Doc needs to add a 110 outlet to the pump house which only has 220 line. After much research he called his electrician to add a transformer box.

I'm guessing here (I'm no electrician....just a handyman), but considering the minimal difference in cost, I think as a general rule you should always run three wire with a ground to all outbuildings. That way you have 110/220 options down stream w/o having to resort to transformers.

Your transformer is the source of the 110 V and specked to supply max current based on the size of the transformer. The more current you require the bigger more expensive the transformer.

Thank gosh you didnt tell people to use the ground as a neutral. Pretty brainless installing a 2 wire 220 instead of three when it was originally installed.

BTW I'm electronic engineer so I understand meeting code and doing things right. I have wired houses, garages, industrial etc.
