I think we as workers need to understand the power we have. Workers produce the goods, build the houses, build the roads, transport the goods, heal the sick, repair what's broken, provide the services, work out the balance sheets, fight the wars, manage, clean and protect society. We provide the dual roles in the economy of worker and taxpayer, producer and consumer, service provider and service user. We are collateral, taxpayers, cannon fodder and consumers. Why should we live in poverty while the Tories siphon our taxes and provide little use to society? We are tied to debt, mortgages, jobs, car finance agreements, bills, looking after our children etc and these things make us unwilling to take real action such as national strikes. But in reality, we allow these short-term problems to rob the next generation of even more freedoms and opportunities. Thanks for the video Gary, I think it's important to expose the big picture to as many people as possible.

@@ai-d2121 Essentially 90-99% of us dependant on how high up the pyramid you go. The top 1% have the majority of resources and power, possibly refine that to the top 1% of the top 1%. The higher up the pyramid we go the more power and wealth are in the hands of a tiny organic group of people with varying views and interests who look after their own self-interests through mutual cooperation and control.

So what policies would work to rebalance society slogans such as TAX THE RICH will be used to turn the aspirational or deferential people against there own interests by controlled media. There is a moral stupidity in British society incapsulated as Stiff Upper Lip / I know my place/ Keep calm and carry on with personal slavery. People can agitate and join various forums but how do we force the powerful to understand that it is in their own interest to rebalance society in a more equitable way . BY DESTROYIING the purchasing power of the working and middle classes whole sections of the economy will collapse ie. Services, cafes Corner shops,restaurants, takeaways taxis,small builders etc. Because it is the workers who spend money not the asset owning class. The way to rebalance is to tax assets, property share dividends ,commodity hoarders, city bonuses and introduce basic income for all.

@@davidbishopbishop4664 Agreed on many points. Some options include an ideological shift through education and agitation, strikes don't need to be damaging, they just have to be used effectively, enforcing criminal proceedings against corrupt MPs, marching, unity and if necessary uprising, enforcing plurality of the media. Then we tax wealth, the investor class, inherited wealth, close tax loopholes, and renationalise industries such as energy, communications, transport etc. As I said things will only get worse we have little to lose in the long run. We are heading for a dystopian corporatocracy. The longer we wait the harder it gets and the more legislation is put in place to block us.

yeah I am an engineer and my economics education was a single class in college as one of my humanities options. I thought it was so much garbage I never wanted to deal with it again. *BUT (and to your point) I HAD TO ACCEPT WE ALL NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW IT WORKS* otherwise the top 1% will *CONTINUE* to run over the top of us. As an engineer I simply go tired of them beating me over the head and interfering in projects. So I started looking for people who could explain this stuff. I only discovered Gary recently and he's one of the brightest lights we have right now. One of the other very bright lights is Mark Blyth (the Scot) who's at Brown U. in America.

@bina nocht Remember in college almost everything is divided into 2 groups at the undergrad/bachelor level. Arts and Science. My degree is actually a BSc in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. For all the non science people its a Bachelor of Arts in Economics or a Bachelor of Arts in Music or History or something else. Some colleges do issue Bachelors of Engineering or Bachelor of "something specific" but mine didn't. So as an engineer they tell us we have to do X number of credits/hours/classes/courses in "humanities" and that means anything NOT taught by the engineering and science colleges/departments. I did classes in Economics, Psychology, 2 in Sociology, 3 in Classical Civilisations and 1 in Scuba (a PE class) and 1 in Nautical Navigation. Because all were NOT taught by a science or engineering department they all fall under the "humanities" tag.

Hi Gary, Melanie from Boston, Lincs here (went to primary skool in Plaistow). I ended up here in rural England becos I was a single-Mom and wanted to buy a detached house with a bit a of land in 2006. I could not get this in my last town of Brentwood, Essex. I am also a Bi-racial of White/ Asian. This struggle goes beyond Economics Gary and it more so a battle of good Vs evil. It is ultimately all abt MIND CONTROL. As U said is a humble manner, we each need to do our small part. Up here in Lincs, I put my only child thru Grammar skool and empathized to him that education and good grades is a passport out of our depravity up here in these poor towns. He flourished in Sciences and got offered a place at King's College but did not think it wud suit him (not enuff blacks n Asians haha) so opted for his 2nd choice Queen Mary which U know is in Mile End. He thrives there and rents in Whitechapel. We need to talk to the young ppl and offer them an alternative way out. Until we change the people at the top (MD's, Politicians, Doctors, Economists, etc) we will not lead by example. My Son wud like to work in big Pharma and work his way up to the top. He may remember my teaching him, that people have health issues due to stress, low incomes, unreasonable working conditions, etc. Lets get out to the University students and attend freshers weeks, etc. THANK YOU GARY.

Another great video Gary. I am hooked on your channel. I live in France and, as you say, the situation is global. Everything you say applies here as it does everywhere on this planet of ours. I have worked in a few different countries over the years as a language trainer and have been lucky enough to meet people from all walks of life from employees right up to CEOs in a wide variety of sectors. The key is educating and informing people of the realities of what is going on. The mainstream media doesn't do this, so it is up to all of us to try to spread the word to friends and family, some of whom may be reticent, due to engrained prejudices and pre-conceived ideas. The rich and powerful have had centuries of practice in 'divide and rule', deflection and laying the blame for all ills on convenient scapegoats, i.e. immigrants and benefit scroungers. It's an uphill struggle my friend.

Gary, I really appreciate your videos and your views on economics, and that you are trying to educate people on these issues. I would love to be able to send links to certain friends and family, but your presentation is very 'one note'. Simply talking, which is fine for people like me who are interested in economics, but the voters who really need to know that they are being lied to about inequality won't sit for it. My advice would be if you are trying to get the message out as wide as possible you need to consider using visual aids to explain concepts. Have you watched the tdlr videos? Note how they use visuals in order to explain things. I really think your message needs to get out as wide as possible, if you step up presentation it will reach more people.

Great conversation Gary. I have no faith at all in government. With lobbying allowed money will prevail in making decisions. With politicians in many cases coming from wealthy backgrounds, money will prevail. The thing I struggle with is that my personal solution is to simply make more money. With all this talk and no clear effective way to make actionable change, earning more is my only personal solution. Many in the working class I have tried to educate via media, books convos etc seem not to have the capacity to even care to educate themselves about finance which is unfortunate. If you cannot want to learn the basics of money, which demands the most time in your adult life, how can you even fathom wealth equality effectively. This whole thing needs more than just a labour vote. Ironically that seems to be the solution for many and many do not even belive in Kier Starmers Conviction should he be PM.

@Gary'seconomics I wanted to share why I watch the channel. I fundamentally feel the worthiness of all human beings, irrespective of how skilled they are at participating with current economic system or not. All people deserve to be treated with dignity and care. This includes meeting people's material needs if for whatever reason they cannot provide for themselves. I think humanity is technically advanced enough to meet the material needs of the population of the planet. This is if we outgrow scarcity and material hoarding mindset. So much of man made human suffering can be eliminated if people came before profit. I see how grotesque wealthy can destroy societies and human potential. Current economic system is restricting human potential and destroying habitats of future generations. Wealth inequality is always the unspoken and misunderstood elephant in the room. So much of human conflicts is wrapped up in Wealth inequality. I watch the channel, because I want to be part of a positive change that addressed this Enormous Unspoken Elephant in The Room.

Thank you, I saw you talking on another channel. You are pretty awesome. I’m glad I found your channel. It’s practically unheard of people with wealth, sharing their knowledge, let alone understanding what it’s like to be an ordinary person living on this planet. Here is a funny thing, I googled the definition of a middle class person in the USA in the 1970’s. The example was a taxi driver marred to a home maker with 3-4 kids. Then I googled what class a married couple, each with a bachelors degree were in 2020 the answer was lower middle class. LoL. I though I was I was middle class. But todays world, two people with a degree from university are lower middle class. We have fallen below the 1970’s Taxi driver and we don’t even have kids. Not that it matters to me, but I thought it was funny, but it was a bit cruel, like little snarky bite from a cat.

Just discovered your channel after watching another interview with you. Follow a lot of your views etc a lot of your thinking is spot on However on something's i think you need a paradigm shift. For example on your thoughts on property ownership. If we took you and transported you to berlin your argument that we should all aspire to own property for wealth wouldnt stand up. Property ownership is at the root of the problem in the UK thats where people are being leveraged. Ive personally witnessed how co-operative owned housing can eliminate the housing trap and ive became quite convinced of it as a solution. When i was in my early 20s, 20 years ago i went to Bulgaria thinking about buying property, i quicky changed my mind because the numbers didn't stack up.. you could buy 4 apartments in berlin for the price of one in sofia.. and people in berlin were making 8 times more than Bulgarians on average.. Why was this, because the rich as you talked about were buying up the asset's because it was attractive to do so and to speculate in that market where in berlin with the rent controls (at that time) made it unattractive You are not being quite radical enough in your approach and thinking in my view. One thing traveling taught me is that social equality is directly linked with corruption and if you compare uk to places like Norway or Iceland what stands out is the centuries of established corruption and systematic tax avoidance by those who running the country You are right we are on the road to feudalism... Im not sure it ever really went away here.

It's an international fight to be fought in every country because it is a globalisation issue. Here in Australia the open economy is a gift to the billionaires first and foremost as it is everywhere. Prior to WW2 you had the great depression that resulted in the disenfranchised poor working class following fascism to greater disaster. The wealthy didn't suffer at all but the average person certainly did and we seem to be sleep walking into the same situation.

I understand and totally agree with you but you need to get the book written since the videos continue to ramble, mentioning the same things. Please analyse as a good Economist would using detailed empirical evidence and provide actionable solutions. This is the way you will get taken more seriously by those in power. I wish you luck.

Hi Gary, it would be great if you could explain to your viewers the concept of the magic money tree. Positive Money explains this brilliantly, which opened my eyes (along with your videos) to how the economy really works. Definitely a message which needs to be more widely known so the media/politicians are challenged when they say "there's no magic money tree'.

Do things cycle? Great question.
@JAI_8
@JAI_8 3 ай бұрын
There is no natural systemic tendency for cyclic behavior. Thomas Piketty shows this convincingly in his “Capital in the Twenty-First Century”. His thesis is that currently the rising global wealth inequality shows no sign of any current systemic trend to slow or reverse, and thus capitalism will naturally lead to an extreme state of wealth concentration, labor that serves the rich and massive numbers of people living in poverty. Any change to these trends will only come about through policy changes. Massive wealth redistribution occurs due to revolutionary activity, or war. War also causes asset destruction (and rebuilding which tends to have a redistributive effect … as after WWII) and a loss of a large portion of the working class, which raises the value of labor too due to increased scarcity of workers. Natural disaster or man made disaster can also impact the value of labor by creating similar scarcity. It’s clear the best option is policy change aimed at wealth redistribution to recreate a healthy middle class once again, which seems to be Gary’s message here.

Inequality is creating food banks. Inequality is making our children hungry. Inequality is making our bills unaffordable. Inequality is making our housing unaffordable. Inequality is a choice made by previous governments and the super rich. Which WE CAN CHANGE.

Great conversation, the issue I have is the political model in the UK, currently with our 2 party politics, both parties are really owned by the rich, because the political model is set up a party and get money from the rich to run your party. The money comes with ties, those ties will benefit the rich that fund the party. You can see that through the Labour Party, they no longer represent the working class, people just think that they do, but their policies do not. So I get demanding change, I believe that together we have power, but today no party exists that is demanding change, just tweaks. That’s what needs to change, so the only chance we have is someone who becomes a billionaire, that has a conscious and spends their own money to change politics, but I honest don’t think that person exists because to be a billionaire you have to be a mean selfish individual in order to become one, that’s why we end up going down the drain, war civil or global to get out the other side and change things.

There was a geopolitical as well as a multi-generational class politics dimension to what was achieved at the end of WW2. Fascism had just been defeated, which took fascism off the table for rich people as a way to manage and stamp on working class demands for redistribution. Fascism had been defeated largely thanks to the USSR and its capacity for industrial dynamism as well as ideologically committed armed resistance to fascism. So there's two geopolitical contingencies affecting what was possible after 1945 which don't exist at this moment. The other thing is the multi-generational build-up of the working class across the industrial world as a political movement. It took from the 1870s to build that working class movement, in all the unions, the leftist political parties, pro-labour newspapers, sunday schools, evening classes, social societies, colliery brass bands, working men's clubs, union football teams and a plethora of other community and political organisations to build up that solidarity and that consciousness and that ability to present a set of demands with tens of millions of people backing them, prepared to go on strike, take to the streets, and vote as a bloc. Churches and synagogues played an important role too, because of the anti-inequality messages in scripture and traditions in the faith communities that had contributed to the building of the unions and the Labour party. That multi-generational process was international too, having different amounts of success or defeat in every country, culminating in the Russian Revolution and the rise of fascism to combat the working class movement in other European countries and in the USA in the form of the KKK and Hoover's FBI. Things don't just happen because an idea is correct, or even just because it is both correct and popular. There's a class struggle that has to happen because we live in a class society where one class rules in its own benefit at the cost of everyone else, and they aren't going to give up that power or the rewards they get from that power, without a fight.

Left to themselves, like cattle turned loose upon the plains of Argentina, they had reverted to a style of life that appeared to be natural to them, a sort of ancestral pattern...Heavy physical work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult."
