CONTEXTUALIZATION for DBQ and LEQ (how to earn the point)

When you're writing a DBQ or LEQ, the biggest mistake you're likely to make on your contextualization paragraph is to use irrelevant events to set up your argument. SO many students fall into the trap of thinking that contextualization is complete when they've mentioned a few events that happened BEFORE their argument (thesis). But the special sauce for earning the point is this: your contextualization has to be RELEVANT to your thesis.

I have taught AP world for 4 years now and I don’t know how to simplify comtextualization. Some kids get it right away, some over time get it, some never get it. The thing that kills me is that it’s not a super hard concept to understand.

Thank you so much for this. My teacher gave us an leq and said they were all so bad that he had to stop and couldn't continue grading. So now he plans to give us another one and I have to reevaluate my entire knowledge of an leq because I don't want to do another one that's bad.

Man you were a godsend for me in APWH last year in virtual. I’m fairly certain the reason my APWH teacher recommended us to you was so she didn’t have to do much teaching herself (and it worked pretty well). Watching your DBQ video the night before the AP exam probably got me that 5 (and it was the first AP exam I’d ever taken), especially when our class ended in the fall and our teacher only went over LEQs in that time. For your AP Gov content if you could add some of the chapters from different textbooks (like pearson’s) that the units correspond to that’d be great. For some reason, unit 2 corresponds with ch 11 and 12 in Pearson's book 😂 BTW what happened to retrospect? I really enjoyed the idea behind it and the videos you did make, it was great to see where we are from a historical lens. If you could make videos again for that channel that'd be amazing too. I'd be interested to see your take on the whole CRT thing, especially since you teach history. If you do get this far then take care and thanks for carrying thousands of AP social studies students.

Whoa, congrats on the 5! As for the AP Gov videos, yeah that's probably a good idea. I might not get to it for a while because I've got lots of stuff cooking over here, but if you Google "[name of your textbook] correlation guide" you should find a document that will tell you what unit/topic corresponds to your chapters. Then just find my video labeled with that unit and topic (e.g., 3.6 or 5.4). As for Retrospect, I really appreciate your encouragement. I loved making those videos, but they were just taking way too long and there were only so many hours in the day. I may take it up again some time, but for now, I've got to focus on this channel.

@@heimlershistory The man himself responded, I don't think I can ever receive a higher honor than this. The correlation guide for our book that I did find seems to be outdated, maybe because the book is from 2014 and it looks like the AP Gov course structure has just changed since then. Your topic videos and reviews are still incredibly helpful, especially when we have unit tests. And as for Retrospect, it's a bummer but I do understand it. KZbin videos with your level of editing and polishing take time and effort, and it's a lot on top of teaching a regular class (or at least that's what I assume you still do, heh). If you do ever get back to doing Retrospect though, know that you have at least one viewer right here waiting.
