It's so interesting to read the comments about having stand mixers, chips etc in the 50s. I'm Irish and we were a third world country in the 50s, there was a lot of houses with no electricity then especially in the country. We had mass emigration and we were still reeling from the war in the early 50s. America was so advanced then. I remember looking at films in the 80s + 90s and people had dishwashers and phones in their bedrooms. We didn't get a house phone till the mid 90s. I remember my mother went into labour with my brother in 92 and I had to run to our neighbours to use her phone to ring an ambulance 😂

I completely agree about iceberg! Don't get me wrong, I like a good spring mix, but iceberg doesn't get enough love. And it should be the only lettuce used on a BLT and that's a hill I'll willingly die on.

I was born in 1948, so a child of the 50’s. I don’t remember my mother ever using a cookbook, but I am the 4th of 5, so she had been cooking for many years. Funny story re: pineapple upside down cake. It was my older brothers very favorite. Mother made one and left. She came home and he had eaten the whole top ..just cake left.

Best advise for the leftover box of cornflake crumbs: Use them as a coating for either chicken or fish. One of my favorite recipes is for "Faked Out Fried Chicken." It oven-baked chicken covered in cornflake crumbs. It tastes like fried chicken but it's healthier since it's baked. 😊

Yes they had stand mixers in the 50s, our house was built in the 1920s and the last time the kitchen was remodeled was 1940. Yes, the cabinets are green but there are amazing divided drawers, even a pullout platform for a stand mixer!

This was such a fun video to watch! And it brought back memories of me learning to cook, and my mom having me make scrambled eggs in a double boiler. It was a much safer cooking method for a 7-year-old. I moved up to sunny side up eggs not too long after that, but only if she was able to supervise while I stood at the stove. Only problem was I actually made them better than she did so very quickly I was the egg cooker for breakfast. 🤣😁🍳. (Miss you mom ❤️)

Dessert when I was a kid in the '70s and '80s was often chilled canned apricots or chilled canned plums. I loved them for dessert! I have a hard time finding either in the grocery stores around here. Will have to search them out again.

Jen, they forgot to tell you to pound out that flank steak super thin before stuffing. For an even better version of this dish search for Italian Braciole, a flank steak stuffed with Italian herbs and bread crumbs, finished in a simple Italian tomato sauce! DELISH! And, the pineapple upside down cake can be make in extra large muffin tins, as single serve yumminess! A restaurant I love in Nokomis, FL makes it in single serve portions and it is AMAZING with melting vanilla ice cream! God bless, I love your channel!

@Jen-Chapin it's delicious! We Italians tend to make them often. I fry mine lightly, then throw them into my sauce (gravy lol), and let them simmer along with the meatballs, sausage, etc. They're a special treat at dinnertime. Everyone in my house fights over them, so make enough lol.❤ you can use either beef or pork. Some stores sell them ready made, if you don't want to stuff your own.

The first handheld electric mixer patent was submitted by Sunbeam Corporation in 1953 and granted in 1961. Manual hand mixer or beater was invented in 1850, this is what my Grandmother and Mother used. The first electric motorized hand mixer my Mother had was from Hamilton Beach. She passed it along to my wife, and we still have today. Our family had it's first microwave in 1976, a Tappen. The main use was to reheat leftovers or a meal in pyrex bowls. I don't remember the price, but we acquired it from Walmart (no it wasn't past on to us.) Prior to the Bicentennial we still waited for our Swanson TV dinner to heat in the regular oven for about 45 minutes. Funny it wasn't until 1986, Swanson responded by swapping their long-used metal tray for a plastic one suitable for microwaves. This soon became an industry standard. And yes Mom still popped the Jiffy-Pop popcorn on the range top. The first microwave ovens landed in restaurants, ship galleys and canteens in 1946 weighing over 750 pounds, standing almost six feet tall and costing nearly $5,000. The first residential countertop microwaves-like these models from Whirlpool brand-started selling in 1967 for just under $500. Don't get me started on our first "Mr Coffee" coffee pot and my Father installing the aftermarket 8 track tape player into our car. And Christmas 1972 the ultimate in technology occurred that elapsed everything else....... The Odyssey was manufactured by Magnavox and released in North America in September of 1972. It's considered the very first home video game console. Ralph Baer, a engineer, created a ping-pong style game. I was the coolest kid on the block, by far....lol. Your videos are a great comfort to me...keep it coming. Smashing the "thumbs up" and subscribe button. Stay way cool!

I don't know about this particular recipe, but my MIL taught me a similar one in the early 1990's. Take thin round steak and pound to a thin layer. Make Stovetop stuffing. The steak should be in individual pieces so put stuffing on top and roll. I put seam side down. No need for string or toothpicks. I put salt, pepper, garlic and a splash of "W" sauce. Cover lightly with foil and bake. I serve with brown gravy and corn. Family favorite! Hope you see this!

It's fun to see how popular food has changed so much over the years. (I found you from Anna's video btw.😃) Tip: Using a metal bowl for your double boiler will cook the eggs (or anything) quicker and still get the benefit of indirect heat.

I've done that rolled flank steak years ago, it was good. Usually we made the upside down cake in an 8x8 pan or larger. The big stand mixer in the 50s was the Sunbeam model. I had one for years. I remember my mom's from my childhood. I loved the chocolate chip cookies with pecans. They cooked eggs in a steamer basket. Mom didn't boil hers.

.Great collab! The PUD cake looked yummy. Don't know if anyone has pointed it out yet, but there was a flaw in your double boiler. A double boiler needs a good seal between top and bottom vessels to prevent the heat/steam from escaping.. You used a saucepan with pour spouts and much of your heat/steam escaped thru these spouts, hence why your eggs took so long to cook.

Oh my goodness! I love your vintage cooking ‘challenges’ you give yourself! I actually have this cookbook…I got it for a wedding gift, Ha! Telling my age. I agree that some of the things ladies used to make back then were so delicious! Like the salad dressings, simple ingredients that most folks have in their pantry with just a few oddball ingredients sometimes. Your salad looked so fantastic! I’ve never before added vinegar to deviled eggs or egg salad but I can see how it would work. I’ll give you a challenge for a future vintage video…frosting! I’m not big on cakes, but it may be because of the frostings of today. My mom made simple frostings that were so delicious! Thanks for this fun walk down memory lane. I love it!

I originally got the recipe from a sibscription recipe card either from Betty Crocker or another company that I can't remember the name of anymore. I lost both boxes of recipe cards in a house fire in '95 but I'd made it often enough to remember the basic recipe and kibd of winged ot from there. That's also where I found the recipe for Pork Chop Scallop. That recipe I managed to find online.

Jen, my Momma would use corn flake crumbs over her potato casseroles, like hash brown casserole. Just a suggestion.

You could use the corn flake crumbs for pie crust. Just make as yoU would a graham cracker crust.

I love this video. It brought back many memories. I have 3 versions of this cookbook. I think my oldest is from the 60’s. I learned to cook from these and the first recipe I made from it was peanut butter cookies for my dad. It became his favorite. I would love to find the 50’s one you have.

my mom had that cookbook. I use corn flake crumbs for breading chicken or topping cheesy potatoes.

In the 50s most people did not have nut allergies so maybe that’s why the nuts. Also, we tend to cater to our kids more these days. When I was a kid if mom cooked something we didn’t like….too bad! We ate it or did without. Lol
