That stove is sh!t-hot Stephen 😉 Brilliant that you can literally cook with what's lying at your your feet (or between your toes)! Loved the secret spa, gonna have to pay a visit the next time I'm down that neck of the woods. Gary is hilarious, great added entertainment value, looking forward to you carrying his gear next time 😂

When we watch your videos, my husband and I always make the same two observations. 1. your video quality is magnificent- about the best we watch on KZbin. 2. it always seems there are hardly any people on the mountains when you're out exploring. And both of these factors make us very keen to visit the Mourne Mountains!
@StephenJReid

Thanks very much Maxine (and husband!), I always try and keep improving my editing and approach to videos. I almost always go camping and exploring during the week. One of the benefits of self employment (although I’ll say nothing about the job security🙈). Mon-Thurs you could hike all day and meet a handful of people or even less. Certain areas (Donard in particular) can be very busy at the weekends.

That's an interesting stove and you can burn sheep poo . There's no shortage of that in the Mournes infact there's probably enough sheep poo in the Mournes to run Ballylumford power station for about 10 years 😃

I was in the same spot this weekend and the Thermocell backpacker works quite well against the midges. Also in the evening there are currently a bunch of dragonflies in the area.
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting! I had seen reviews saying they had no effect on midges so I’ve never bothered getting one. Did it work outside or in a tent?
@glassrobot
@glassrobot 2 жыл бұрын
I used it outside at the tent door where I spent most of the evening. The tent was full open and it kept the majority of them at bay all evening. Next morning I turned it on 10 minutes before getting out and again it cleared most of the midges. So far it has worked for me and hopefully it will continue to do so and I'm a bit of a midge magnet.
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid 2 жыл бұрын
@@glassrobot interesting! Was it windy? Many midges about in general? I might get one and test it! I had citronella candles, smoky fire and repellent and none of it worked
@glassrobot
@glassrobot 2 жыл бұрын
It was at the weekend and it was hot and there was a slight breeze at best. There was a moderate amount of midges enough that without it I would have been stuck in the tent on one of the hottest days of the year. Anytime I left the area around the tent I was getting attacked within a handful of minutes. The backpacker version is probably the one to go for in Northern Ireland as the gas is much more readily available. You can also use the travel plug mosquito pads I've only done it once but they work too although they are a bit thicker than the Thermocell ones so they don't slide in as nicely.

In India they dry buffalo dung everywhere for fuel. So not at all surprising that it works.
@DavidDoyleOutdoors
@DavidDoyleOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Ok I’m impressed, I didn’t think dung would have enough energy in it to get to a boil, tempted to buy one, will wait until the price comes down. You should know better than to camp in a sheltered valley near water after the last midge fest lol. Great video. Here’s hoping this video gets 10,000 views lol
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was really surprised how well it worked! Had as much heat energy as thin twigs and pine cones. The wind forecast changed! Was supposed to be 10-15mph winds.
@gordonmonaghan133

Often thought that wood burning stoves are the domain of the bushcrafter rather than the backpacker; especially someone like myself who prefers to camp out in the hills and mountains. ie where does such find available twigs and such, if only equipped with a wood burner? This stove would seem to provide the answer.

Does this Lofi stove work WITHOUT electricity? Like a Bushbuddy, or Solo Stove. I'm thinking, it's too easy to run out of battery. Love my original Bush Buddy Ultra, but this thing is very interesting. Would make some great meals with a wok when powered up, but I'd need it to work without power when applicable, or when there's no choice ... Thanks.
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid Жыл бұрын
Nope needs electric, but a small powerbank will keep it going for days, could even run off solar. A lot better than gas.
