I’ve always been very interested in Medieval food, and during my studies I came across many recipe books (not only for food, but for medicines and spells). So I went back to cookery manuscripts and looked for recipes that would have been cooked in the medieval period that I could make today. So, using the instructions provided by the manuscripts, I made pottage, gingerbread, and a tostee. One of the recipes even made me feel like I was in Middle Earth. This was a very fun video to make, I hope you enjoy it!
The British Library has an amazing catalogue of digitized manuscripts, and here's where you can find more information and digital versions of the texts I talk about:
Forme of Cury, The British Library, Add MS 5016, www.bl.uk/manuscripts/Viewer.a...
www.bl.uk/manuscripts/Default....
The British Library, Harley MS 297, searcharchives.bl.uk/primo_lib...
A cookery book: searcharchives.bl.uk/primo_lib...

Oh, I fan of Medieval food, Medieval times! I even have a book of medieval cooking!!! But I haven't cooked anything yet) The fact is that before food was meant as medicine. The cooks were compared to doctors. The chef must balance the four liquids in the human body - black bile, yellow bile, blood and mucus. And the cook added the necessary seasonings to maintain this balance in the human body. (According to the theory of Hippocrates)

I like this video idea, historical diets don't get as much attention as other subjects so another video of this would definitely be great.

i love how your eevee evolved into baby yoda 😂 this is such a cool video idea & i love how much research went into this!! i wonder at what point in history did people start taking that gingerbread recipe and shaping it into men? 😂 it actually looks really good though!!

Eevee and baby yoda are both excellent companions 😂 I believe that the men shaped gingerbread started showing up in Elizabeth I's court! It really was delicious, super different consistency from what we have, but a similar taste!

Thank you so much! That's really sweet of you! And it's an opal ring :) I was surprised I liked the taste of the soup as much as I did, but the spices blend surprisingly well together haha.

Hi! I'm so glad you like the channel! That makes me really happy! One of the issues with these recipes is that there are no measurements for anything, so I mostly guessed the quantities. All the manuscripts that I used are linked in the description, so you could try to guess too! Good luck making them!!

Really enjoyed your video, your tostee looks delicious! I'm a 14th century re-enactor in England (The Paladins of Chivalry), and usually we'll have pottage and a meat on display for the public and eat it for dinner once the crowds are gone. I've been looking into medieval desserts to demonstrate at shows (once Covid eases), do you have any recommendations?
@Medievalannie

Great to hear from you! I am planning on making another episode where I look at desserts, but I would start by looking at recipe manuscripts! You can find a lot of them transcribed online 😊

@@Medievalannie I hope you did! We have a lot of cooks in the SCA who love cooking from these cookbooks and manuscripts. I’m about to start my own channel as a way of making sure I do all my test cooking for a Tudor themed feast I am head cook for this coming December! I hope it turns out as lovely as yours.

Where would medevil people get the spices from? I doubt saffron and things would’ve grown in the uk ?
@Medievalannie
@Medievalannie 3 жыл бұрын
They would get them through trade! Because of that, many spices were considered luxury items, and were very expensive to acquire. There is a lot of information available online about the medieval spice trade if you'd like to do more research on it :)
