I love the presenter in this video. He's entertaining, knowledgeable and rocks out.

Using the editor software for the keystep you can assign the aftertouch to the mod output. That will allow you to use aftertouch for controlling things like the cutoff and res or even the pitch cv on your synths, which is great for adding real-time expression.

Thanks for the video! Please d0 a part 2 about running a DAW into the Keystep and back out to the modular. You mention that in the video, but I'm not sure how that works
@steveapostolides29756 ай бұрын
I’m currently using Waveform 11 as my DAW. I’ve gone many different ways to achieve clocking between DAW and modular, but currently I’m using the usb from my pc into the Keystep 37, then sync out to a 2hp div, so I can distribute from there. The only issue in a way, is that you have to have the arpeggiator or sequencer on the keystep running, to output the sync/clock. Not really a problem, just a minor niggle!😊 You need to set the sync switches on the back to USB, and I found it awkward to figure which way they should be, but not impossible! I haven’t fully explored the MIDI control centre software that comes with the keystep, there may be more to help in there. Hope this helps!

I used Ableton as my midi clock going to a key lab 25 controller via USB, then use midi to other synth sound modules. Depending on how much midi gear you're going to use, getting yourself a midi in/out routing box is a good investment.

Glad I found your channel, really getting into building a rack synth system myself. Started with my pocket operators and my numerous headphone amps and dacs. Getting crazy ground loop so I got a rack mounted power conditioner. Then a rack mount 10 band EQ. And it's growing, but now I want a small eurorack to go along with whatever small synth I decide to buy. Going to watch the $500 build video next. Thanks man.

Mapping the velocity or aftertouch of a keystep to slightly modulate a parameter on a eurorack module adds massive amounts of expression while playing.

Just a few questions if anyone could answer it. You said the gate out is going into the maths controlling the VCA and the filter. What is it doing to the sound? Also if there is a knob for a certain function why would I want to plug a cv connection into it when I could just turn the knob? The pedal connection, is that a TS or TRS cable? Thanks perfectcircuit for doing this video, just had a few questions because I don't really understand some of it.
@VictorSteiner2 жыл бұрын
CV us used to modulate OVER TIME. so you don‘t need to perfectly wiggle 4 knobs with 2 hands at the same time. Maths can be used as an Attack-Decay envelope, so the signal goes up, then down. Maths can change the speed of each of those stages AND if the rise is linear or exponential. Sending that envelope to both filter and vca means you can shape how the filter and vca open OVER TIME. longer attack long decay sound more like a wind instrument, while 0 attack and short decay make it sound like a kickdrum.

open and CLOSE of course.

The cable is what's called a "floating ring" cable, TS on the 3.5mm side but TRS on the 1/4" side. Some pedals do specialized stuff with the ring but general CV applications only care about the tip. Some pedals don't work if you connect the ring straight to ground so the floating ring cable leaves it unconnected

My story. So Ive making music like this since 97. So I thought I'd get into the syths setups etc. They said oh just plug anything into anything....ya didn't work turns out you need to know what cv etc does. Wasn't for me. To much going on to make music. And to be frank it's a very pretentious way to make music.
@looksee1001 Жыл бұрын
Apart from the fact that it's an expensive way to do music (so might attract some pretentious peeps) it seems to me to be super basic. With minimal gear you're pitch steps can be completely atonal and your phrases are likely outside your control and very repetitive. For me, that's refreshingly down to earth. I'm a seasoned jazz/classical pianist and I love tonal / classical music and I find modular synth stuff to be so unconcerned with the stuffiness of and closed mindedness of popular music

Easy my ass. Eurorack is the most frustrating thing musically I have ever attempted. I have tried for weeks to make this work, and it's enough to want to sell everything. A complete waste of time and money. No matter what I do, my keystep never stops droning. I can trigger notes. I can can get the filter and envelope to work. But that stupid keyboard will keep droning... forever. My setup SHOULD be easy: A nifty rack, key step, Behringer 110 and 140. Watched more videos I can stand. Read the manuals. Doesn't matter.

Frustrating for me too. Nearly all vids are aimed at people who understand this shit anyway. Nothing of the basics. Makes you wonder how people learned in the first place. I just wish there was a Modular club near me. Would learn tonns then.
