she explains it at 10 min mark. if he doesnt understand that you grabbing the collar is supposed to make him calm, you need to work on the first exercise again, where you reward him for beeing calm and you grabbing the collar.

This really works!! I have a boxer puppy. I’ve been trying this with her since she was 10 weeks old. She’s now 11 weeks and it really works soon as she nips at me or she bites at me I can pick her up tell her no I hold her collar and I just wait until she calms down once I feel that her body is relaxed. I don’t use treats. When she does the command love and I pet her and I tell her yes and it works so now when she gets ready to bite she kinda knows don’t do that or I’ll tell her no and she she releases. It’s as if she forgets when she nips, but when I tell her no, she releases.

My dog is around 1 year, Ive done some training but usually i toss a treat on the ground. To hold her collar while giving her a treat would be knew to her. Can i still train her? Perhaps i just need patience. Shes big lab, very friendly but also hyper. Its difficult to pet her because she gets so excited and wants to put her teeth on me.

may i ask for an advice for our 6 months old mini bullterrier, he is biting and nipping my gf, and this behaviour is getting out of nowhere, totally random circumstances the dog just start all this really bad and seemingly never stopping behaviour. He is getting really crazy, jumping, biting, really excited and cant and wont stop. we tried many discipline with and nothing seems working - for me nipping stopped, i was not rough but way more firm and used strength as well when the dog was about 4 months old. Not sure that strength is the only way to get the dog calm, we are even thiking that the dog may be dominating already, but not sure if such thing can happen at 5-6 months.

I call this period with my white German Shepherd the blood bath. I found something that I only had to use once and she never bite me again. And it wasn't mean or harmful. I used a spray bottle of water. Now she did however steal it off my dining room table and took it to her dog bed. Where she barked at it. She was and still is hilarious.

Luckily my 19 yr old daughter never locked the front door when she left for work so I managed to get back in without having to go to my neighbors house to call my daughter at work to come home and unlock the door for me. Consider the rule of 3s. Three days to decompress, 3 weeks to start testing their boundaries and learning how the place works, 3 months to really settle in. They don’t just bond, especially if they’ve had some upheaval. Some dogs and breeds will be faster but it sounds like you might want to get them desensitized first because any dog in a fear state could tend to aggression. Try just doing hand feeding but focus on keeping yourself small and calm. No eye contact, soft tones, even for correction. Lots of “you’re okay”. Build trust first, then focus, then you can work on anything you want.

If I try to grab my 10 week old Aussie Shepherd/ border collie’s collar he starts to squirm and bite . He injured my fingers the other day because of his squirming. Also most times we aren’t even playing when he bites. We walk him 1km in the morning and try to play ball outside with him a couple of times and then take him for a 1 or 2km walk before bedtime.
@TheBaumcm
@TheBaumcm Ай бұрын
Sounds like you are using the right formula with exercise. Maybe add some mental stimulation. The smarter the breed, the easier they get bored and the choices they make for entertainment aren’t always wise. Herding dogs are nippy/mouthy by nature. He’s not playing but herding most likely which means he doesn’t need settle but rather correction on what he is and isn’t allowed to herd. I don’t know of any herding specific but check socials to see if there are any herding specific trainers who have some tips. My collie/shepherd mix would randomly grab pants legs when she was bored as we walked by. We took it as a sign to give her a job and would tell her to go find someone or go get one of the other dogs.

@sportysbusiness
@sportysbusiness Ай бұрын
LOL, I have a friend with a red heeler who does the same at her house. Remember, they are a working breed so she's doing exactly what she's bred for. Interestingly, when I look after my friends dog, she gets way more exercise with me (I have 2 dogs and run them daily where she only does long walks at the weekends), I'm very strict with all the dogs and she never displays this behaviour with me...
@TheBaumcm
@TheBaumcm Ай бұрын
Unfortunately, you have a dog bred for this behavior who is also bred to be somewhat independent. They also tend to be one person or one family. You are going to have to make the correction, and take the control/alpha/decision making position because otherwise she will. I agree with making sure she gets enough exercise before guests visit. Also, using positive reinforcement, training her to focus on you rather than the guests (especially difficult with this type of working dog) could be helpful. If you still are having issues, and I say and mean you because you need to learn how to communicate an expected behavior and the heeler is just doing what she is made to do, then try finding some herding training specialists in your area, where they can give you skills to work onto exhaust that drive and to control it.

If treats aren't working, I've tried using affection, different kinds of toys (some prefer certain kinds of play, try looking into what breed group your pup falls into so you can try things they're more likely to enjoy), games they enjoy, or even puzzle toys w treats in them, interacting with something while making their minds work is sometimes more appealing. It can be difficult, but there's usually something, at least that I've been able to find, that they'll find enjoyable and appealing. Hope you guys find the reward you're looking for!

Look up the video on this channel (MCann) titled “The #1 mistake dog owners make feeding” If you’re not making that mistake, then you may have the VERY rare case of low food drive. I thought my puppy wasn’t interested in food until I started doing the things in that video so give it a try! 99% of dogs will take food as a reward if actually hungry and not stressed

Guess I've been lucky or taught my dogs not to bite or nip without knowing. All but two dogs I've had were herding dogs and never had problems with them nipping even though they are predisposed to do so. The worst was my most recent Lancashire Heeler. He would act like he was about to take a mouth sized chunk out of you but soon as he bit down it was the softest little nibble it almost tickled.

for my foster puppies (most 8 to 10 weeks old, I have fostered 15 so far) when they bite aggressively i grab their collar or scruff and give it a few gentle shakes with a firm NO; i use more energy if required. Works all the time and teaches the puppy he needs to listen to me. People should not be afraid to give fair and mild corrections to their puppies/dogs to stop unwanted behavior.
