I agree completely. It’s a great album, but people can’t appreciate the diversity and the futuristic/ ahead of the game production elements of a lot of the tracks. Yeah I Know, ITTSYSK, and What Should I Say are way ahead of typical pop/ alternative tracks

It does take a while to get used to it which is why the initial response was so critical or rather lukewarm since it was so hyped. But now I’ve grown to love it, it’s different but it’s where they were gonna go after ABIIOR so it’s not too drastic of a change in style.

Whether they intended it or not, what made this album so brilliant was the very thing it got bashed the most for: disjointedness, lack of focus, etc. How does the general public consume music the most these days? Through the bottomless digital landfill of playlists via major streaming platforms. A lot of us live through eclectic playlists now primarily due to mass exposure to varying genres in one place (Spotify, Pandora, etc.) and that’s what made the structure of this album a statement of the times itself. NOACF is structured more like a playlist than an album, both in structure and in length, and once that clicked for me I appreciated this album so much more. Orrrr possibly none of that was intended at all and it was just a crazy spontaneous mashup of sporadic ideas with a punk attitude of not giving af lol I’m not a 1975 apologist/superfan, I just like what they’ve been doing these past few years and happen to love 80’s sophistipop/new wave.

This album really is just simply a giant flex from The 1975, it’s not for everyone and that’s the whole point. They have gone past that, their music is now partially directed to the fans and partially to anyone new listening. I’m pretty sure they can make any song they want to in any genre they choose and make it sound catchy and good.
