This was a great era in country music. The performer just stepped up to the mike and sang. No blaring backup, no acoustics drowning him out, no light show distracting you from the performer. Simply music. Then there is the lyrics themself. They mean something

These old country music singers were and still are the greatest singers and performers to ever live. They can and never will be replaced with anything close to the quality they had. They were the product of their times. They sang what they felt from their hearts and the hearts of the folks that listened to them. They sang about real life experiences good times and bad times that folks go through everyday and about the way people lived life in that time. Honky tonks and bar rooms, love and marriage, betrayal, death, trains, accidents, work, country folks, living on the road. About everything people experience. The songs people could relate to because they touched the souls of everyday people. They were wonderful entertainers that could sing like angels so to speak.

A couple of months before Conway passed away, my older brother was OTR truck driver and happened on Conway at a truck stop out in PA. He said he talked to him while they were servicing his bus and Conway was the coolest and was really engaged in their visit. When my brother came home later he told our whole family about it. We knew our Dad used to play in a house band on the ballroom circuit in MN, and had played (drums) at a couple venues with Conway appearing with some other early Boppers coming thru MN and IA in the late 50s (they didn't always travel with a band, and performed one or two songs during the shows, and music was sent out by mail ahead of the show dates). Dad told us Conway was a hard working singer for his fans, the people that bought his records, everyone who came out to see him, and was also a talented musician..... a real Pro...... I bet it brought back great memories for my Dad to talk about it................................. I wish I coulda been there..............Watch "It's Only Make Believe on the Inner Tube...you'll see what I mean..............

I was fortunate enough to meet him on two occasions. Once, when I was 4, he was walking through the audience and had passed us a few times. He stopped after he finished the song and asked me my name. He was surprised that I knew every word to his songs. He asked if he could sing me my favorite song on stage and my grandparents (who'd taken me to the show) said that was fine. He sang Tight Fittin' Jeans to me and gave me a big hug. I saw him again when I was 12. He remembered me...and my favorite song. He sang it to me again. I've met several famous people, from multiple genres and art forms (movies/music/sports/books/art) but he was hands down, one of the nicest people I've met. I've passed on a love of classic country to my son who knows the words to almost all of his songs too.
