This is really intimidating to someone like me, who is doing just about all I can do to put batteries in a hand-held (might be why I use them...). Impressive stuff...

Thanks, but it’s really not that complicated. You just need to know a few tricks.

Very impressive work. It definitely looks like this is not your first rodeo. I think you made the right choice in going to 2 gauge on your battery cables.

Great video, I just discovered your channel and subscribed right away! Quick question on putting the batteries in the bilge, I’m by no means an expert, but it seems a bit dangerous to put batteries in the first place that will fill up with water if you have issues (knocking out your electronics). Have you seen this done by others? I always thought a bilge was for bilge pumps and drinks.

Hi Kevin, Yes you are correct about the battery submersion danger, but the aft part of the bilge is quite deep and it would take multiple waves to get the water above the batteries. However as I said in the video, the plan is to switch to AGM batteries, which are sealed and will work when submerged. Also, I do plan on relocating the batteries to just beneath the starboard quarterberth at some point before the big trip, in order to make more room in the bilge for another water tank. That would raise them about 18 or so inches.

How did you secure the teak boards to the bulkhead in order for the weight of the Nav Station to be held securely in place?

With screws that go right through the fiberglass from the other side.

@@EpoxyAndButylTape I'm in Windsor Ontario, just across the river from Detroit. I have a 1974 Contessa 26 - JJ Taylor build from Toro to. You do nice work. Your video was very timely because I'm in the process of building a similar bulkhead to house my radio and new navigation instruments.

did you have any issue with heat build up behind the panel?

I installed a computer fan just in case, but didn’t notice any real heat at the height of summer.

Yeah the audio on these early videos had issues. The KZbin up-loader was supposed to normalize the audio, but it didn't happen on some. I always make sure to normalize before uploading now.
