A husband wants to get rid of the nanny. His wife doesn't agree.
CONTROL is used with permission from Tom Tennant. Learn more at tomtennant.co.uk.
Mike and Olivia are a couple with a young family living in London. But as their children are getting older, Mike thinks they should let go of their au pair, Sofia, who's been with them for four years.
Olivia, however, is reluctant to let Sofia go, which causes disagreement with her husband. Olivia wants to convince Mike to keep Sofia on... but she has to do so without revealing her ulterior motives.
Writer-director Tom Tennant's short drama takes a traditional potboiler of a situation -- a family, a nanny, some tension -- and applies a coolly cerebral, observational approach to it, creating a quietly incisive portrait of a troubled home whose roiling discontents bubble under the surface.
The aesthetic is very clean, almost minimalist, with nearly all elements of craft stripped down to its essentials. The muted palette and artfully composed images have an almost standoffish beauty to them, and the almost documentary-like camerawork captures small details, especially the fleeting reactions and unspoken feelings. But it also has a feeling of claustrophobia and even sterility, portraying an emotional world of pristine but empty surfaces.
The script doesn't pad its story with a lot of dialogue or action, keeping action confined to the home and the forward momentum carried by revelations of the underlying dynamics in the home. This momentum is accomplished subtly, through the use of small flashes to the past and finely tuned observation of how this household do and do not communicate -- all of which offer small but crucial puzzle pieces that fall into place.
Because of the pared-down writing, the performances do a lot of the heavy lifting to move the story forward. The small ensemble cast is strong, particularly with actors Sharon Young and Pia Laborde-Noguez, who play Olivia and Sofia, respectively. Both give performances that are subtle, restrained and precise, oscillating between moments of truth and concealment that form the core of the drama.
True to its vision, the drama and climax of CONTROL don't come with a lot of "sturm und drang." Instead, like much of the rest of the film, it unfurls in a furtive way, as Olivia makes a crucial decision -- one that is aimed to get her what she wants without giving her motives away. It's quiet but chilling -- but heightens questions of how power, influence and autonomy work in this family, and how far we are willing to go to get what we want.

If you look at the time line of events : - they were meant to keep the nanny only for 1 year - but kept her for 4 years. They have two children, one that's 6 and another that's going into nursery ( so 3 years old. ) In the first place, the reason why the nanny's stay was extended was because the mum internationally gave birth to another child, who'd need taking care of. She does this again in the end. Also, the first sequence in the bathroom where the knob falls off and needs screwing in, is a metaphor for the mother's problem ( getting stuck in the bathroom) is resolved by getting impregnated by her husband ( screwing the knob. ) But the second time she's stuck in the bathroom because of the unscrewed in knob, she is saved by her daughter, Francesca, who helps her screw it in. Reminding the mother of her previous solution to the problem.

There is no continuity to the affair, just two quick scenes. I think it is a possibility that she wants this but it never actually happened. Nothing implies the discussion at the dinner table is a fantasy but the mom is curious about the nanny's plans revealed that they haven't discussed. Based on that, I have no reason to think that the sexual encounters were not real as well. No one doubts that the original plans were that the nanny would be there for one year. Has the mom been having these sexual fantasies for nearly four years? Has the mom been flushing her birth control pills down the drain for four years because of a fantasy? The husband knows but doesn't want confrontation, that's why he wants her to leave, he sees how they are together, the wife is at a crossroads. She knows what she wants but will lose financial stability and disrupt her kids lives. And the Nanny is young and has no other means of support.

I like the way you put it here because it’s not as simple as the wife wants to keep the nanny around and keep her affair going, so she’s planing to have an “unexpected pregnancy”, but I feel like that’s what a lot of people have boiled it down to. In reality she knows it can’t go on the way it is forever, and she will eventually have to make a decision, or the husband will confirm his suspicions and decide he’s going to leave.
@clasencoach
@clasencoach 10 ай бұрын
How would she lose financial stability? Is that assuming the husband is the (main) provider?? If she was a housewife, they would not need a nanny in the first place. And the husband says ‘see you at work’, so the wife obviously has a job, perhaps they even run a company together. Besides, their home does not exactly look like they are missing anything material.

I’ve had at least four friends and relatives this very senario has happened to. The wife married the husband , they appear to be in love and sexually attracted . Then one day she decides she has to have a woman and dumps the unsuspecting guy cold . In one case with three kids. It’s almost impossible in a case like this to tell if your lady is gay or not. But it isn’t ever good to lead someone on gay or straight . These guys I’m talking about dearly loved their wives and were devastated. Honesty is a must in a relationship!

I don't mind when people who are in the lgbtq community break up with their straight partners but is it just me or I get furious when they stay with their partner and have an affair with somebody. I'm like yes it is hard to come out but is it really fair to your partner (especially when you have kids) to do that! Yes I know affairs in general are bad but knowing somebody is just with you to hide their true self... It's just heartbreaking! And nobody feels sorry for the person being cheated on (༎ຶ ෴ ༎ຶ) they think their overreacting or something CHEATING IS CHEATING no matter what the situation is. It's still wrong 😭 Just break up with the person! ESPECIALLY don't have kids with them if you don't fancy them! It's ruining and wasting your partner's life, when they could've married somebody who LOVED them who WANTS them for the RIGHT reasons!
@tb45g
@tb45g 2 жыл бұрын
It's bad when anyone stays with their partner and has an affair, lgbtq or not. I don't think anyone doesn't feel bad for the straight partner in these cases. Rather people tend to be more sympathetic to the cheater because they give them the benefit of the doubt that they lied because of societal pressure rather than just selfishness (in reality it's probably a bit of both). Just because people have a little more sympathy for the cheater rather than condemning them outright, doesn't mean they have any less sympathy for the one cheated on. It's not a zero sum game, even though it feels like it.

I think that an incorrect assumption in many a comment here is that Olivia doesn't love or care about her family. I'd guess she genuinely loves her kids, whatever the primary drivers for these kids coming about to begin with. She probably appreciates and cares for Mike as well, even if sexual attraction is not part of the equation for her. People want to believe that affairs happen because someone is a narcissist, a schemer. I don't think it takes a narcissist or schemer to have an affair. But I acknowledge that an affair will generally have a major self-serving component to it. And that it can evolve into, well, robust schemes, as it did here.

@@doracotterell2863 I just asked the question about the significance about the doorknob in another comment. I don't believe that the doorknob issue is significant of the husband's inability. I can see no reason why the husband is even needed for that purpose. It's not rocket science to fix a doorknob, why should it fall to the "man of the house" to do it? She had the ability to fix it, which she did (eventually), so why continue to rely on him? In the beginning, when she refuses his advances, he helps himself. She should have fixed her own problems instead of relying on her husband for little things like this. The doorknob part irked me because it seemed like it was being used to justify the woman's actions and demean the man.

What happens when this au pair decides that being a glorified nanny for someone else's kids and a kept woman isn't good enough anymore? She was meant to be there a year, right, so this benefits thing has probably been going on close to three years. This is one hell of a selfish woman to do this to her husband and her lover.
