This is the closest recipe I have found to my mom's! She passed away 5 years ago & never wrote her recipes down. When we would ask her she wouldn't know the amounts of anything just " a little bit of this & that " . I'm excited to try this & have that taste again.

My Oma was really my Mom's oma. She passed away when I was two, but I grew up with a blanket she made me, and was told my Oma would always watch over me, and loved me dearly. My mother passed away at the start of the pandemic, and I've been lost without her. I've been trying to recreate dishes I remember her making me as a boy, that she learned from her Oma. When you came on screen I had an immediate emotional reaction I wasn't expecting. I'm a 32 year old man, and watched this with tears in my eyes. Thank you for this gift.

I use to work for a small bistro called Café Vienna, it was a quaint old style bistro run by a mother & daughter of European decent. These Roulades where famous & very tasty, I only made these once before but without the gravy, they where rubbed with oil & seasoning & put in a braising pan with home made beef stock as well, served with mashed Potatoes or Spätzle & Sauerkraut. Glad I saw this today cause I have been thinking of them for sometime & would love to make them again. Thanks for sharing & bring back a few memories.

Red cabbage, cinnamon apples, potato dumplings, fresh crusty bread, and center stage was Rouladen, using Oma's recipe, modified to suit our crowd. All of the items were never before made, and all turned out fantastic. Thank you for sharing and making this dinner a success!

My mum and Oma have cooked them for us and we grew up with the truly marvellous dishes that you prepare in your super presentations. I was very young when my Oma passed away but she taught my mum how to cook and bake. Mum passed away last year along with the knowledge that kept an endless supply of traditional food when we called on her. Thank you Oma for the lessons I should have learned by watching our mum. This takes me back. Grew up on German style food but my mother never made Rouladen. Learned it from a German friend in the early 1960s. She used just mustard, onion, and pickle inside. Maybe bacon. Oma's recipe is so much better! I also shake my flour-water mixture. Adding cold water to the pan before pouring in the flour mixture is new to me; will try it. Never too old to learn: I'm 77. Danke.

Love love love rouladen. My mother is from Germany and she made this often when we were kids. I finally got to make it with her for Christmas this past year. The only thing different is we don't chop the veggies and we don't use carrots or celery. We only use mustard, bacon, gherken pickles, and we add pepperoni (a good pepperoni stick, not cheap sliced pepperoni) to it. We thinly slice the veggies and layer them to make it easier to roll. We have never used celery seed before. I'll definitely have to add that next time we make them. And Maggi makes everything taste better. I just started watching your moms videos, and I love watching Oma. Her nightgown/robe reminds me of my mother now. Rouladen with spätzle is divine. After boiling the spätzle, we add it to a baking pan with butter and mix in shredded Swiss cheese and then add a layer on top and bake it. That is the best way to eat spätzle to me. Please tell Oma thank you for teaching us German food. She is awesome.

Enjoyed the video, I'm glad YT suggested it. In my family we use a slighlty different filling (no carot, and we use fatty bacon "fetter Speck" instead of ordinary bacon). Before braising the rouladen we tie them with a thin cotton yarn. It allows for the meat to be browned on all sides as there are no tooth picks sticking out. But it is a messy affair to get the thread off, especially once the rouladen have been kept warm in the sauce. lol
