I love it when everything goes as planned. The weather was perfect and I had a couple friends come over to help me burn off a field that is about 10 acres. In this video you can see some of the fire lines we had in place. We also had a brush truck with us just in case things got out of hand.

Cool video. For our compound in Idaho we have a trailer with three 300 gallon tanks on it, plumbed to a high pressure pump with a hundred feet of hose and an adjustable nozzle. Works great. I break it out when the neighbors want to burn too. It's good to have friends help out when burning.Gil

Good burn. I have a 200 acre pine tree farm in Jones county, GA (middle GA). I wanted to have a prescribed burn last year. However, the GA Forestry Service was backed up cutting fire breaks. They put me on the list but never got through the list... Heavy equipment needed to cut through forested property. No fire break... no prescribed burn. And this year... drought like conditions had me sitting on the edge of the chair that no careless cigarette butts would be flicked to the side of the road and cause a catastrophic wildfire. That Gatlinburg, TN wildfire sent shivers down my spine.

Dang that's no fun. I bet it doesn't take much to get those pine needles burning really hot.

Yes, it has been eight years since I managed the last prescribed burn. Fuel load had increased an awful lot with both forest litter of pine needs, leaves, and dead branches, plus, I had the stand thinned of some pulpwood a few years ago, to make way for remaining trees to grow into timber size. There are lots of fuel remnants from this pulping harvest with much discarded dead tree matter on the ground. Thus, with all the fuel on the ground... a wildfire could be devastating. (And with a newborn child now at home... I have no idea when I will have time to plan/manage a prescribed burn. phooey.)

I’m going to ask a dumb question. Why did u burn your land
@ArmsFamilyHomestead
@ArmsFamilyHomestead 6 жыл бұрын
It just helps improve the land. It kill out lots of small unwanted trees and shrubs in the fields. Everything just comes back stronger int he spring after burning off all of the old dead thatch layer.

Another good reason is to remove fire hazards. Burned-off land is far less inclined to be accidentally set afire later, when conditions may prevent its control.

Other than that, keep it up, doing a fine job. Others need to start doing this.

so many questions! I want to burn off our lagoon but am scared i am going to set the county on fire. Can you do a video on techniques and best practices... or are there to many liability issues that go along with making that video?

Oh gosh that could be a huge list of precautions. Every scenario is different depending on the landscape if the specific area. Fire lines in dead grass will look completely different than ones I'm timber/wooded areas. I would suggest finding someone in your area with some experience to help you out the first few times

Yep. we do know some one here that would probably do it... just haven't him asked yet. He's kind of a grumpy ole guy... i'm not sure he would let me watch or help. Thanks and God bless!

Maybe ask the firemen/people if they want some practice or training for their new guys. Sorry, didn't see this was from 2 years ago.

That is really cool to see. Do you do the controlled burn for hunting purposes or for your goats to graze on? Thanks. -Dave

Both really. It just helps the overall quality of the land. All of the animals love the fresh green that pops up after a burn. The main thing for me is that it keep the unwanted brush from taking over.

Today me and my friend launched a model rocket it and it caught our yard on fire and the fire depo. Had to come. How do people just do this without destroying everything

Well there's more too it than just starting the fire and letting it burn. We do lots of planning. We put in fire breaks with a tractor, have atvs with water sprayers. But most importantly we wait for the right weather and wind before we start.

Not to be grumpy ole saftey Sally here, but, I would say you guys should wear some flame resistant clothing while doing this. I say like nomex pants and flame resistant boots. I would honestly hate to see one of you guys get burned really bad from the flame itself or just the really intense heat.

Burning off the old dead grass allows the field to come back fresh and clean. Within a couple week this field was starting to green up for spring. It also allows us to kill off weed and brush without the use of chemicals.
