Brilliant ride by Jerry Lambert on Convenience. He moved over in from of Shoemaker and forced him to go inside of him or around him. Loved Harry Henson with that true racetrack announcers voice.

I was there! And it was the most exciting race I have ever seen! Jerry Lambert gave Convenience a masterful ride to hold off Bill Shoemaker on Typecast. Hollywood Park was jammed, and the crowd started to cheer when the 2 fillies walked onto the track and kept it up for 10 minutes until the gates opened and it became a deafening roar. You had to be there in person to appreciate it.

Terrific race when Hollywood Park was the Track of the Lakes and Flowers. I listened to it live on the radio (KNX maybe) and the race lived up to the pre-race hype. I want to say Fletcher Jones was the owner of Typecast, who lobbied for the race. Each owner put up $100K and the track put up another $50K when a $100K purse was still a big event. Thanks for posting this video.

Thanks for this great clip. Jerry Lambert outrode Shoe here. Lambert was an excellent judge of pace and IMO,a very underrated jockey. He handled the great Native Diver perfectly.

I saw Jerry ride most of Native Diver's great races. All three Hollywood Gold Cups. Jerry could horseback with the best of them.. And the announcer, Harry Henson.. One of the greats..

Does anyone have the Chris Evert Miss Musket match race? Remember that one? Chris Evert won by 50 and she wasn't the favorite!

love the gravel voice of harry- he called the race like a drunken sailor, but what he hell, it's the element. he kept saying" drawing out"-as if the race was over. drawing out should only be used in deep stretch when the race is predictably over. secretariat drew out.

Right, criticize Harry Henson, one of the outstanding race callers of all time. You can do better? And what is with the "drunken sailor" put down? You sound like a miserable cuss.

"Drawing out" was a perfectly appropriate description as Convenience increased her lead. Harry Henson was one of the best racecallers (so. Cal was very fortunate in regards to having Hernandez, Henson and Trevor Denman). Harry had a race to announce and could not look into a crystal ball to see if Convenience would win by 10 lengths. But of course you know 40 or so years later how the race should have been called.
