Great work, definitely will give it a try. One thing you need to bear in mind though, is you need to change the weld wire to the un-shielded one.

Useful video. The "nozzles" are called "hose barbs" and available in various male threads and barb (the part you insert in the hose) outside diameters.

Your solenoid has two (probably tapped) mounting holes. Why did you not use them for a much more rigid and safe mounting?

Great detail I was just getting ready to see what I needed to convert to gas so I can weld sheet metal better. Thanks
@danburch99897 жыл бұрын
Excellent conversion. The only thing I would suggest is when passing tubing through sheet metal, drill the hole larger and instll a rubber grommet. It will better protect the tubing. I find it hard to believe the valve has to be mounted with wire. Are the two holes at the bottom of the valve threaded? I can't tell from the video and it doesn't look like any screws in there are holding the solenoid together.

Argon and c02 aren't volatile gasses, so even if it wears through, you won't have to worry about anything dangerous.

I know this is old but from the solenoid to the marching. Is the brass valve a 1/4 male x 1/4 hose barb or is it 1/4 male to 1/8 hose barb. I was looking at the hose fitting on the machine and it looks like it’s 1/8. I don’t was to use the wrong hose and hose barb and have gas leaking on the gas input on the machine.

@Flightsimclub3 жыл бұрын
Nice video. But why didn’t you just mount the solenoid through the hole on the back side of the welder? Instead of running the hose through.
@NOWAN19805 жыл бұрын
Great conversion, which is the soleniod size, is it a 1/4 inches type? Thanks!
@Comm0ut2 жыл бұрын
If you have multiple welding machines you can plumb a 5/8-18 RH x 1/4 Male to the back of the welder to use standard welding gas hose and fittings. A bulkhead connector or other strain relief will protect your solenoid valve. It's only plumbing so whatever fits and works safely is fine. The Weldingweb forums have many posts on small welder conversions and are noob friendly. While MIG mix welds with less spatter these feeble little machines weld better on thicker stock using CO2 whose cylinders also last much longer because CO2 stores as a liquid while MIG mix stores as a gas. Best to have both so I do. The small "kegerator" size CO2 cylinders are nice for mobile work.

Tape on your regulator is a bad idea. The threads do ZERO sealing. The only sealing is on the face of the fitting. Good idea though about just making my own kit instead of purchasing one. In my case, I may go with a 120v solenoid as that is what I'm running on.

You don't need tape on the threads on the regulator where it threads into the tank. The threads DON"T seal.

@watcherwatchmen77855 жыл бұрын
@@kirkearl If it was oxygen, YES you would have a hazard with that setup but since you're using argon/co2 they are inert gasses, so you're ok. I'd remove the tape anyways though.
@JuniperSystemsInc5 жыл бұрын
@@watcherwatchmen7785 Thanks. I've learned a lot since making the video. I was afraid at first the gas was a ticking time bomb, but I've since learned the difference. I've taken the tape out of there too. This set up has been working great for a few years now.
@hughobrien41392 жыл бұрын
If those fittings are not sealing up and they’re allowing gas to escape usage then there is nothing wrong with using some Teflon tape to seal it up. People use tape for inappropriate reasons all the time. Not everyone has the means to run out and buy a new regulator and they’re not filling gas bottles for free anywhere. So screw the tape pundents and use tape if that’s what seals up a leak. Unless they want to buy your gas for you in leu of your roll of Teflon tape, then you shouldn’t listen to a word. Half these bottles are never checked for damage at their sealing points in the first place.

Correct. If you have a leak coming from that junction, it will be because the seat or surface is nicked or damaged. Sometimes they can be dressed up with a fine stone and a magnifying glass to get rid of the burr.But for safety, I'd always recommend just replacing the damaged part.

I have cheap HF AC 100A welder, it doesnt support gas. On ebay i found a kit with mig gun with euro connector , socket and gas solenoid. "Mig Welding Euro Torch Conversion & MB15 EuroTorch 4Mt + Inst & Gas Solenoid E79" Its easy to convert this welder to DC (rectifier 150A + big capacitor) and then install the kit, do some wiring, add transformer for solenoid and relay and basically you have mig welder with gas support. I even had idea to make my own new gun so i can add gas hose to it etc. It will be a bit cheaper. just buy a gas solenoid. I have everything else. but i dunno yet. maybe its easier to buy gun that supports all this already Kit itself is 100€ including shipping. With small cylinder of gas and reductor the total price will be around 200€, still 100€ cheaper than buying cheapest gas ready machine. i bought the welder from ebay for 80€ electrics and electronics is my hobby, so wiring is not a problem this is my plan and im gonna try it.
