Using your house's existing ethernet connections as a telephone jack. (I don't think you can use telephone as ethernet though).
This is also how you connect your connect digital phone line to the analog phone ports in your house.

Yes, it was designed that way. You can actually run both computer and phone on the same wire (not if you have gigabite ethernet) Orginally RJ45 was created to carry two phone lines (four wires) and ethernet (four wires). When gigabite came out it uses all eight lines. Yes millions of extra lines were ran and never used in the 90's.

Ok I have a landline. My router I bought netgear nighthawk does not have a phone jack to plug in. It has ethernet. I'm wondering if there is a device that converts my ethernet on my modem to a landline ? So I can plug in my landline to my modem threw my ethernet somehow?

thanks forthe video, i have the same problem, I have one question. The "MB rounded" cable which is connected to the router , is it connected to the telephone port of the router?

So in order for all this to work, I will need the initial modem's RJ11 port to RJ45 port connected right?

Do I get it right, in your MB where is the telephone line, you connected that MB phone line(rj11 port) with another line in LR (rj45) - with rj11 cable coz it fit in both connectors (rj11 can be plugged into rj45) and the MB with LR is connected to switch and it works? Because I have an ONT box which my ISP told me where should I have my phone connected, it is TEL1 port which is RJ11 ( all other ports are rj45, just the phone ofc is @ 11). But now I have my phone near the RACK where is my switch and its under the stairs so the phone is in a really bad position and I wanna change that, but I dont wanan get another cable in house I wanan use my cat 5 cables with RJ45 so what is the trick u mentioned there?:P what should I do can I just take one end of the cable which is RJ45 and change it to RJ11 and that RJ11 just plug into ONT TEL1 port and the other end can stay asj RJ45?? how to crimp these connectors ? I use T568B , thank you very much for an answer :P

honestly I'm not sure what you're asking. You have an existing cable you want to use? I didn't modify the cables, I used the existing network wiring in my house. What are you planning to do with the rj11-rj45 cable you want to make?
@riconaut-
@riconaut- 10 жыл бұрын
Ok I will try to make it simple this time :) phone = rj11 modem = rj11 cables in my house cat5 = RJ45 I need to use one cable (cat5 rj45) to plug it into modem. How to crimp that cable or what is necessary to do :) thank you a lot :)
@theaaronloy
@theaaronloy 10 жыл бұрын
so you want to modify your rj45 cable and make it into an rj11? You can, but not sure why you'd do that. You can fit rj11 to rj45 port You can't fit rj45 into rj11 port If you're trying to convert an rj45 to an rj11, you'll need to buy the smaller rj11 head seperately. Not sure if you can just cut a part off. Might as well get a cheap new rj11-rj11 cable.

Quick question. I was provided with a router with both RJ45 and RJ11 (VOIP), but its a crappy one. I exchanged it into an Asus but this new one has only RJ45 ports. Question is, can i somehow connect the VOIP phone, which is rj11 to the new router (rj45) and skip the old router? Now i have the old one connected just to have VOIP and the new for internet.
@theaaronloy
@theaaronloy 7 жыл бұрын
I doubt the asus router has in built voice capability, otherwise there would be a dedicated phone connector (rj11). A local company of mine does something similar - they provide a digital phone service but the router is like shiet. So what I did, was set the router with voice as a bridge and connect to the asus router. This way, I get to keep the digital voice line, while using the better asus router for all internet traffic. Check with your telco.

You cannot convert ethernet to telephone because it is going from 8 wires to 4 or 2 wires. You can only go the other way around as shown in this video. This is a standard way of wiring a building for voice and data without using multiple sets of equipment.

Hi Aaron, I do not have a MB port in the switch area as I have only 1 LAN port in the Living Room. In my case, can this work if I place a switch as a bridge from the modem (with LAN and Telephone line) to the LAN port?

No. You need a telephone (2-4 wire) signal put into the ethernet (8-wire) network) in order to get the telephone signal out. You need to get a modem and service that includes telephone or you can't get telephone.

It is DSL, you need phone line for the internet. Yea you could rpbably do that.
@makefixbuild
@makefixbuild 5 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have a DSL router/modem combined. The RJ11 port on your device is for the modem and needs to be connected as directly as possible to the phone company's box (NID) attached to your residence. Connecting it via RJ11 -> RJ45 port on one side and then at the other end going back from RJ45 -> RJ11 to connect at the NID may work if you have a good signal. But if it at all possible you should avoid running it through multiple adapters and ports like that. Ideally you'd want a single cable going from your modem's RJ11 port to the NID's RJ11 port.
