Continuing the 5000km Road Trip testing out the new Ineos Grenadier

We continue on our 5000km outback Australian trip in the brand new Ineos Grenadier. In this episode we finally get off the seal roads and on to the four wheel driving tracks. The roads are badly corrugated and we find ourselves in some dark places where I wonder that we may never get out. Along the way I discover I can't get fuel into the car!

The high flow diesel limitation is a bit annoying but the vow diesel adaptor does a reasonable job. It fits in the narrow opening and receives high flow nozzle

Thanks for that, Yes a bit annoying and carrying an adaptor means keeping it clean from dust and away from contaminating anything with diesel....still not something that we can't manage. John

@@cannyoutdoors the VW one comes in a pretty well sealed container. Alternatively can make a container with pvc pipe and screw on ends

Lots of cars have auto-sealing fuel caps that only accept small nozzles these days. My Ranger’s are not fitted with these and can easily be filled using the big commercial nozzles. However, every vehicle that I’ve owned with small nozzle only filling do supply a little plastic adapter tundish for filling from large nozzles or ordinary oil cans with larger plastic nozzles [as inevitably used by farmers and plant operators].

Yes my Ranger also accepted the larger nozzle. Unfortunately no adapter came with the Grenadier however I will find one to keep for emergencies. Thanks for the suggestion, John

@@cannyoutdoors The Grenadier also has the significant disadvantage of the can filling it having to be lifted to shoulder height rather than waist height, so using a tundish or even a nozzle on a jerrycan at that height is going to be a strenuous affair to say the least. Did the designers of this vehicle not have feedback from practical experienced users of rural use vehicles at all?

Interesting. Compared with my 2009 Defender 110, the Grenadier uses more fuel, has less ground clearance, a lower payload and costs more new. But the Grenadier is modern and seems well-built.

Good to see you enjoying your trip , corrugations are murder and are far worse to drive on than rough tracks , about 40 yeaes ago We drove to cape york tip in a series 2A SWB and could not use ths developmental road unless we idled along in 3rd gear and still had trouble with the carby flooding due to the float bouncing up and down so we took the old telegraph line track which was rough but the old Landy just ate the kilometers . A bit disapointing about the fuel filler but I have heard that there is an adaptor either available or soon to be available , you would think with all of the testing done in Oz that somebody would have picked up on that and tried to find a solution . I suspect that the reason for the narrow filler is that in the UK and probably Europe is that diesel for trucks is taxed less than car fuel and it is a requirement that hiflo nozzels cac not be used for cars

I am a little surprised more effort was not put into Australianising the Grenadier (towing etc.) as we are expected to be one of the major markets. However this is a minor grumble only. John - you can get a hi-flow adapter. Bit messy at times, but will get you out of trouble.

Yes and it is quite a pain in rump as I have travelled around. I have a cut down funnel for emergencies but have managed (with some inconvenience) to avoid using it as yet. But in the overall scheme of things it a minor issue on a great vehicle Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment, John

Informative content thanks John. Hopefully there will be some aftermarket longer range fuel tank options soon . 19l/100k makes Jerry cans a necessity for even relatively short trips in many outback areas.

Exactly Jeremy, I am kind of used to carrying them as I did also in my Ranger (90l tank). I am not holding out much hope for a LR tank, there doesn't seem to be much room, but who knows there are some pretty innovative people out there. Thanks for your comment John

Having experienced many miles in a Land Cruiser 100 quite heavily loaded, no matter what the corrugations, if travelling any distance I would not have less than 35psi in the tyres as an absolute minimum. Having been running at 32psi many years ago, I found that the joint between the sidewall and tread would heat up to the point that eventually the rubber would degrade in that specific area due to constant excessive flexing, causing multiple punctures and basically trashing the tyres.

i live in Arizona. very hot here.i lower my rears to 25psi and fronts to 20 when towing my black series dominator. works great. been doing it for years. never lost a tire. the trailer gets aired down to 25psi as well.

@@cardp17 I’m just about ready this morning to hitch two 14ft trailers to two Ford Rangers I own, which will be loaded up to 3.5 tons gross, the triple axle enclosed trailer with 2.3 tons of cargo and the other twin axle drop sides with 2.6 tons. The ball weight will be around 350kg+/- There will be about 500kgs on the trucks as well, certainly in one of them. I would not consider going any distance with less than 35 psi in the truck’s tyres. The trailer tyres are inflated to the recommended 90psi. These are farm trucks and trailers used on all road types but only very mild off-road with these kinds of loads. Nothing too taxing. Even unloaded without towing I know that on metalled roads my tyres would overheat at 25psi. Been there plenty of times years ago with my Land Cruiser 100 with original Michelin tyres and replacement Toyo then back to a revised Michelin model. As they say, your mileage varies from mine but so be it.

Fuel use not too bad given a Patrol TD42 and TB48 would be in the mid to high 20s, as would a Cruiser, towing you're weight. Hell, a bog standard GU Patrol TB48s is lucky to get 19 around town. Daughters have them, and are poorer for the experience. Good vid!

I am in SA on a last trip with the old Freelander II; my Grenadier was delayed but due next ship. The little Landrover still surprises me. It is consistently 7.2 litres of diesel to the 100 - that part has been significant... The electronics of our other VWs and the Freelander key's quirkiness! The Grenadier is a new direction for us... It's simple, as I don't need the extra fluffy bits... It's gratifying IG owners happily share their learning process for us all.

That road is a damn highway compared to my first trip to Chillagoe in 1977 in a CJ5 and a Honda 250 on the back! Great trip and lovely area!

Hi Tony, I bet the 77 trip was an adventure! The road was actually good in many respects. The surface was pretty rough in parts an the local ranger at Chillegoe said it can change (deteriorate) very quickly depending on the weather. I think the width of the road is considering the road train traffic that uses it. Do you still have the Jeep by any chance?? Thanks for your commenting, John

No it was when we were in senior and a mates elder brother owned the CJ5 who was a mad adventurer took 3 of us up caving. He is now 70 and has 3 long base LandRovers and I have a Dec20 LC200. dirt is right, Au is the most boring country I live here, I have a d4 254 hp 600 nm torque and a 1800 atm van, yet, I am loathe to travel, all ya do is chuck diesel in daily which cost an arm and a leg, drive all day see the same ole same same ole I am a lover of nature, BUT!! hell, I'll take Europe any day
