Conway Twitty was an American country music singer who also had success in the rock & roll, R&B & pop genres in the 50's-90's. He has won numerous awards for his music & performed with some of the biggest stars. He had a lot of great duets with Loretta Lynn ("After the Fire Is Gone", "Lead Me On", "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man", "As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone", "Feelins'", "I Still Believe In Waltzes", "I Can't Love You Enough"). Other songs he recorded were "Hello Darlin'", "Danny Boy", "Lonely Blue Boy", "Next In Line", "You've Never Been This Far Before", "Don't Take It Away", "I May Never Get To Heaven" & many more.

Loved this iwas only 7 my 17 yr old brother let me listen to his records Today he turned 83, and in 3 weeks I'll be 73. He was in the running with Elvis in 1958, An yes I think the 53 other #1s were country. Thanks for the time travel back to my favorite growling Conway Twitty song.❤

Conway Twitty was one of several artists (Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich were others) who began their careers as rockabilly singers (singers raised in country tradition, but incorporating a heavy R&B influence) and later turned to country music (most of the 54 #1s mentioned in the intro were country songs). He was born Harold Jenkins in Friars Point MS and took his stage name from Conway AR and Twitty TX. He also had a series of successful duets with Loretta Lynn. You are correct about the record charts. The main one is the Hot 100, but there are others for country, R&B, jazz, gospel and other genres.

This song came out when i was 13 years old. I still love hearing it. I am almost 79 now. And this was considered a soft rock song. He switched to country later.

When it comes to Country Music, Conway Twitty was among the best there was. His 55 number 1 hits were only beaten once, and that was years after Conway's death by George Strait (his final count was 62). Conway also probably has the most number 2 hits in Country Music, along with dozens of others that only made it into the top 10. Also, he did not get worse with age, although his sales slowed down the last few years, his last 2 albums "Even Now" and "Final Touches", were 2 of the best he ever made. Conway had numerous hits you can check out, but I'm recommending a few of his final recordings just so you can see how good he actually still was right before his untimely death. Just about anything off of his last 2 albums is great but check out "It's Such a Heartache", "Who Did They Think He Was", and "Final Touches." Great Stuff! One of his hits that everyone on KZbin seems to love is "That's My Job" which is a great one.

This song was No. 1 on the Billboard top 100, he charted 19 on the Billboard top 100, but this was his only No.1, the remainder No. 1's were on the country charts, which was a feat unequalled for decades until King George, George Strait came along with his 60 No. 1's.

Number one on Pop charts, played everywhere. Pop music was less segregated in late 50's-60's on the charts unlike media portrayal today. The top ten for any week could include, doo wop, big band (Lawrence Welk type), rockabilly, rock and roll/ R and B. A lot great singers from every genre. Not much difference between country and rock and roll/R and B back at that time.

Conway had a total of 55 #1s, a record finally surpassed by George Strait, and Strait has the advantage of being alive! The Twitty story is very sad after he died. Family fights over the estate, etcetera. Really ugly.
