I even think of the logistics and testing and R&D money on a new ball that just isn't needed. Plus, if a golfer is serious about becoming a professional, at what point would they need to play and practice with the new ball. Would course records then be criticized? There's so much that goes into it that just isn't really needed. Love the conversation that went on though, keep up the great content guys, let's get ya to 10K followers!

As an owner of a working cocker myself, hear some anecdotal differences of the cocker spaniels :) A "Working cocker" is bread to help around the farm or hunt as Kieran said. Therefor he is usually more athletic in build, has shorter fur and shorter ears. A "Show Cocker" is a spaniel which rather looks like "Lady" - longer ears, longer flowing fur and is bread to look elegant for dog shows :)

The tortilla soup debate had me ROLLING. It’s a type of soup that’s popular in the southwest of America, it’s really quite good. The soup base is like a thin tomato ish broth. Tortilla chip strips are the topper, hence tortilla soup His dessert is often referred to as a “pizookie” it’s probably gonna be a thick cookie baked in a small cast iron skillet with a scoop or two of ice cream on top. You generally eat it straight out of the skittle family style.

Get shout about the short game. Could they not just grow the rough half a foot and bring the fairways tighter? And then this can be fixed much easier for the amateurs after comp moves on to the next course? So don’t punish distance, punish accuracy and then perhaps players will play shorter to be rewarded with a fairway

I think this whole argument about the golf ball is silly.. Golf pros are the best of the best. They should be allowed to use the best of the best equipment. If there's an ultra low-spinning driver available that ONLY Rory can hit - so be it. If that means there's a 400yd Par 4 that is now effectively a Par 3 - so be it. In other sports - football, tennis, even motorsports - it's the athlete that is another level. Man City win 4/5 PLs in a row, you don't see the FA say "well, now they must have 10 men in PL games". Federer dominated tennis for years along with Nadal - they didn't make them use old Steel racquets. F1 has a lot of artificial controls but look how much that's hated pretty much across the board. I remember British Touring Car racing almost died a death when they started introducing ballast weighting for race winners. Horrible idea! BTCC from mid-late 90s was absolute PEAK!! If one day Joe Bloggs comes along and can drive a Par 5 green at 620yards - so be it. That's progression. It SHOULD be allowed I think. They shouldn't even limit the face spring-effect as far as i'm concerned. Let them use the best of the best equipment. The fastest cars, the fastest club etc.. If they REALLY want to protect the course - standardise lofts for all clubs and maybe increase the lofts. Lets manufacturers do what they will to the clubs in terms of technology and things, but standardise the lofts. All drivers say 10.5, all 3W 15, then an 18 degree and increments of 3 degrees from there etc.. If a player can hit the ball harder than others, all it'd do is spin up. It's up to the player to overcome it.

My view on the rollback of the ball is that it doesn't bother me one bit. I won't watch more golf, and they already play a different game to me, as a bog standard 18 handicapper. Question? How would this affect the influencers like Pete.

Playing your handicap against a pro is not playing a pro (or any other player demonstrably superior to you in stroke play) on an equal field. They're better than you and that's all there is to it. Even if you best them with your handicap, you still lost if it took you more strokes and you know it. The asterisk of only winning because of your handicap is always there. Always. The only purpose of bothering to keep a handicap at an amateur level is gambling and tournaments that are under the misperception that a 20-handicap can both genuinely compete with and beat a scratch golfer because of some stupid handicap system. If you take more strokes you lost. Period. End of story. Golf comes down to this: You are good or you are not and no BS number that equates your play relative to your ability only is not going to change that.

On the distance of pros, look at the belfry, the brabazon, one of the most historic tracks in the Ryder cup. It’s much shorter than most other top tier courses. I played it when I was playing off 18 2 years ago & shot an 84 I’m convinced now I play off 8 I would shoot mid 70s easily. If they reduce how far you can hit the ball it would make that course a challenge again. I get it & I understand the argument but I don’t like it…

Great podcast and fun conversation about beans and greens. As for rolling back ball technology, i am not sure that would do much if it only reduces length by 10-15 yards. Limiting club loft and face response on drivers and woods seems a more feasible change without diffusing the game too much.

Even if they rollback the golf ball, golfers will find a way to continue to hit the ball further. Then what? Courses wouldn’t have to get longer. They could make the fairways more narrow, have longer rough, add bunkers/hazards. Yes adding hazards would cost some money for the course, but it would keep the game level across the board. It would make players look at risk vs reward

It's already been happening in golf for decades though. You can get a tee time on the Old Course and play there with the exact same equipment as some of the pros. You can choose to play from the tips there, but you will be playing a course which is about 600 yards shorter than the 150th Open Championship course with pins that aren't nearly as difficult. I like the idea that we're playing the same game as the pros, but we have to admit that we're not doing that to begin with.
@ROSER6410 Жыл бұрын
Altering the equipment does not seem a practical solution compared to the ball change. Can you imagine Taylormade trying to sell their new driver in 2026, it goes 30% less distance and has 20% less forgiveness compared to last year, buy now! They cannot outlaw the old equipment at the stroke of midnight, they will have to grandfather it all out. So second hand value will go through the roof. If a change needs to be made, big IF, then the ball is a simple option for some courses that need it, but not all.
@quinnreilly7681 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, balls are the only disposable equipment. Some people only buy two or three drivers in a lifetime.

So rules make golf boring now? ☠️
@JonasKFriedChicken Жыл бұрын
So the goverining bodies have to do something with distance at the pro level. When the absolute longest guys on tour can cut doglegs and ignore fairway bunkers, it's exciting. If the driving average keeps rising by 7-10 yards every decade, and half the tour can cut all the doglegs and ignore fairway bunkers, it will be less exciting. I like using Bryson's drive over the water at Bay Hill as an example. That shot was a truly exciting moment, with a massive risk. If the shot was made from one tee forward with a slower ball, would it still be as exciting? I think it would. Now in 20 years if the driving average is 320 yards and a third of the field drives it past the water, would it still be as exciting? I don't think it would.

Would NBA be better, if the field would be made longer each year? Or is football better, the longer players can kick the ball? I think changing the ball to fly shorter, doesn't change the idea that you could use same equipment as pro's. There is no reason why anyone could not buy the same equipment. I think the rule change would be good, because it would make other parts of the game more important. It is boring that modern golf is only about length and making it easier. I choose to play golf, not because it is easy, but because it is hard. :D

I don’t like the ball rollback at all. The courses will simply have to change if they want to host professional events. They don’t have to get longer, they can grow the rough, add bunkers, add ponds and other water hazards, reduce fairway widths, and many other things.
@quinnreilly7681 Жыл бұрын
That’s infinitely more expensive and complicated than adjusting already-existing ball standards. Every sport regulates equipment, this is no different. I do think the standards should be the same for everyone, but I think that’ll happen anyway. Longer and straighter balls already exist and no one uses them.
@LeprechaunGinger Жыл бұрын
If you don’t like low scores, just make the greens faster and rough longer. No need to spend any money and keep ball the same. Viewers don’t complain about more birdies. This is the pretentious ruling bodies!
@quinnreilly7681 Жыл бұрын
@@LeprechaunGinger None of this has anything to do with low scores. It’s about wanting the game to stay balanced and exciting. As guys get longer off the tee it greatly increases the importance of the driver and greatly reduces their use of long and mid irons. It also means certain elements of course designs no longer come into play. And it gets harder to design courses for both pros and amateurs to play on. For instance, a lot of the drama on par-5s comes from the risk/reward of players deciding to go for the green in two or laying up. If most players can reach the green in two with a 5i or 6i, suddenly that drama disappears. It’s not about low scores, it’s about the way the game is played.

From my point of view, we’re already not playing the same game with the same equipment. The pros have gear that isn’t available to the public. Manufacturers make tour spec clubs. They make tour only clubs. They make tour only balls (left dash Pro V, Left dot Pro V). The make pros custom clubs (Justin Thomas, Adam Scott). The idea we're playing the same game is ridiculous. Maybe it's more of a comparison for someone who kind of has access to that world (Pete), but for most of us it's a completely different game, so who cares?

Not sure the argument they we like to use the same as pros stacks up. You'll still be able to do that, you just might choose not to. In the meantime... Course design is so much a part of the game and has been designed around how far the ball goes... Any way not to throw away decades of amazing course design has to be a good thing. Club faces are already limited to not be so "hot"... Not sure why there is so go outrage here... There are probably more important things to worry about...

I think the arguments against rolling the ball back are emotional more than anything. First you say having pros play a different ball than ams is antithetical to the game but then suggest changing equipment. If they do that either everyone gets punished, including the 99.99% or we’re back to different equipment (by the way how many ams play blades?). There are already a half dozen versions of a ProV1 so who cares if there’s one more? And ams could play it if they want to hit it shorter but who would? So just change the courses. Adding the tee at Augusta cost $30M, for one hole. Yeah I’m sure every course can afford to redo their course. “Drives only got 4 yards longer in a year”. Yeah so that will be 40 yards in 10 years and that 300 yard par 4 will be a 5 iron. Real exciting. The longest will still be the longest. 99.99% of pro golf is watched on TV where we have no idea how far Rory hit it unless they tell us. Would a 300 yard drive that’s 20 yards past their competitors be boring if you didn’t know it used to be 340? Especially if they now can’t blow it over bunkers, have to take different lines over water and par 5’s are actually par 5’s? The ones who should be bitching are the Champions tour. They’ve already lost distance and now they’ll lose even more. But I don’t hear any of them complaining.
