The Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) is honored to host a discussion with Thich Nhat Hanh about his life experiences and the role compassion has played.
Thich Nhat Hanh is an internationally renowned Zen master, prolific author, and teacher on the subjects of peace, mindfulness, and meditation. He became a monk at the age of sixteen and went on to help found the "engaged Buddhism" movement. His life's work has been dedicated to "inner transformation for the benefit of individuals and society" and he was nominated by Nobel Laureate Martin Luther King, Jr. for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967.

it is sad to see the number of viewers just less than 200k for 8years while any hot clip on the internet can get 200k views in just a couple of days. I feel that we live in a very speedy world and forget many fundamental values.

Compassion combined with conscious awareness is immensely transformative not only in society but in the mind itself. Mindfulness therapy teaches you how to direct mindfulness toward your emotional pain, anxiety or depression. This approach heals.

i've been watching him since 10pm. it is now 4:40am... a few weeks ago, a customer came to test drive my car, and suggested i google him, but i didn't bother doing it, amely because i've become an atheist recently; i was a catholic, and was trying to stay away from all religions. but tonight, i was watching some yoga and saw his name and clicked on it. i'm glad i did

There are good lessons in all religions. Don't get wrapped up in atheism.. I always say that theism is a delusion of believing what you can't prove but atheism is a delusion of disbelieving what you can't disprove.. the only intellectual religious choices are agnostic and gnostic. And agnostic is the ignorant beginner and gnostic is the learned master of experience. Everyone who isn't sure about god should be agnostic. There's nothing wrong with that. You should not believe what you don't know and you should ask challenging questions. It takes a lot of questions to become gnostic. Don't be afraid to ask them. But that's not to say you shouldn't be cautious of the fact that most people are psuedo religious nutbags and maybe you shouldn't ask them. Ask yourself. And try to come up with the answers.

This video may be posted almost over two years ago but it has really changed my life...I was able to adjust my perspective in life and try my best to apply compassion to every thought and action in my daily life and I was able to reconcile and strengthen the relations with my loved ones which I could not fathom to do because I lacked the confidence. Thank you so much Thay. Buddhism is indeed more than a religion but a way of life. I definitely urge others to give Buddhist teachings a try because it is possible to inevitably end your suffering.

I love his courage to say that many would not dare to say (even myself) Ego, pride can easily stand like a wall between true loving speech 42:00. So strong and loving to say that brings healing, joy and happiness :) We often see our self as victim which is not true. Also very hard to have the courage if you suffer a lot which manifest as ego and pride. Instead of right speech. Thich Nhat Hanh never stops to impress me, he really worked with his suffering to overcome it more and more. I need to go back to practice. Or else i fall back to suffer more because distractions around me. Compassionate meditation is great to transform your suffering to happiness your suffering will transform you to be. I also love how he says that without suffering there is no happiness cuz without suffering there is no happiness . It's very true, we tend to wanna be happy all the time but in reality we do suffer some which is good to face with compassion or else that suffering may grow stronger in us

It seems like many people have problems with being compassionate to their enemies and even after a beautiful explanation still have difficulty understanding. I understand this concept and so I'll offer the most simple explanation. It's because you want your enemies to get better. Not to destroy them.

As answer to the question: "How can we make compassion more attractive to men?" easy... as an alternative to empathy and a fantastic strength. Then when you get to an injured person who is bleeding and being anxious that they are going to die, you can keep completely calm, call the ambulance, take care of the wound. All without that emotional empathy that could in fact overwhelm you and make you feel the pain that they are feeling and perhaps even throw up. That would be bad. Compassion is better because it is impersonal and always a positive emotion. So it can allow you to look at the gruesome wound and only think about how you can best take care of it until the ambulance arrives. You can keep the calm which will also keep the other person calmer and you can stay practical instead of wallowing in emotion. If anything, that should be very attractive way of being for men.

Thank you, great video. What purpose does suffering serve? The Holy Bible answers some of the purposes for suffering: * Suffering equips us to comfort others = Compassion (2 Corinthians 1:3-5) * Suffering leads us to the deep questions within us and to the True God (Job 42:5) * Suffering refines us (As silver is refined in the furnace) Isaiah 48:10 * Suffering produces growth and maturity (James 1:2-4) * Suffering conforms us into God's image (Romans 8:28-29) * Suffering Produces Perseverance (Romans 5:3-4)

People are like situations and by practicing mindfulness you can develop the skill to transcend any situation by seeing it for what it is.. that way your compassion is sincere and no out of a sense of duty.. Nothing can disturb your consciousness unless you allow it to do so..

Yeah I tried that and got the door slammed in my face. Well actually the door never even opened. Some people just need to come back again and again and again....
@TheDiceMan6
@TheDiceMan6 9 жыл бұрын
Dana Heinrich..what did you try - to transcend the situation? or to have sincere compassion for the other person?.. Transcending a situation is to see the other persons ulterior motives (they just want to be happy and do not want to suffer) and by knowing the real intention behind any action you can 'take the edge off' of any situation. If you remember the children's story, the lion was only loud and angry because he had a torn in his paw and it took the humble mouse to realize this...use your powers of Insight - it is why nature gave us these powers, to be used correctly... I hope this helps..

TheDiceMan6 The person in question is a narcissist (that is a personality disorder that you can read about if not familiar). He is a parent who neglected and criticized me all of my life. At 51 years of age I drew a boundary and said no more criticism. My values are not the same as yours and they are good values (he is very materialistic. I am not). I was immediately cut off because he could no longer use me as a narcissistic extension of himself. We did not speak for a year. During that time I developed compassion for the little boy who was somehow made to become a malignant narcissist as an adult. I did all of the things Thay recommends. Spent a long time writing a selfless compassionate letter. Tried to get together many times for a dialogue. Sent a gift. He is a hard case Diceman and I guess we have some Karma to work out
@andre1onate

Only if a man is strong enough can he really display and practice compassion. Other wise he'll be like a gremlin mooching off people where ever he can. When a man begins to practice that compassion, his presence will show it. When you get beyond the baloney of society, then you begin to see what type of people are just by their presence. It does take higher understanding to get to these points. So any man who wants to truly be strong & successful will know that wisdom is the strongest form of intelligence, and wisdom is usually a form of patient and compassionate intelligence.

Compassion is an English understanding term to feel for . This compassion was not to a level of what Buddhism mean " the greater kind " ,"慈悲"," metta jhana " . Its too shallow . " The Wisdom of Compassion " . Only this kind of level of understanding for compassion , One can surpass self overthrow the 7th sense "thoughts" into the 8th sense of Buddha .The reason very simple . Those words used in sutra only meant to communicate with human but when human try to understand the meaning of each word ? He/she will be trapped with his/her own kind of understanings . There is only one teaching , one path , need to understand in full as there is no other kind of Buddha out here.

It's a habit nurtured by a sick society. Example is how children learn. It's also how adults learn. We are, after all, only old children. Each of us can embody Thay's teachings and, by example, help on or two others. If this practice is carried out through a lifetime, happiness will increase and suffering wane.

I would rather say that mindfulness enables us to stop using our brain (thinking), instead of changing our brain. So, stopping mind, or thinking is equal to revive awareness (awakened consciousness) by stopping using our brain for calm and clear mind.
