For the average musician, control voltage is an abstract concept. Of all the aspects of synthesis, it seems to be the most confusing. In this video, Marc gives a straight-forward and easy-to-understand description of the functionality using concrete examples. With a firm grasp of control voltage, synthesis becomes considerably easier and fun!

I thought it was a pretty clear explanation and I came into this really having no idea what they do.

great tutorial for those new to analog and modular synths! Been curious since this is the foundation of synths

This didn't answer the question for me. Yes knobs are built to allow more or less voltage pass thru, or you can apply more voltage to a device with a patch cable. But what is the voltage change actually doing? How does adding more voltage change the pitch, or open the filter, or change the volume?

Voltage Control is like turning that knob. Since the knob controls voltage, if you've got controlled voltage going into module 1 from module 2, module 2's voltage output will directly control the parameters of module 1. So if module 2s voltage is going from +5 to -5 over and over again, the CV in module 1 will be like it's continuously turning the knob right and left since that voltage is being controlled by the other module and not the knob anymore (though, sometimes you can also still use the knob and the CV will just further affect those parameters)

What I can't get is: Why do we need an external cv if you can manipulate filters, oscillators and envelopes in the synthesizer itself? What am I missing in this concept? Thanks for the video.

so that you can change all those things automatically, or at the command of another unit. so that you don't have to wiggle the knobs by hand, you can get on with doing something else. There is a limit to how many knobs you can twiddle yourself, so you can plug in a low frequency oscillator, or an envelope generator or something else, to do it for you.

I guess what trips me up is.... in most applications I know of.... voltage correlates to amplitude. When I think pitch I think frequency.
