Folks, there's a new 8 GB Raspberry Pi out there! These things are getting very powerful for there size! And that means more things you can do with them! One of those things is remoting into a Windows PC and using its resources. This is known as a "thin client". A "thin client" is a small computer that's basically used for the sole purpose of connecting to a more powerful remote computer. So in this video, we're going to take a Raspberry Pi and turn it into a thin client for a remote Windows computer!

Comments made me too scared to do port forwarding on my router, opted for chrome remote desktop instead. Usability seems to be defined by up/download speeds of the networks your connected to with your "mainframe" and "terminal" machines. Thanks for vid!

Great content, good to see your videos again! Another neat thing you can do is setup Wake on Lan in the windows PC with a DNS server so that you can turn it on over the internet. I've been playing around with Pi 3b+ and the Parsec software to play games remotely, but i've got some performance issues (lag in the video decoding maybe) so far. There's also Moonlight for this purpose but i didnt test it yet. How did the latency feel on your setup? did it feel 'usable'?

Hi Leonardo, could you please enlighte me if I can achieve 4k resolution with Rpi in the Windows remote access?
@MrLeonardoibarra
@MrLeonardoibarra Жыл бұрын
@@marcelo_luz I believe you cannot, rpi 3b+ (the one i had) supports a max. of 1080p, and it`s probably going to be laggy if you use that resolution with Parsec (the remote access software i used), rpi 4 probably supports 4k but it is not compatible with Parsec yet, so you would need to find another option.

When I RDP to a Windows machine on Debian based Linux distros, I use Remmina as I can add multiple computers and customise all sorts of settings on an easy to use GUI. It works and looks similar to the Remote Desktop Client Microsoft made for macOS.

So I've actually been looking into this as I have a homelab and old laptops laying around. Basically what i wanted was a FOSS version of Dell WYSE and I think the best way for me was make a custom debian os. However someone from China made a CentOS version called JYOS which basically has everything that I wanted. Only issue, needs a license key. Maybe one day though.. Right? Shouldn't be too hard.

Hey, I was reading about a guy who set up his car with multiple webcams and microphones to monitor everything that happens in and around the car. Sort of a dashcam on steroids. The footage was sent to the cloud so that it couldn't be tampered with, in case he got killed during a carjacking or something. When I read this I thought it would be good project for you to a video on. It's beyond my skills, but I know you can do it.

So, I'm trying to do something similar here. I want to put my main desktop on another room and use a cheap laptop connected to both of my monitors. Is there a good way of remoting into my desktop with great performance? Using both monitors on the host PC would be cool too, as I would only be using the laptop as a thin client. Back when I was using Windows, RDP was marvellous on the local network and the performance was almost identical to being connected directly. But this time I'll be using a Linux distro on *both* machines. I've already tried VNC a lot of times, but the performance of both image and input is horrible. I think RDP is HW accelerated? I plan on doing some gaming, but mainly just programming and internet browsing. I *might* be able to connect the monitors directly, only need a long DVI cable. Any help is appreciated.
@GeoNeilUK
@GeoNeilUK 3 жыл бұрын
RDP is only accelerated on Windows, meanwhile on Linux, I can't think of any remoting system that uses hardware acceleration, though I could be wrong. I use X2GO, but that won't be good enough for gaming. You could try Nomachine.

You're better off enabling chrome remote desktop that way it is tied to your google account login and you can do 2 factor authenticate so your connection is harder to hack. also you don't need to change any settings just install chrome remote desktop and add a pin, then input the pin on the pi to login to the windows machine.

Some dumb questions as new to this and you seem to know what you are talking about ;). Is the video an example of port forwarding as i had read this had security issues? I would like to remote connect to my home PC from a clients location (outside LAN) and I am looking for the best / most secure way to do this. I did purchase Express VPN (was rated highly) but they do not support remote access. All assistance will be massively appreciated. Cheers

Anyone watching this video!!!! Please do not forward RDP. This is screaming for your machine to get hacked. Please do pivpn, openvpn, rdp gateway, something! but rdp on public internet. You will be surprised how fast that machine and tons of other stuff on your network will be compromised. The use of the pi as a thin client is a GREAT concept on your network. Not over the open internet.
