Great video! I also make my own 8x57 cases. For one reason or another, I choose to make my cases from .270 Win cases. I follow pretty much the same process as you. I do not own a .270, but I do own a .30-06. I make a bunch of 8mm brass this way a couple times a year and it works great. I really like how you emphasize safety at all times!Thanks again!!

RCBS makes an 8x57 file trim die where you push the .30-06 case in the excess sticks out the top of the die and you cut it off with a hack saw and boom it pushes the shoulder back and you have an 8x57 case ready to be annealed.

I was lucky about 4 or 5 yeara ago in my college days. Had disposable income from my GI bill, a job that paid the bills, and a local gun shop that sold 8MM Mauser ammo from PPU & S&B for fifty cents a round. I still have close to 500 rounds of brass that have been fired once and can be reloaded

Only concern I have about this is the neck size you end up with. I have a 25/08 [25 cal .308Win case]. I have a selection of brass including Sniper grade IVI and Lapua. I worked up loads from 87gn to 117 gn projectiles. The projectiles under 105gn were all loaded in the IVI brass but the 117gn was loaded in Lapua brass. When firing the 117gn I got serious over-pressure issues with primer pocket, escaping gas etc. I went all over my process many times, measured and checked everything many times and still could not find the issue. Finally, I took some micrometre measurements of the neck external and internal dimensions. What I found was the Lapua brass had a thicker neck and so was really binding in the chamber causing the over-pressure. A similar situation could occur here because as you shift the neck down the 30-06 cartridge, you are going to find the case wall thickens.

I have not had any pressure issues with this so far. I also do not run hot loads either. I have been doing it this way for around 15 years. Now the brass I use is once fired Winchester brass from a friend of mine. He saves the brass for me. That is definitely a point that I will keep in mind. I have certainly seen differences in the web and wall thicknesses of different makes of brass over the years.

Ww2 reinacters here leave a lot of blank shells & stuff. Since their already made i take their fired shells & trim the crimped mouths, aneal & fireform on 8mm from 270s, 280s & 30-06 brass. 30carb from 223s, 8mm kurz from 308s. I dont need the kurs but cut, bag & tag them just the same, i dont know what cal il get next as i load for about 65 dif. Cals. Up to 45mm cannon Among other things i even found an orig MP40 mag still full of blanks😊

*A "BODY DIE" ... or "FORM AND TRIM DIE" .... DOES NOT HAVE THE DECAPPER & IS HOLLOW , to allow air to escape. Those are the cat's meow for reforming or wildcatting brass ... when the shoulder must be set back. "BODY DIE" is a REDDING brand name for this tool. RCBS call it a FORM AND TRIM. Other brands might call it some other name. Body or Form and Trim die... You might like it. Some versions of this allow a properly adjusted die to be at just the right height to file off the excess brass....while the brass is in the die... and whammo it is trimmed to correct length.... No saw or special trimmer tools needed. Then deburr and finish loading process. TECH TIP for filing brass down in the die and press.... BRASS FILINGS can become your enemy ... especially if you allow them into the hollow of your die or onto the press ram... YOU MIGHT want an air compressor and a blow gun handy to blow away the brass shavings.... This operation is possibly BEST done in a Machinists room, Garage, on a covered patio, or under a pavilion.*

@plow-boyengineering7053

If you mean before running it through the die, maybe. Never did that. if you did, you would be cutting off most of the annealed brass after you trimmed it to length. If you annealed too much trying to get the new (not yet formed) neck and shoulder, you might have to trash it. When I do it the way that I do, I know that I am getting the annealing in the right area every time. That is just me though. I was just showcasing the process that works for me.

Thanks, really interesting video. I have a 8mm Mauser and I have necked up 7x57 brass before with fair results. I had never thought to use 30-06. And I am a fan of using a bowel of water for the annealed cases. I was told by an "expert" that you don't need to do that, but I disagree. Now what is Cream of Wheat and what is that compared to Grits. We have none of that here in Australia. I have really enjoyed the video. I will watch all manner of reloading videos even though I have been reloading for 30 years. And I have subscribed, cheers

LOL. Grits are a medium ground corn food that is boiled till soft and served with various ingredients added in. Redeye gravy, butter, bacon, eggs, cheese, or shrimp. Cream of wheat is a similar product made from wheat. Grits are a deep south United States food while Cream of wheat is a northern thing. I use them dry as a case filler so I can fire form my brass. Not sure what, in your region, would be a suitable equivalent. Nice to speak to people in other countries. Great to meet you.

Good Day Andrew from Toronto Canada : Nice to hear from you . I also use hot water in the annealing process . I put about one hundred 30 06 Springfield spent empty brass into a cast iron pot . These 30 06 have been neatly cut to 8 mm Mauser neck length and deburred . I use a mercury glass thermometer and dump the room temp shells into the water that's preheated to about 200 degrees F . I leave them to soak down to about 165 degrees F , then dump them out and blow them dry with compressed air .

Why not just get the RCBS 8x57 trim die? You have to cut down the 30-06 brass anyway. You also miss the neck trim and turning steps because the neck is too thick from the should becoming the new neck.

Great Video. I've been a Ballistician for over 53+ years. I was wondering why you havn't converted your 8mm over to an 8mm/06. I did that to an 8mm Chech made Mauser 98 with a 29 inch Barrel. When I re-chambered it I cut the barrel down to 27.6 inches and re-crowned it. Not only did it cure the problem of not being able to get 8mm ammo and Brass but the accuracy and velocity was much much higher and better. 30-06 brass is still cheap and plentiful and the bullets were too. But now 8mm Bullets are drying up. It just seems like a lot more work to make 8mm Mauser Brass than it is to convert over to an 8mm/06. But with the current way things are going it's getting more difficult to get a lot of the re-loading stuff we need.

I would rather not suggest a load. That is something that you have to figure out yourself. Every rifle is different. Just have to start low and work up looking for pressure signs. Usually, the sweet spot is somewhere in the middle anyway.

I'd like to figure out that "epoxy jig" you made for the chop saw. Your improvised annealing set up is genius! Maybe I didn't catch it, did you use a standard shellholder? I've read where some folks grind their "conversion shellholder" down to ensure a full resize of the case.
@plow-boyengineering7053
@plow-boyengineering7053 Жыл бұрын
For the epoxy jig I just made a large cigar of pig putty. Then, with silicon spray as a release agent, I pressed the shell down into it making sure that the pig putty filled the rim gap completely. when it cured, I popped the shell out and cleaned it up with a Dremel tool. I did this on a dead flat surface so that it would be square in the little chop saw. I did not modify my shell holder for the resizing. It is the same shell holder that I reload with.

Early 8mm Mausers had a bore diameter of ..318". Sometime prior to WW2 that diameter was increased to .323". This confusion was directly related to the accuracy problems that many post war sportsman ran into. That is why the 8mm was never held in high regard here in the USA.

@plow-boyengineering7053

The C.O.A.L. is the SAAMI standard. It is a measurement guideline that serves a few purposes. First, it gives a guideline for standard chamber dimensions. Second, it gives a measurement that should fit most if not all magazines. Normally the closer to the lands and grooves that you seat a bullet, the better the accuracy. This means that most hand loaded precision rounds will be longer than the SAAMI standard. This gives the round less "jump" to the riffling. All of my other rifles like this loading. I keep them at the maximum allowed for the magazines. My Mauser, however, dose not like this reduced jump for reasons that I cannot explain. I also only shoot 170 gr Speer Hot Core pills in this rifle. The Hot Cores are short and stumpy. I actually get better accuracy with a longer jump. Again, I have no idea why. Since the bullet has such a short ogive, I can safely seat them deeper. The heel is not seated past the bottom of the neck and therefore does not decrease case volume. This in turn does not cause any pressure spike. I also never load any of my ammunition "hot". I find that I get the best accuracy in the just above the median velocity loads. I chronograph all my loads during work up and from batch to batch. The SAAMI specs are guidelines to keep your loads safe and feeding reliable. When you get into precision loading and have a lot of experience under your belt, you have a better understanding of what is actually happening inside the chamber. I have been at this for 34 years and there is 2 constants.....1-you learn new stuff every day and 2-there are absolutely no stupid questions. I hope this was helpful.

*OR, FOR LESS STRESS ON THE PRESS... SIMPLY NECK UP to 8mm-06 wildcat round. IF you decide that 8 Mausers CORROSIVE ammo is not for you... 8mm-06 wildcat 'rechambered' factory barrel would eliminate any headspace problems and allow for ""much easier conversion"" of 30-06 brass 'at roughly full length' with very little trimming. AND, the shoulder of the 30-06 brass does not need pushing back.... The neck part of the brass is still the neck. Just slightly larger diameter neck, now. 8mm -06 with any of the right powders in the right amount can be a little more powerful than 8x57. 8mm-06 is a ONE WAY conversion... There will be no going back to shooting CORROSIVE surplus 8x57 IS/JS or 7.92x57 IS ammo. FOR 8mm-06 200 & 220 bullets are a nifty little slayer for Deer, Elk, Moose and small to midsize bears.*
