very thing.

It's interesting that she's wearing her hair like Cersei now. Olenna's words of "You just do what needs to be done." are similar to when Tywin told Cersei to get married to Loras. Margery is probably going to start feeling like she isn't really in control of as much as she wants to be and it's Olenna and the rest of the Tyrells are calling the shots, even if their interests align. Just like how Cersei feels like she is losing control of just about everything and is just doing whatever Tywin says.
