This video describes the things I had to do to convert the Walthers tug model to look like the Meitowax of the LIRR. It does not show any of the actual construction, just the things that need to be done.
My model railroad is a 10' x 13' HO scale shelf layout set on Long Island in the mid 1960s (give or take). Why I model the LIRR is a long story... I am in the process of changing part of the layout to add more waterfront and the Phelps-Dodge copper refinery.

Very nice video feature and very nice model. You seem to have captured all the nuances of MEITOWAX and I love how you explained the name, something I was not aware of. Also, thank you for giving my article and writing effort credit for this. MIKE BOLAND

My pleasure. I am a firm believer in giving credit where it is due. Thank YOU for the inspiration and nice comments. Please watch some of my other videos and let me know what I've got wrong!

Wow! That's a lot of work. Similar (or familiar) but different, and those differences are so many little details.

It's a signature piece, so I wanted to make it as correct as possible. I don't usually get that into the weeds on things.

I bought a Lindberg tug for $20 and swapped the diesel stack out for a taller one because mine burns coal. It even comes with 5 crewmen. I bought some tires, the rope bumper and an anchor for it. I have a clamp-on shelf for it that I attach behind the car ferry.

That's great. I've thought about having a moveable ferry but the logistics are pretty difficult with my current setup.

Tugs come in right after trains for me. Maybe because my dad's father was an ocean going tug captain in England before they immigrated here. Unfortunately he was killed in a hit and run accident looong before I was born. I would have loved to hear his sea stories. Anyway, your model is beautiful. Congrats on your fine work. I really like your bow bumper . How did you make it? I have a small tug model on my layout and my wife crocheted the bumper for me. It came out rather nice. Your layout is very well done ,thanks for sharing.

The bumper actually came with the model. It's all in the paint job, I guess. Thanks for your kind comments!

I used a Revell re-released tug kit in HO for my layout. The Blackjack is on a platform which is clamped to the end of the layout adjacent to the car float stern.

I thought about doing something similar and having the car float move between two docks but it was too technically demanding for my limited skills!

Just gorgeous indeed! Your layout seems to be spectacular. Given your channel name, isn't it a shame that Walthers who gave us the first Bart train, the Metroliner, the DC Metro and my absolute favourite, the NYCTA R21 subway sets but never bothered to give us the LIRR M1, M3 or M7 in HO as that would've been magnificent. Oh, and also the same cars for the Metro-North railroad. Great job on your Tugboat!

You would think they would, considering how long running and reasonably successful the LIRR is. I wonder how its passenger miles compares to other lines?
