im not a baker in any means of the word, why do they put sugar syrup on the baked cake part?

dabbing the cake with extra sugar glaze will make sure it stays moist longer and also imparts extra sweetness. Often people will mix the glaze with boiled juices from fruits to give an extra pop of fruit flavor to the cake.
