Thanks for sharing this. I'm planning to do something similar to another older radio, as the build quality on the new ones isn't like it used to be.

I have a Belkin F5x007 XM boombox and would love to do this. It uses 8 C batteries or a 12V DC adapter. What voltage LIPO battery should I get? And will I need a different step down since you’re only using 9 volts

Sure they make different size "buck converter step down" modules. They have potentiometer (screw turn knob) that adjusts the voltage from like 7-32volt (you should only have to adjust it once) and they have 3.3, 5, and 12v adapters too. Heres a link to an example (sorry it's ebay but it will give you an idea, and they make smaller ones without the case.) And depending on what kind of electronics u have at the house u may have one hiding in an old car adapter or gadget. www.ebay.com/itm/143015560549 One example: I use old usb car adapters to convert 12v to 5v for projects because they are a dime a dozen and I have a ton around my workshop. I can't remember off the top of my head what converts to 12v but alot of drone PDBs have 12v power converters on them. And rule of thumb it's usually better to step down than to step up for runtime etc. 12volt is so close to 3s lipo (12.6volt) you might be able to use that directly or if that doesn't give you a good runtime use a 4s battery (16.8) with a 12v step down module. And honestly on the safety end it may be good idea to use whatever converter you choose on conjunction with a Lipo safety buzzer so you don't drain the cells below 3.3v and get into battery. problems. Alternatively they make "battery balance boards" which may regulate the lipo cutoff voltage and facilitate charging from a wider voltage range. It's like a computer chip u can solder onto a battery pack that regulates the charge and discharge. Or as long as you keep an eye on the voltage and you don't let the battery run down too low. Sorry if this was more confusing , I love this stuff and u got me going :P but yeah if u ever need help I'm always around. FYI: A 3s lipo = 3x 4.2volt cells in series to make 12.6volt

But yeah if it were me I would just use a 3s battery and a lipo buzzer so it doesn't discharge too much. That will tell you voltage on the fly and beep when battery is dead .

@@bonzaifpv3015 thank you so much. I’ll be sure to come back for more questions
