Twitty is a legend. I grew up with my mom blaring Conway throughout the house when I was a kid. Some people can raise the hair on your skin when they sing live and Conway was one of them. He gave it all in this performance... When he didn't have to.

What a voice! As famous as he was, he continued to play small county fairs where he would walk around and talk to audience members before the show. Very humble and genuine. R.I.P to a great, talented man.

I didn't get to see Merle...but I saw Conway Twitty, George Jones (who opened his show by singing "No Show Jones"), and Skip Ewing. No Merle, but still a great night. My supervisor was a fan of all 3, and it was the weekend of her birthday. I bought her a new gown, borrowed my friend's limousine and paid his nephew, took her to her favorite restaurant, and to the concert...couldn't get front row by the stage, but she was short and the center front row of the mezzanine was "perfect" for her. I wasn't brown nosing...she was my on-site supervisor but had no say as far as raises, promotions, etc...basically just a liaison between our company and our client company. She was a friend of my Mom, we were both fans, she had never been in a limo, and it was an opportunity for me to dress up nice and take the limo out and have good clean fun with someone who really appreciated it (as she was a single mother of two teens and rarely got anything for herself).

I had the Privilege to see Conway Twitty in 1958 at the age of 8 in Hamilton Ontario Canada where he actually wrote It`s Only Make Believe while in a restaurant bored to death, he wrote it in about 15 to 20 minutes, I was in a Yo Yo Competition at the York Movie Theater where I won and Conway was the singer, there was a Blonde Lady there also who sang with him but I don`t know who she was, Conway told the story of being bored and wrote a song just for us and then he sang it and because I won the Yo Yo Competition along with the 2nd and 3rd place he gave us our trophy, I got patches and a vest and he gave me a signed record, my brother took it, oh well. He sat me on his knee and told me that I did good with the tricks, typical tricks for an 8 yr old, back then, nothing like today but I will NEVER forget the gentle hug he gave me and a kiss on my cheek there must of been maybe 100 people in there because the theater was small. I was in Love, IF I only knew, but at 8 you don`t know the magnitude of this singer back then to me he was just a singer there who congratulated me, gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek and I got to sit on his lap, no security just a guy who sings. RIP Conway...Canada Loved you...

@@danc3693 I love George Jones! No one and I mean no one could ever mean more to anyone as a singer than George Jones did for my Dad! He was Dad's hero! I love all country, bluegrass (I am from Eastern KY) so music was embedded into my ears and my soul as soon as my parents brought me home from the hospital! My Mammaw kept me while my parents moved and she had to find something to soothe me. She found a old transistor radio that belonged to my Pappaw and played the radio station that had old country/bluegrass music on it! She said that was the only way to calm me!

I love this song; its harmonies in the background are great, and Conway sings it as a long crescendo (moreso in the original than this later version), which was a rare thing for a singer to do - the only other great crescendo song I know of is 'Sound of Silence' by Disturbed. I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one who thought this was Elvis when we were young and ignorant.

Twitty City now owned by Trinity Broadcasting. I answered this question a year or so ago but wanted to amend my response. The answer is now no to it all. Not only is the mansion and gift shop shut down, they've closed down the pretty gardens and the painting of the Tweety bird that Conway had put there. Trinity Broadcasting now does weekly tapings of the Mike Huckabee show on site. And it seems most of the changes happened right around the time they started doing the tv show there. They have security cars patrolling all the time so you can't even drive through the parking lot without being followed. And it's a shame, the gardens of the mansion were very pretty w/ sculptures, fountains, benches. On the plus side, you can get free tickets to the Mike Huckabee show if you want. It looks like they have a nice variety of guests on the show.

Conway wrote this song in my home town of Hamilton Ontario Canada around 1956. He was playing at the Flamingo Hotel under the name of Harold Jenkins at the time. He assumed his stage name after checking out a map. Conway Arkansas and Twitty Texas.

@Wayne Marston, Conway told the story at a live show: he knew "Harold Jenkins " wasn't a famous name but had trouble finding a name that wasn't his. He opened a map, closed his eyes, and touched it twice. Hence, Conway, Arkansas and Twitty Texas.

Conway Twitty is much more than just this song. One of the greatest voices in music ever. He had a knack for finding the right song, then knowing how to sing it. The Conway growl is legendary. He lives every song as he sings it. Each song he recorded was meant to touch the heart, and he accomplished that with ease. These are but a couple of reasons Conway Twitty was called " The Best friend a song ever had.". Just listen to a few songs and take in the feeling and emotion he puts into every song. Twitty City is now Trinity City. It is a shell of its original. TBN owns it and they have 2 auditoriums for speakers to be filmed. You have to look a certain way to get in. The preach "GIVE, GIVE, GIVE!" While the woman has had about 10 facial procedures because she has to look her best for the lord. The clothes, gilt chairs. It's a downright shame. Nothing even looks the same. There are no attractions, just a gift shop and the 2 auditoriums. All the rest gone. I have a picture of me and my Daddy riding camels at Twitty City.
