'Controversial!': The Crown's Netflix depiction of Princess Diana could have Royals worried. This week on Palace Confidential: While viewers around the world will be eagerly anticipating the arrival of series five of The Crown, the mood behind Palace walls seems far from happy. Early indications suggest that the new episodes, covering Diana’s departure from the Royal Family and untimely death will paint the Firm in the worst possible light. It couldn’t come at a worse time for our new King, argues the Daily Mail’s Diary Editor Richard Eden.
‘It’s awful because it’s really focusing on the lowest, the worst part of his life, just at the start of what should be a happy period, really, being king, yes his mother’s died, but it’s a new start,’ he tells our royal talk show Palace Confidential. ‘Instead, it’s dragging all this up again, leading up to the tragic death of Diana so it’s going to be grim. He’s just got to grin and bear it.’ The Mail on Sunday’s Assistant Editor Kate Mansey says friends of the King are extremely unhappy about the prospect of the new storylines.
‘It was described to me by one very senior friend of the King that it’s trolling on a Hollywood budget,’ she tells the programme. ‘That’s what you’re seeing: it’s slick, it’s magnificent, but Charles is presented as a callous, horrible, feckless husband, it plays to the script to make it very dramatic that he’s the baddie, Diana’s the goodie and that’s how it was. And there’ll be some people who believe that and that’s the danger.’

I am an American. Is that why I am so often left scratching my head at this program's presenters and the content? It is so inconsistent to me that they would include her wedding picture in the montage which they called the royals in their finest jewels -- why include her? She abandoned her post as a "royal" and is now a former royal. She has acted the traitor to your royal family? They make the monarchy look ridiculous and frivolous by including her. The Variety piece is nothing more than an example of how much she depends on her status as Harry's wife for her relevance in the world. Any actor/actress who portrays a well-known public person is stepping into a minefield. Any movie, made for TV series, or any other portrayal should start off with the disclaimer that the program is fiction and not intended to represent a factual presentation of the person(s) or the event(s). Especially, today when the line between fact and fiction has become so blurred. In my opinion, 'literary license' has in some instances run not just off the track, but over the cliff. I would think that the entity responsible for the production and release of the item would want to ensure that they have not left the door open for litigation or for the sullying of the actual person(s) character and reputation by excessive use of 'innuendo'.

I think by now that none of us is surprised at the lengths to which Meghan will go to see her name and face splayed out for all to see - provided she has control over the circumstances. It's kind of the only way that a D-list 'actress' gets a 'centerfold spread' with her clothes on. Must be so sad to be so desperate for attention. Surely you know that when accusations are first levelled, it creates an impression that sticks in people’s minds. That is the basis of demonizing people..level an accusation...and when it is discovered to be wrong, the apology is printed in small print on the back pages of the paper, or decades later and the original accusation remains, having polluted the reputation of millions potentially. There was no warm relationship with the Queen. The outing the Queen took her on was a disaster with M treating Her Magesty with assumed familiarity that repulsed the public. She never really had a relationship at all with the Queen, even to being banned from a meeting QE11 had with Harry, told to "wait in another room". Rightfully so, it seems the Queen was anything but fond of her, but always civil. Both backtracking now to save their own guilty skins. And Charles was certainly not blameless in the destruction of his marriage. He married a beautiful young girl who was in love with him, who, in his own words, was naive, and on their honeymoon he made it clear that he would not give up Camilla. Diana became what she did, slowly but surely, because he was so callous. You have short memories.

So transparent. Harry stopped his mental development at 12 when his mother died. He maintains Diana on a pedestal, to be talked about as if she were some chaste goddess. In reality, she was quite the opposite----stalking men, married/divorced/single, calling their homes, sometimes over 100 times in one evening. She just "had to be loved" at all costs. She saw her charity work as gaining her the love and admiration she craved. Like Markle, she had to be in front of the cameras at all times. Like Markle, she was mentally unhinged at times. Read the books and you'll learn a lot!

I have enjoyed watching The Crown in the past, knowing of course that it was fictionalized . I tried watching season 5 episode 1 and didn’t enjoy it. In a strange way it felt like mockery. I was a young adult when these events were unfolding and I can’t seem to navigate that uncanny valley between the real people and the actors. To me it was lacklustre and I don’t think that I’ll continue watching.
