Invasive European Green Crabs have arrived in Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site and they’re posing a major threat to native marine life habitat. But there’s hope! Go behind the scenes with a team of dedicated scientists from Parks Canada and the Council of the Haida Nation as they work together to control the invasive Green Crab population and conserve the delicate ecosystem in Haida Gwaii.

The European Green Crab is one of the most unwanted invasive species worldwide for its tendency to disrupt the balance of marine ecosystems. It first arrived in San Francisco in 1989 by ship and within 10 years, larvae of the invasive species was unknowingly transported north up to Vancouver Island’s west coast, and have now recently been found in Haida Gwaii.

"remove it from the environment" I am presuming that means it's killed -? Is it then used to some other purpose: - feed for some other animal - compost - some other use that I'm not thinking of?

Parks Canada takes actions to preserve national parks and contribute to the recovery of species at risk. As the European Green Crabs are invasive species that have been accidentally introduced by human activities and are affecting marine ecosystems and threaten species at risk, they are removed from the environment when captured. On Haida Gwaii, the Council of the Haida Nation is composting them.
