Long Island Rail Road, Montauk Branch

Күн бұрын

A five-car train led by FM H16-44 #1501 departs the yard and services the first two of several industries on the Montauk Branch.
My model railroad is a 10' x 13' HO scale shelf layout set on Long Island in the mid 1960s (give or take). Why I model the LIRR is a long story... It's "done" to all outward appearances, for now...

I love Alcos but have a soft spot for F-M also. Nice to watch this one in action. Looking forward to part 2.

I agree. It's a coincidence that the LIRR ran Alcos and FMs at the time I model. They bought some EMDs shortly after.

An inspiration for my own modest 2' x 12' shelf layout! Always interesting videos! Cheers from Belton MO!

Hello. I rode the LIRR from the Ronkonkoma station to Bethpage until I left in 1994. I lived in Bohemia, about 200 yards north of Sunrise Highway on "Smithsomething" road. I remember goin into Sayville, and having a cargo train or two at the crossing before getting into the old town.

Ironically I've never been to Long Island. Did you work at Grumman? I worked for Northrop Grumman in California for quite a while.

Enjoyed watching your Ops session…mainly you seem to have fun doing it…like the industrial scene

Thanks. It is fun, I need to do it more often. I have this sneaking fear that if I run trains too often I'll get tired of it. Is that silly of me?

@@longislandrailroadmontaukb982 Difficult question…I need to run mine more…being an engineer I fear I enjoy the creativity part of the hobby more than the actual running

The funny thing is I've never been to Long Island. The closest I came was a weekend in NYC about 40 years ago! Went to the top of the World Trade Center and I have the button to prove it!

I love the layout. FMs are cool. I bought one of those Oxford Chryslers, I found that it isn't HO scale. I think it's OO.
@longislandrailroadmontaukb982
@longislandrailroadmontaukb982 Жыл бұрын
I looked it up. The real thing is 18' 4" long. The model is almost exactly that according to my HO scale ruler. Those things were enormous!
@paullindell
@paullindell Жыл бұрын
@@longislandrailroadmontaukb982 I went and found my Chrysler. My version came out at 19 feet on the HO ruler. I have a 1961 Dodge Polara 2 dr. Made by Revell. The chrysler dwarfs the Dodge. Both of those cars were considered full size in their lines. What is really obvious is the big difference in tire size between the two. OO = 1:76.2, HO = 1:87. Oxford does a huge OO business in the UK. I think what may have happened is a OO version was put in HO packaging. I love the Oxford models but I didn't buy any more because of the scale issue.

Since there were track workers adjacent to the track, shouldn't the engineer have been sounding the bell during the entire movement?
@longislandrailroadmontaukb982
@longislandrailroadmontaukb982 Жыл бұрын
You got me. Yeah, should have been sounding the bell. I should have at least mentioned that would be the correct thing to do, even if I didn't have the bell going the whole time (it does get annoying) but I didn't even think about it.
