There are a series of Control Unleashed Pattern Games developed by Leslie McDevitt that can help us achieve our goals with our dogs be it reactivity/frustration or fear to other dogs, people or even objects
Pattern Games are, according to McDevitt, simple socially driven rule structures that provide a predictable framework for dogs in different environments. They are rule structures that have predictable patterns the dog can learn to depend on. I feel this is very important because we do not want our dogs to feel uncertain or stressed about what is going to happen next. These simple predictable games will create confidence and focus within our dogs. Think of it as telling your dog that yes there is something happening (Trigger) over there but we are engaging in this game right here. Your dog will not/should not have to feel uncertain about what is going to happen next- all creatures us included like to know what is going to happen next especially if we are feeling unsure or frustrated. McDevitt also states there is an element of desensitization to the Trigger in their environment as they are caught up but still very well aware of the trigger I like that dogs will learn to make good behavior choices when and if we need to call upon these games.
Leslie McDevitt developed several pattern games. All should be played in a distraction free area before adding in the Trigger. Once muscle memory is achieved you can add the trigger at a distance under threshold point.
