I don't get it why people dislike a video. 15 years ago there were not even a single video about modeling techniques and we would stay in front of the pc for hours to fix meshes and wonder what's the easy way to do things. Yet nowadays people will find it easier to just go on KZbin and search(power of technology). Give this guy some props for taking his time in making a video for extreme beginners. I had trouble with polymodeling like everyone else. If there are easier methods into doing what he has done, why not make a video, put on KZbin and be done with it rather then disliking a video because is not for your liking. I wish I could had these kind of videos when I started.

The way i see it there will always be people who will like and dislike a video. I would never want to be in a position where people would simply not dislike a video. What i would love those is for anyone that would dislike a video to leave a comment saying as to why they didn't like it so hopefully next time i make a video i can make it even better so they will like that one. Cheers to you though for taking me back 10-12 years back when i was starting out and when there was nothing to go on and learn but your own curiosity :)

Great stuff there. Two tips for you and other people, dont know if it has been said in comments : - Function "set flow" (can be a keyboard shortcut) will move your edges or vertices in the "flow" of your model. It's hard to explain in english as it's not my mother language, but can be very usefull to smooth your object. - 10:56 : At multiple occasions in this video you could have used the function "Select similar" in the graphite modeling toolbar (can be set as a shortcut too). In this case you pick the two vertices and do "select similar", it would have selected the 3x2 other vertices. Then "collapse" (also as a shortcut on my setup). Basically i would have selected the two vertices then alt+S (my select similar shortcut) and ctrl+D (my collapse shortcut). Done.

There is a much much easier and efficient way of doing this. After extruding the regularised loop, go back to edge select > it will retain the circular edge selection > press extrude > reset the height to 0 and adjust the width to get your desired edge width. Now you just gave to collapse the verts that are on the corners that have small triangles and you get a perfect edge that will work with sub-D. =).

Instead of directly extruding inward just do an inset then extrude, you will get good result

Idea was to help people who are starting out and running into this issue. I actually had a few people asking me different questions about different models that boil down to this issue. So that's why i made this short video to hopefully help them understand how not to run into this problem in the future.

it does it automatically once you install the script, it only works if you are in edit poly edge mode however it wont show if you are using edit poly in modifier stack.

I think this manual method is a bit outdated now, as in newest versions of Max(or with Marius Silaghi plugin in older versions) you can just use quad chamfer on those edges and it works perfectly geometry wise. But for me most annoying thing about adding details on curved surfaces is that it messes up UV's. Fixing geometry is not a big deal, but if you need to apply repetitive texture to it (like a checker), here comes the pain... As turbosmooth will make it wobbly and ugly around that inserted detail in 90% of cases. And unwrapping smoothed (HP) models in Max is a nightmare.
@DenisKeman
@DenisKeman 4 жыл бұрын
I do agree that with newer versions you get an easier workflow, and even with the quad chamfer fixing most of the issues but people still show me models with these simple issues and then wonder how to fix the pinching issues they get. So i decided to make one short video instead of having to explain this multiple times to multiple people :) As for UV's, that's a given that whenever you play around with the geometry you will have to do a proper unwrap. And doing UV's in Max is not hard, it's just unadvisable if you like your sanity. That's why i usually take the Unfold3D way, or the RizonUV as it's now called.
@nicktyler2572
@nicktyler2572 4 жыл бұрын
That's a just cause, sir :) And true... Max's UVeditor can drive nuts even most stable mind) I used to work with UVLayout for years, but few months ago switched to Rizom too. Kinda awesome software. Only sad thing with it is that you have to collapse stack before exporting model there. And in case of this sphere... making 2 UV sets, one for LowPoly, and 2nd for HighPoly would be annoying too (to make texture look similar on smoothed/unsmoothed model).

hmm this method isn't that good, Why not just use chamfer or bevel depend on the software that people use? just select the edge of the circle and chamfer it, why all this complication when u can do it in 3 sec? by doing what u did, u destroyed the edges flow around the new circle. and u introduced another artifact on the rendering.
