I loved the last one, and love this one too. Contractions and reductions are absolutely crucial for intelligibility--the side by side scenes really demonstrate just how important they are. Gonna use these in my class--Thanks!

Rachel, thanks a lot. It's really really helpful to me. I have suffered from pronunciation. I couldn't understand English because of a lot of reductions and contractions. So I have had a hard time of it. :( . But I'm happy to see your video clip. I'll improve my pronunciation and speaking thanks to you.

learning English is difficult... Learn with reductions is almost impossible! It is enough for me to learn standard English and being understood. Thank you very much for the effort, though.

Hey Rachel, I dont know if it is only me but when I hear " I'd love the coffee though" , I feel like the the "d" is kind of silenced or is it because you speak too fast, the "d" sounds very light?

Ok. So what you mean is we should reduce and contract in order to expand our knowledge and ability to communicate in English. A kind of yin yang thing, isn't it?

Thank you for the video. Obviously if we watch these videos is because we want to sound more American; but, is there a prejudice with people that have an accent in the US? I can understand that if you are not clear then you make people uncomfortable; but if you are clear, is it really that bad to have an accent? By the way, you guys look like trouble makers (rascals) when doing your American version. Nice to see that you guys use humor; it makes the experience quite fun. Thanks.

I agree and disagree with this video. I feel these kinds of lessons help with listening comprehension. It also depends on who is learning English where. Being in the US learning with native speakers, this kind of lesson is good because we can hear people speaking like this in public. However, for those not living in native English speaking countries, the formal English may be better to speak because of a lack of exposure. In my target market, I help Indians (who's native languages are Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, etc.) to speak better with Americans. I would give them these kinds of lessons for listening comprehension and they can practice speaking this in the class, but I do not recommend doing this for business calls as only some phrases or contractions will be used, and fluency will sound off. I also think that since most of these Indian employees speak over the phone, and not in person, and for business, it's better to speak full English and be more formal with clients and colleagues than informal. It also helps to be clearer to overcome problems with the technical aspects of the call such as phone or net connections. Thank you.

Even in an American work environment there is more formality of speech, but not to the extent seen with the first couple. If an American spoke that way to another person, they would be perceived as annoyingly pretentious and quickly find themselves socially isolated. This has a lot to do with American history and culture, which prizes equality regardless of social station. Rachel, for example, has a Master's Degree (which typically means 7 years of college after high school), she has also studied abroad, and she lives in Manhattan, one of the most expensive places to dwell on the face of the planet; all of which means that she belongs to the upper strata of society, but you would never know that from the informality of her public persona.
