Thanks for your video. I have a pineapple green cheek Conure. He is 1 year old, full of fun and mischief too. I wanted to tell people just because these birds are not known for their ability to talk doesn’t mean they can’t. My bird already says at least a dozen phrases. He says Treat! Treat! And he knows very well that means!

If a conure is biting don't hate him/her, find the reasons why, ask questions like, is he sleeping 12 hours? Am I giving proper attention like playing? Does he have enough toys to chew on? Is he having the proper diet? My bird used to bite but I started feeding seeds like treats from my hand to bond with him, he liked the attention because I was neglecting him, now he has improved the behaviour be patient with the birds, they don't know better until we teach them. From a happy owner of 3 colorful pineapples.

@@lucasflips idk if you are still wondering about this but night frights won't kill your bird. The biggest issue is they will be flapping around and frantic, so there is the possibility of injury, but it's not very likely.

Awesome video! Yesterday I brought home a Green Cheek and do you have any tips on trust building? I keep their cage open and they either stay inside or outside when they choose so they can familiarize themselves with my presence. They can eat some food out of my hand but other than that they are pretty nippy (which is fine!). I just want to focus on building trust in the coming weeks! Will be subscribing, thank you!!
@blxck4lt
@blxck4lt 3 жыл бұрын
Let me also add that they are about 2 months old and hand raised!
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 3 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for much for subscribing! That would be a great video idea actually.. haha! I would say whilst they are in their cage, sit next to them, but don't focus on them, for example you can scroll social media, watch KZbin videos, chat on the phone - whatever you normally o so they can get used to your presence in a more passive way! You can also try target training through the cage bars and then try it outside of the cage of they are comfortable with it - my latest video shows you how to do it! One of the most important things that I think people rush through is accepting when your bird doesn't want to participate - respect when they tell you know without having to resort to biting. If they move away because they don't want to interact, that's fine! Trust will be built when they see that you aren't forcing yourself on them. Time, patience and reading body language are the key elements to bonding! (Oh and loads of yummy treats help too haha!)

@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 3 жыл бұрын
@@quack1997 Hi there! I would recommend sitting down with them and watching videos together to research on conures! Also are you fully committed to a bird which will live for 20-30 years? What about if you want to go to university or go out with friends a lot? You would need a minimum of £700 to get your bird set up properly (£250-350 for the bird or more if you want two so it can have a friend, at least £100 for a cage, and the remaining budget for lots of natural toys, perches, playstand, food and treats, first aid equipment etc). Then you'll have to consider that if your bird needs to see a vet, that will be expensive too so you'll either need a savings account or insurance! I'm not saying this to put you off, but just to highlight how expensive these birds are!

I included her in all the shenanigans of the flock but I never pushed her to be in direct contact with me Now she is such a lovebug ... she loves to give kisses Fly to me ... sing and dance on me I think it’s very important to give them the space they need and while still giving them attention and acknowledgement in all the flock affairs I respected the fact that she had no interest in being cuddly with me and just showed her love with that respect and complimenting her verbally Now ... she is my cuddly girl on her terms

Hi I just found yr Chanel! Love the information you have! Can I ask what u would recommend a budgie or conure? I had gotten budgies before (from a pet shop, I think 2 years ago) and they were untameable (I tried for 8 months and the birds just didn’t want anything to do with me). I want to try again but will definitely get directly from breeder as I don’t trust pet shops… can’t decide between a conure or budgie. I know this is kinda random question but is it common for birds to get mites / is there a way to prevent them? As if I have I bird in my room I don’t want mites!

Hi I'm looking for some advice. I'm looking to buy a green cheek conure. Should I only buy baby- hand fed conures? There's a great bird store near us that has 2 green cheeks.. They claim that they were both hand fed when they were babies but now there are 9 months old and haven't gotten much human interaction since they were hand fed. They seem real skittish and definitely won't come near my hand. Should I steer clear or take a chance?

We give ours plenty through the day, similar to your chop but obviously don't want to over feed or under feed them. (Then they have all of their foraging treats hidden around their toys too) Thanks in advance :)
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! I think it depends on what exactly you're feeding and how precise you want to be! I offer 1-2 level teaspoons of healthy seed/dry ingredients twice a day alongside roughly 2 heaped teaspoons of veggies and sprouts in the morning. There's usually some left but I don't mind! If you want to be super precise you can weight the food before and after to see how much they eat over a week and offer that much but I don't think it's wholly necessary! Do you weigh your bird(s) - that would be a better indictor of how much you are feeding!

As someone with conures, I'm constantly learning and trying to figure these sneaky birds out! I absolutely adore them, but like anyone new to birds, I'm struggling with positive reinforcement and reducing bites. I've had my 2 GCC for just over a year, got them at 7 weeks old. Often the birds will be completely normal around me, and then suddenly do a run/jump/hard bite that wasn't prompted by anything. In most cases I don't react strongly, but of course a neutral reaction isn't always possible when it hurts! They seem to do this more commonly with my girlfriend, but I can tell that they do like her to a certain extent as they'll land on her, play with hair, preen, etc, all activites I wouldn't expect if a bird was wary of someone. Do you have thoughts on unpredictable bites and how to correct this? It's tough to correct a behaviour that is only occasional, as well as always making sure that we react in the proper way. Is it common with young birds and will improve over time? They've had a ton of improvement in some areas, but also regressed in others as they push boundaries. They're currently flighted as the one bird seemed to be extra-shy and timid, and being flighted has helped, but obviously brings it's own set of issues.
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom! It’s tricky with conures as they are known to be nippy - it’s just a characteristic and not necessarily one you can train them out of! Trying your best not to react is great but I am also guilty of reacting when bites are particularly hard. You can also try putting the bird on a neutral area like the back of a chair or a play stand immediately after they bite and ignore them for a minute or so, then go back and try for a positive interaction. It’s hard to be consistent with this method but it is possible for them to understand that particularly hard bites mean that attention is removed for a short period of time. You could also try having your girlfriend do more of the feeding (placing freshly replenished snack bowls in or trays by hand) to balance out less bites. Sometimes bites are from the conures playing too rough, sometimes testing boundaries, sometimes for attention and sometimes for no obvious reason at all. Hopefully these tips and thoughts help!

My birds do have a hut, but it's woven seagrass with lots of holes so i (mistakenly?) assumed it was okay. They're also eating a high-sugar pellet (Zupreem FruitBlend) that I was already planning to change to Top's or Hari (Hagen) Alternative as the ingredients seem much better. Ideally Tops, but they love a good, solid crunch and I've heard they can be a bit crumbly. I do cover them, but I'm not sure if that's a problem, or a combination of the cover and the hut as they do seem to sleep inside it most nights, and car headlights reflecting in windows might bother them if uncovered. So, trying new food, no hut, and some patience and hopefully I'll see improvements. Some cage aggression has started recently which was never a problem before and it sounds like that could be stemming from the above things too.
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomferrier6143 yes even natural huts can trigger hormonal/territorial behaviour! Great that you are thinking of changing the pellets! Tops are more crumbly but take a peek at my latest video if you haven’t already to get an idea of what to look for in pellets! With covering, could you do just the top and sides and not the front? It will still provide some darkness but won’t be as much of an issue! Our birds aren’t bothered by the cat lights going by but for some birds it takes a little time to get used to! Best of luck with your birdies! 🦜

Like with any parrot, it's good to be calm, and feed them through the bars of the cage if possible before you interact outside of the cage. Take it slow, keep calm and read their body language! Greys can often be more nervous of new things of different situations to keep that in mine! Vine balls and cork sounds great! Maybe you can teach them some foraging skills like hiding treats in rolled up paper!
