I’ve had a couple individuals leave me poorly thought out and passive aggressive comments about this video so thought I would pin some extra info here. This is intended as an informative video on some of the downsides of living with conures, of which there are a few. There are plenty of positives as well which you can find on my conure care playlist. Conures are not the right pet for most people, so I want people to be informed about what they might be getting into. Think before you comment, there is a real person who receives and reads every comment.

You should take this video DOWN - this is awful respresentation of the Green cheek conure. This video literally begins with dont believe what you read in the factual descriptions about said bird and listen to my exaggerated negative representation of this bird! There are REAL families that own this bird and will be banned from renting an apartment or condo because when they look up creen cheek conure and see this video after they read the real facts and here they get complete contradiction!! How and what people who don’t know about this bird are supposed to believe? This silly video or countless factual descriptions on the behavior mostly experienced by real experts? I believe the real experts not this video. Take it down. Nothing personal. Save the green cheek conures HOMES and families being impacted by this video!

I got my GCC when I was in 7th grade I did so much research on everything I needed to know before actually adopting one. Of course I had a lot of obstacles to overcome owning my first bird at a young age. But as soon as I saw Ozzy we really just clicked. Ozzy has been my best friend for about 7 1/2 years now. Really the best decision I’ve ever made. He is a thriving healthy 9yr old and I’m so glad I have another 15-20 years left to share with him❤

My green-cheeked conure is 11 years old. He's not messy at all. It's a little noisy, but on the bearable way. Very intelligent, he learned easily words and phrases. He's always on my shoulder. He's one of the best things that ever happened to me. I would recommend that type of bird to anybody who is ready to have a little bird as their best friend.

This is a fantastic video. I've had birds for almost my entire life and made the decision to get a green cheek conure after researching what they were like. After we got our first GCC, we quickly realized a lot of the stuff on the internet is wrong about conures, and what you've said here is exactly what we've found out to be true as well! Like you said, a lot of people say GCC's are quiet, this is a downright dirty lie! They're also definitely not a beginner bird, they're intermediate at the very least because like you said, of the time commitment they need. I LOVE GCC's (as you know I have three now!), they're easily my favorite animal as they make the best companions, but that's partly because I can take care of them now. In my mid thirties I've more or less settled down and don't have the desire to always head out of the house. As a teenager or in my twenties they would have absolutely have been the wrong type of bird for me! Fantastic companions, but definitely one for when you have some stability in your life already.

How wonderful for you! What made you decide to get a second conure instead of just keeping the one? How have they been getting along together, and has the dynamic between you two changed since the other conure came around? I've heard of all sorts of experiences, and am considering only having one conure or perhaps one with a budgerigar myself someday, and would love to hear about yours!

My babygrrrl came with her quirks, she had many staff at her location enterprise scared. I visited her for 6 months before I followed through with my original promise to her. When I took her home I was saddened to hear that she had been there for over 2 years. They had placed her with another baby early on, come spring time, her mating behavior was in full swing, and her mate was purchased, she was left due to her aggression. Her bff include, a female cockatoo, from the same place so they knew eachother from the shop. My daughter and she loves me more than anything I've ever known. She is my velcro bird, and my tiel is her velcro bird. They are like yin and yang, they are fully flighted, they cuddle together at night, and my conure understands every thing I say. She has full conversations, its almost like she speaks English with a thick Par-rot accent, she blows my mind she is absolutely brilliant, I mean the sound s that she makes in response to any random statement I say fit perfectly with what an appropriate response of an English speaking human, but her favorite thing to say in her little frog voice is "hey baby". I didn't really know what I was getting myself into, but I would not trade her for anything in the world. If the trade happened to be money, I would make sure I could buy her right back in the same transaction, I would be lost with out my girls.

I started researching getting a Conure about a week ago. I think they're so pretty and as soon as I saw a video with one I wanted to run out and buy. I'm telling you the backstory to make sure that you know how helpful this video is. I'm still not sure whether or not I'm going to get one (honestly I've been trying to talk myself out of it but that's not working very well, lol). You're video has helped both because of the information AND because it has led me to research things more thoroughly before taking the plunge. I still don't know what I'm going to do, but the information you have provided in this video has been invaluable when it comes to having the facts to make the right decision. TL;DR the haters can kick rocks.

We have 4 green-cheek conures and we absolutely love them, yes they bite a lot but as you well explained they are exploring, not trying to hurt us......I love how every time I approach the cage they leave what they are doing and come up to greet me 🥰 In the same cage we have 2 cockatiels, 3 canaries and a strawberry finch 😅 So diverse, right? Thanks God they get along well and they "respect" each other and behave well. Anyway, I love your videos and your conures are so cute and adorable. Definitely checking more of your videos on conure care. Greetings from Egypt 😊

I have a Quaker and a Sun who are 19 years old now. My Sun has definitely more challenging. Conures have a bigger and stronger beak for their size and their bites hurt a lot. She’s also more destructive and can agree a piece of wood like paper. She also has a loud voice too and it gets loud when she sees the vacuum coming. Thankfully she is not constantly noisy.

Great video describing the level of investment you need to care for a Conure. I have a Sun Conure and pretty much the same in terms of needing time and attention and care. Yes, they are loud, noisy and need a lot of care and attention. Sophie nailed all the important aspects of what you need to consider. I love my Conure and am willing to put in the investment in because having him as my companion is a blessing. It is not always easy or fun yet they do give lots of love back.

I always recommend a potential parrot owner takes a trip to a rescue aviary. Just to get a real grasp about the noise levels these birds can put out. You will NOT get that from most pet stores (such as PetCo and PetSmart) because they put all their birds behind sound proof glass!!! I didn't think Buddy was ever going to get along with Holly when I got her. It has been 2 years. I have just recently witnessed Buddy preening Holly's crest :D He has made some aggressive attempts in the past, but now he is being very gentle and the preening lasts longer. I guess some relationships just take more time!

I guess I got lucky. The green cheek that I purchased earlier this year is generally quieter than either my budgie or my lineolated parakeet. He is also very gentle with his beak and actually preens the smaller birds. (I supervise him, of course.) He is very affectionate and intelligent. I agree with your other comments about mess/poops, expense, sociability and life span/commitment. I find that conures need lots of mental stimulation or they will go exploring on their own and get into trouble. 😄

No, each bird has its own large cage with door. I think it is important to give birds some out of cage time every day. My problem is that I can’t allow the birds to be out of cage in the bird room together due to my conure attacking or playing too roughly with the others.

My bonded sun conure and white ear conure are 19 years old. I also have a rescue Hahn's mini macaw, whose previous owner went into a nursing home. It is important to have plans for who will take them should you no longer be able to keep them. My conures are free-flight and live in an aviary I built in the front half of my family room. I had hoped to introduce my Hahn's to the aviary, but he and the sun were not in agreement to that, so the Hahn's is in a bedroom. As to sound, you can hear my birds quite a ways down the street. I don't mind it, but several neighbors have commented on it. The conures love to chew, including door frames and drywall. There have been a few home repairs needed over the years.

I had a green conure. Stanley I loved him so much. He loved to cuddle he would sometimes break out of his cage & then would walk over to the couch where he knew we would always sit & cuddle with him. My son while in High School cuddled with him then got sleepy. He put him up on top the cage on his little bird gym where he spent many days & he walked into his bedroom & went to bed. Stanley after a bit climbed down walked into my sons room & climbed up into his bed to cuddle & sleep with him. My son a sound sleeper had no clue he had done that. He never did it before. You may guess the sad next part. My son rolled over on Stanley & Stanley was gone. He was mortified when he woke up & found him. Stanley always only walked to the sofa waiting for us & looking out the window. I tried to comfort my son bcz he blamed himself for not locking him up & altho that is true what good would it do to make him feel worse then he already did. Lesson learned. We all loved him so much. We miss him terribly but I have not gotten another. It was heartbreaking losing him. He was so wonderful & very sweet. Very loving & always wanted to be near us not in his cage at all. I know I’ll get many nasty comments about my son but he never dreamed Stanley would do that we had him for years & never once had he done anything like that. I never would have left him on top his cage unattended but my son saw him up there so often ( of course I was home always) this time I wasn’t & Stan just wanted to follow him. I put this up as a word of caution so no one else goes thru this heartbreak bcz Conures love to cuddle. Be very careful & make sure everyone in your house knows no being out of the unlocked cage if you are not awake & watching them. ( altho he was an escape artist at times )

We measured 75 dBa(from 5 feet away, no barriers) on our 2 conures while in our care. Yes loud. I'm not sure I heard the video claim correctly but they are below Jet Engine status. Hearing damage can occur if prolonged exposure (I think over 5min of continuous 75dBa nonstop). Ours were decent biters. Our female, Diamond, loved to aggressively assault toes. Literally fly or run up to them and full blown body slam and attack. Sinnamon, the male, talked to us in mimicking speech and was territorial of the liquor cabinet.

A conure is a perfect compromise bird for me since they're hypoallergenic (I have asthma and allergies to cats & dogs) and not quite as loud as other parrots. Might a conure decide on a whim to screech in mine immediate vicinity, or become spooked by a cloud outside and bless me with its ear-shattering warning calls? Perhaps, but 'tis a sacrifice I, like a fool blinded by love, am willing to make! But at the end of the day, isn't such an illogical sacrifice what makes us human? It's always good to get deals for birds. Places vary on costs and different conure types and breeding can cost $375, well over $1k, or in the thousands even at a cheaper, yet responsible pet store (I went to one just like this recently). Additionally, food and toys need to be replaced and vet bills can definitely get expensive. Air filters and other supplies that are recommended for keeping them safe and healthy can also be costly. It really depends on the effort that's put in, good deals and savings, emergencies and check-ups, and general upkeep. It adds up!! Luckily, I don't plan to move out soon nor want children, and I cannot have a cat or dog as I'm an asthmatic. But conures are hypoallergenic and not nearly as expensive as a child nor a dog (usually), so all-in-all it's a great _deal_ for me! 😍

Thank you for this information. I wish I had seen this a couple of years ago before I bought my conure. I've had him about 2.5 years now, and it started out great -until I brought a second one home a few months later. My first one seemed to be jealous and never got over it. I was only rescuing the second one and sold him to a coworker four months later, but my first one has still not gotten over it. He always bites me (didn't before that), and I'm afraid we no longer trust each other. I don't know what to do. I've watched videos, but it doesn't work for me. How can I learn to bond with him again and us trust each other again? I really don't want to rehome him, but I don't enjoy him anymore, and half the time, I barely even like him! This is my first larger parrot.

Go in with realistic expectations and put in the work, time and research on how to properly care for these birds. I had a jenday conure for many years. I still miss her. She certainly was loud, and bossy, and possessive, and playful, and an utter delight. Every parrot behavior/training resource I read had the same caveat: "this won't work with conures!" The biggest thing to know about them is that they have very high social needs and want to be included in everything. They can't stand being left out! If your conure is constantly shrieking, the only thing that calms them down is to pay more attention to them. Jekyll fiercely defended me from my husband for nearly ten years (she was there first, so ...). He couldn't get within arm's reach. lol Unfortunately, I did have to rehome her with a friend when I was pregnant with my first child; I was ill and couldn't give her enough attention, and she was terribly jealous after the baby arrived. She would fly across the room to bite my goddaughter, and we knew it would be worse when the baby started toddling around the house. I don't regret the wonderful years I had with her, but I could have timed things better to avoid the heartbreak of giving her up.

not done watching video but so far i had a sun conure(got him at pet store when i was 12) he would have been 25 in 2019) he passed away. miss him but right on the dot. he was very jealous bird. he stopped liking my sister when she had her son in 2019 he didn't like strangers. we had to keep him in cage when the baby was at grandma's(my mom) baby was so curious about Peanut but well not so well so sad. one family birtd as well from 1994 on it was just parents,sis and i. one time and i told him to cope harder, an ex boyfriend of mine stuck his finger in the cage and got bit like 10 times after telling him the bird isn't friendly don't do that. i secretly cheered on my bird and told my then boyfriend well don't yell at my bird. you were warned. maybe he didn't think i was serious. very nippy. four of us fam would get nipped from time to time. it would hurt but our dog's nips hurt worse. our Peanut was about 10 weeks old when we got him. cutest lil birdy. he loved shelled peanuts and would go grab out of dish and drag right to water dish. yes they also do poop everywhere a lot. it would spray. he even pooped in his food dish. he was scared and angry if in same room as we girls like when brushing our hair and or using the hair dryer. but he loved climbing on bar inside our sliding door tub when we would be in shower he sit and "talk" to us. wow that many deicbles on how loud they are. i believe it. i could be down the street at friend's house and could hear him sqwak with windows shut. he was such a good boy when i was in my 20's to 30's,when times esp in summer i would house sit for my parents obviously pet sit too. had leave him in cage but i would open door to play with him like 15 times a day. miss bird and dog. if i ever get a bird i was def thinking of going with a cocatiel. my friend had one until the bird died. he was nice bird but cage territorial he loved to whistle and i never could do that but somehow i was able to start whistling with him. i know birds need lot of attention i am a clingy person to animals. he was so pretty with lots of gray feathers. pets are family in my fam.

This video was so negative! I’m a real bird lover and did a lot of reading. I didn’t think I was going to have anything like my Quaker parakeet! I could cry that I spent so much money and you tell me this! I’m trying to reassure myself, by thinking the children are a lot of work, messy and loud, but I wouldn’t trade either one for anything! I have found out that if your main lecture was going to be all the above, perhaps you could start out with their positive points, then maybe talk of some negative points! The woman I got him from owns 12 birds, plus the store. She steered me away from quite a few birds in the store, but loved the conur’s, she did tell me everything you did, put told me how to keep him busy! I hope I love him, he is so sweet right now. He is still being hand feed, so I won’t get him for 3-4 weeks. I go to the store every day and play with him. The bird I really wanted was a Ringneck, but she and another worker thought this was a way better choice. I hope so!

The video is intended to show the reality of living with parrots - they’re messy, loud and difficult to live with which many people don’t realise. If you watch more than one of my videos, you’ll see I cover plenty of the positives. Parrots are the number one most rehomed type of pet in the world, so if I can stop just one parrot going to an unsuitable home then the video has done its job. I’m not sure why you’ve left me such a defensive comment when the video isn’t an attack?
@MultiRogerg
@MultiRogerg 9 ай бұрын
I personally do not believe that this is a complete video on conure birds. I would never tell someone reasons to not get a certain pet. I would tell them all of the pros and cons about these certain pets. I’ve had many different types of birds my entire life (budgies, cockatiels, a cockatoo, blue and gold macaw, blue crowned conure, etc….). And I also worked with rescue parrots. You should explain the pros and cons of owning a parrot instead of just the cons, then let other people make the decision for themselves.
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 9 ай бұрын
Have you actually looked at any videos on my channel? I have an extensive collection of videos on conure care and why I love my conures. Conures are not the right pet for everyone - all of mine have had multiple homes before coming to me and I would rather people didn’t get them in the first place if they aren’t the right pet for them. Think before you comment.
@MultiRogerg
@MultiRogerg 9 ай бұрын
@@BirdNerdSophieI agree that not all birds are meant for everyone. But instead of just making a video about why you shouldn’t get one, or just making a video on why you should get one, why not make a complete video about the pros and cons about owning some of these birds. Some people might make the wrong decision because they only saw one of your videos, and don’t have the time to browse the internet to find all of your videos.
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 9 ай бұрын
@@MultiRogerg if people are making their pet choice based on one video then they clearly haven’t done enough research into whether a pet is right for them. I have many videos on the pros and cons of having a conure as a pet. I have 268 videos on here and this is just one of them.

@@MultiRogerg as I’ve already mentioned. People should not base the suitability of a pet on one video, if they do then they haven’t done enough research. People need to be aware of the challenges and drawbacks of living with parrots because they are an incredibly demanding and life changing pet. Being aware of the ‘reasons not to get one’ doesn’t mean that someone isn’t a suitable home. That said, many people are unable to cope with a long lived, loud and messy pet. They need to be aware that this is what they would be getting in to. If someone hasn’t got time to search through my videos or that of any other channel’s videos, they certainly haven’t got time to look after a parrot.
