Years ago I went to see country rock singer Mary Chapin Carpenter who introduced her song "Down at the Twist and Shout" by saying "this is about a place in Maryland where you go on a Friday night to get the crabs and......." 😳 The audience erupted in laughter, and she got slightly flustered.

As kids, we'd eat this outside on the picnic table next to our beachside cottage, wearing our rattiest clothes, or a bathing suit so that we could rinse ourselves off afterwards in the outside shower, which nearly every cottage had. A sumptuous meal; and there's something particularly refreshing about taking a hot shower outside on a warm and breezy beach day!

Not that I am totally untraveled but I’ve never been to Long Island. I was surprised to see so much open marsh and nice fishing space. Surely I’ll sound like a fool to some but it was cool to see. Maybe I just haven’t paid as much attention in the past videos. Anyway, that crab pasta looks amazing and I am very jealous.

The Connecticut and Rhode Island side of the Sound similarly have lots of brackish-water marshes and tidal rivers; great places to fish, crab and clam, or simply to take a walk on the mud flats at low tide.

@@kuma9069 , I'm an adventurous eater and will try pretty much anything foodwise. If I'm in somebody else's region or country, I want to try their local food, and it would be insulting if I didn't. If you take the time and effort and pay the money to visit another country, what's the point of only eating what you would eat at home? I saw a few McDonald's and Starbucks in Munich and in Paris, but we never stooped to eat there.

I would never use a hoop net like that for catching blue crabs because of the tangling and resultant net damage . We had a pyramid shaped metal trap that worked quite well and was easy to remove the crabs from. It's funny to think about it but we never really feared the claws of a blue crab as much as we did the claws of a calico crab, which would burrow into the sand in the shallows and if you stepped on one barefoot, man, them suckers would hurt you!

@@CookingWithClams, as a kid in the late 1960s, almost no one who wasn't of Mediterranean descent ate blue mussels in the US either. I'm half Greek, and we were surrounded by Italian immigrants and their kids, so we learned early on how good some of the foods were that most other people turned up their noses. My point being, in the American melting pot, attitudes can change; too slowly perhaps, but acceptance of food from "elsewhere" is inevitable.
