In this video I am trying out a Solar Oven for the first time, using the power of the sun to cook a meal without the need for a stove or a fire.
I love the idea of using free renewable energy and so I was very excited to try out this ingenious product from the French solar company Solar Brother.
Solar Ovens take longer to cook that conventional methods, but by cooking softly and slowly, the valuable nutrients and flavours are not lost. You can set up this oven when you get to camp and leave it to do its thing while you get on with other tasks, knowing that when you are done, a tasty meal awaits. I can see this might be a great option if you live in an area where there are regular fire bans or you are not able to find fuel or if you want to keep a low profile and avoid attention from your fire’s smoke. As an emergency back-up cooking system or simply to take to the beach or on a picnic.
I chose challenging conditions to try out my oven - in winter with low sun, cold temperatures and a strong wind blowing across the flat marshes where I was - a tough test for its capabilities, but I was still impressed - next time I'll try in full sun in the middle of summer where I'm sure the results will be even more impressive.
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

That reminds me of the project we did in the Boy Scouts in 1976 for the District Scout Show/ Camporee. We built a solar cooker and cooked/warmed beanie weenies (sausages and beans). Our solar cooker was a large wooden box about 4 feet by 4 feet by about 1 foot deep. The face was a hinged glass panel and everything was painted black instead of mirrors. This was our project to complete the first requirement of the Energy Merit Badge which required the building of a "Solar Box" and explaining ways to avoid heat/energy loss. We earned a blue ribbon for our solar energy project for that event.

Love the concept Simon. I think you might have better luck given the wind by creating a larger air gap between pot and bag. Sort of inflate the bag as much as possible creating a warm air gap. If the bag is touching or close to the pot the wind will whip away a lot of the warmth whereas if there is an air gap the IR radiation from the mirrors will penetrate through the bag and heat the pot and the pot will be”insulated” by the relatively warm static air around it. Neat idea!

Agreed, however I think I would take it further, a bigger bag, that encloses the whole setup, plus, the oven itself, rather than tabs, it could use adjustable tabs, so after intial setup you can adjust each mirror to aim directly at the pot. As an FYI, Archimedes allegedely used polished copper mirrors to burn down Roman ships, and theres a site in France (Themis) that uses a whole hillside of mirrors directed at one point to melt exotic materials. NIce one Simon, very unusual.

Yeah. Maybe if you put the whole setup inside a clear bin bag and blow it up it will keep a nice closed greenhouse environment.

Better still wrap the whole thing in it's bag, stick a shipping label on it & send it to me here in Australia. It's 40 degrees outside today, so I reckon I could deep fry fish & chips in it.

That is my understanding too, the bag has to be like a balloon with the pot in the center. like being in a bivvy bag with no warm clothes to insulate you. The bivvy bag will not work against your skin. See what a good teacher you are. :) I have an interest too in seeing these things work...seeing how things are going we may need to rely on them.

Many, many years ago, my husband did an experiment in our back yard. Our back yard is in the Caribbean, however, this is the best I can remember. Two cardboard boxes. Lined the inside of the smaller box with foil. Put a layer of scrunched up newspaper in the bottom of the larger box. Place the smaller box on top and insulate the space between the two boxes (sides) with more scrunched up paper. Put a covered pot of chopped veg / seasoning / water / chicken into the small box. Placed a pane of clear Perspex or glass (can't remember which) over everything. A couple of hours later, everything was bubbling and cooked through. Delicious.

I used a similar solar cooker after hurricane Ian when the power was out and it worked great for reheating the food I had already prepared before the storm. But I am also on the Florida gulf coast and I have full sun all day long on my outdoor patio. You do have to turn the unit to face the sun about every 30-60 minutes for optimal cooking. Mine came with a sun gauge to show where the sun shadow is. It makes it easy to turn it continuously to face the sun.

Living on a narrowboat, and being off grid on my mooring, I already have a solar generator, and today I picked up my solar Fridge. I can't wait to try it out. Solar power is doable in the UK, but it's a shame we have such awful contrary weather! The concept of solar cooking is so interesting. I have been looking into it myself, to save on using gas to cook with. Great video Simon.😊

I used a solar oven in Florida, got it up slightly higher than 180c! My solar oven was a bucket with a shiny foil car windshield screen that I rolled into a cone shape and put it in the bucket to hold it up. I then stuck a rack in the bottom of the cone to hold my black roasting pan. It was a school project I did with my daughter.

If you add a 'Pyrex bubble' to that combination (I did a double loaf pan that fit inside 2 Pyrex mixing bowls clipped with binder clips) you can do bread or cake or roasts. in the loaf pans.... an interesting thing about large Pyrex bowls, they can lock windshield screens into 5 gallon buckets. 356f is impressively good... Just using Pyrex pie plates and a frozen lasagna microwave tray... I did kind of over browned the frozen lasagna a bit...

In this conditions, you would get similar effect just by sitting on it for two hours 😀. The major issue with this design is that the mirrors are quite flexible and they are large panels, that will disperse loads of sunlight. I've seen the design, where you cook in the "tube" and mirror is curved around it, they are less portable, but more efficient.

I liked your solar cooking video. There are many styles of solar cookers. I have had great success with my Gosun Sport and Fusion solar cooker. You might try out the Gosun Go solar cooker (small enough for backpacking.) All Gosun solar cookers can reach 350°F even in freezing temperatures and windy conditions! They cook even when its a bit cloudy -as long you can cast a slight shadow. The Gosun Fusion is a hybrid solar cooker and has a 12V heating element built into the cooking tray to cook even when the sun goes down. I live in California where we have campfire bans during wildfire conditions. The solar cookers also make for excellent emergency prep for power outages and after major earthquakes. We have cooked banana nut bread and pork tenderloins in both our Sport and Fusion solar cookers. They cook hotter than the solar slow cookers. We love following your adventures! Keep up the great work!

I can do a whole chicken on 15 minutes of fuel in my hay box, but it's a bit hefty for going into a rucksack! Worth looking into for car camping though, you can get dinner done quickly, and just not worry about it for the rest of the day as it cooks. We have a couple of videos on ours.

@@simonablokeinthewoods In the Facebook international solar cooking group 'hay boxes' had been mentioned...in effect an insulation method to extend cooking... commercial versions are Thermal cooking pots... bigger than a thermos bottle... maybe think, bring pot of rice to a boil and on a chilly day use your sleeping bag to retain heat for the 10-20 minutes the rice would take to fluff... but the rice has to reach that boil to make it work... a concept to know about, but I would not pack my Thermal Pot very far... can be useful to keep stuff hot until ready to serve.

Probably a good base camp bit of kit. I’d love to see you do a couple of other tests with it in the summer (maybe with meat, if you double-check that it reaches safe enough temperatures). One other thing I’d be interested in is the ambient temperature and the temperature of the direct sunlight - where I live, for example, on days when the ambient temp is about 30* C the direct sunlight temp can exceed 50* C, which would probably create some pretty high cooking temperatures with that kit. Cheers, Good stuff!

Good video and great to see solar cooking being promoted in the UK. A couple of observations that I hope you don't mind ... 1 - The oven bag is too small for the cooking pot. The idea is to create some 'insulation' and with a bigger bag you can trap some air so it balloons a bit then seal it with a bag tie. It will keep the heat in better. If you were doing this at home, you could use a different shaped cooking pot and enclose it in a couple of clear Pyrex bowls - they offer more insulation than the oven bags. 2 - Very little water escapes when slow cooking like this and water takes the most energy to heat. I think half of what you used would work better ... or maybe a tin of chopped tomatoes instead.

Try leaving a little air inside the bag around the pot. If the plastic touches the pot, the heat radiates out. If it's surrounded by air, the air gets hot and it's convection heating with far less conductive cooling.

Good to see that there is still hope and experiment with tech that might well find a future common usage.😀 Even more important in these times of uncertainty.🤨 Might try putting the pot stand in the bag as well, then draw the bag up, keep plenty of air in it and seal that with an elastic band or cable tie maybe, insulating the whole thing from the wind and surrounding air, which would both like to cool it. 🤔Thanks for sharing it Simon.🙂 Be well.😊

I like the idea of theses solar cookers too. I have been checking out the ones made by GoSun, they make several sizes. The smallest one is probably large enough to make a meal for one, but cooking space is limited. If you are primarily heating water for backpacker's meals and coffee, I think the small one might be perfect. Thanks for sharing.

I have 4 of the GoSun Go's they hold about 2 frozen corn dogs put in stick to stick overlapping... the corndogs will stay frozen until you open it up for cooking... cooks in about 45 minutes with good sun.... close it down and it will keep the corndogs warm for the time to see a movie... I have used a couple as before and after movie snacks... I have built my own funnel cookers for less than $50... not as portable as the Go's but 2 Quart stews to a boil in a few hours... The Go's and the other tube cookers are very fast, one reason I have 4 is the sales that I watch for on the site. A good 2 fer sale.

👍 Solar Cookers work! Obviously hot sunny climes are a definite advantage. I have one in South Africa .. developed by a group of Enterprising Canadian Grannies for rural Africa to wean the population off wood cooking fires, free the women from the arduous task of having to forage ever further for fuel, thus giving them, inter alia, more personal time for self-development. Yes, they work like a charm. Don't believe the 'marketing' .. always allow extra cooking time. Mine is not foldable and packable but is very light and easy to handle. A stiff clear plastic cover plate rounds off the Principles and Application of Thermo-Dynamics (and the related scientific Mumbo-Jumbo-Magic 😁). Ideal for 'one-pot' meals. See them as Slow Cookers aka 'Crocks' .. one advantage being that it is difficult to burn the food. Dry it out, yes .. just ensure enough water, although not too much. I don't use a baking bag .. adds to the cost of the meal (an issue for the locals) .. is not very effective and can be a schlep .. especially when the pot gets hot (and it does!). The clear plastic cover plate on mine is far more efficient. My pots are old Household ones that I painted black on the outside using wood stove paint. Any DIY'er could build their own for home use using locally-sourced material. Methinks, some sort of mechanism (clockwork?) could possibly be figured out to keep the apparatus pointed optimally towards the Sun during it's journey through the heavens. A good share .. thanks. Looking forward to a Summer version thereof. Take care ..

I have not tried these but it is interesting...uses for a windshield sun shade the kind with the silver bubble side. They made a solar oven by rolling it into a cone and using a black cast iron pot and a inner small loaf pan for bread. Another person said if you get stuck in your vehicle, you can wrap up in the windshield shade that it works like a space blanket reflecting body heat back to you. It will probably work best with insulating clothes; you have nothing to lose by trying, it does have the bubbles.

Loved the video topic! Low fuel ways of cooking veg/bean stew is a favorite thing to dream about for me :-) I was going to ask if the beans were soaked or pre-cooked, but if the pasta was still aldente, and the veg crispy, then they must have been pre-cooked. I think the mini-pressure cooker on an alcohol or stick stove is the way to go. Nice way to spend an afternoon outdoors.

Totally admire the optimism. Cooking with the sun... in early March... on a latitude North of Vancouver.... I bet you'll be burning pancakes by June.

That would be a great piece of kit in your emergency breakdown bag, in your Landie.

This is a great idea it doesn’t look very heavy and I love that solar energy is free. It will be interesting to see how you get on with it in the summer. Great video.

Another interesting video... I would definitely agree that a solar cooker is a summer invention. If its a low and slow concept, I think cooking ribs in it would be a great idea! In the summer of course🤭

OK....cold and wind conditions may not be the place/time for it, but I think it has it's place. I like the idea. It's always nice to have options.

I personally like a windy day like that. I think you're right about waiting to cook on up in the season. I was rooting for it. Safe travels my friend. I do enjoy your videos.

Well that was different. As you say good for the summer in UK. Floridians could use it year round.

I’ve seen solar cookers before and the concept seems like fun. Maybe not the most reliable for us in the U.K. lol. Saw some dude cook an entire chicken in the desert in America I think it was. Keeping the content fresh and unusual is awesome. Keep it up.

I live in Washington state Puget Sound Region....think UK with more rain it seems. I like the GoSun cookers for days it does shine and serious ... but built cheap DIY experimental cookers that will burn a frozen Lasagna, when I do get a good solar window.
