As children in the 1950's my father would let us pick out which Swanson TV dinners we wanted to eat while staying up late to watch "Gunsmoke" and "Have Gun will travel" on Saturday nights. We always picked fried chicken or salisbury steak. We didn't know it then, but those really were the good old days.

The sauce you made with the Salisbury steak is almost exactly what I did for a crockpot Yankee roast beef I made. My roommate is very allergic to wheat flour, so I had to figure out how to do a gluten free brown gravy using rice flour. I normally use 2 pkgs onion mushroom soup mix & 2 cans cream of mushroom soup, but they both have flour in them. So I did a brown gravy with beef broth, used fresh mushrooms & onions, rice flour, & Worcestershire sauce, heavy cream & pepper. Lol, because I was using a powdered beef bouillon for the broth, it was salty enough. It was the best pot roast I've ever made!!

I've loved and been making Salisbury steak for years. And I just learned about baking instead of frying them. It makes it so much easier. But I hadn't thought of adding some ketchup, till now. My simple gravy is 2 pkg brown gravy mix 1 can of cream of mushrooms soup and a can of beef broth all mixed together and pouted on top of the meat after flipping and bake for 25 more minutes. Works great everytime

Salisbury Steak - This was the name given to this dish during World War "I" along with Hot Dogs getting their name. Otherwise this was a "Hamburg Steak Dinner" and hot dogs were "Frankfurter Sausages." Very similar to what was tried with "Freedom Fries" during the Gulf War. A note on tasting raw mince mixtures for seasoning before cooking them off. You can microwave a scant teaspoon of the mixture for 20-30 seconds and taste for seasoning. I recently learned this trick from my reading about East Asian dumpling making and it's come in handy a number of times.

This is a reinvention of the Salisbury steak. The actual Salisbury steak as recommended by Dr. Salisbury is a bit different. Although he didn't call it such, he used it as an elimination diet considering it as a way to repair one's digestion. His version was cubed beef cleaned of all connective tissue and extraneous fats packed together just enough to stay together while cooked. His book, "The Relation of Alimentation and Diseases" is a fascinating read.

I made this last night following the recipe except that I don't have Marmite in my pantry so I used a bit of Pickapeppa sauce. If you're not familiar with Pickapeppa from Jamaica you should give it a try. I'm old enough to remember when Swanson invented the term "TV Dinner" back in 1954. My sisters and I considered TV dinners a real treat because we got them only when my parents went out for the evening, which was a rare occurrence. Salisbury Steak was my favorite. @@clorenger I'm honestly not sure. I've always skipped roux in recipes and just accepted a thinner soup/stew/sauce and/or tried to reduce more to make up for it a bit. One of my favorite meals. Yours looks delicious! Sometimes I don't have time to cook for myself and the Hungry Man has to stand duty. I've found that cooking them in a conventional oven per the instructions ( 350 for 45 minutes) is way better. Cut slits in the tops of meat and veggies, remove plastic from the nasty brownie and throw away, then when done, butter and season the beans and mashed potatoes. Not a 5 star meal but better than a handful of saltines. I'm trying your recipe this weekend!

I'm a vegetarian, here just cause your cooking is too perfect. Idk what I'll do but I'm using this information. You're the type of chef I just want to see birth meal after meal for the better than Food Network comforting content of your performing your craft. Thank you

I love Salisbury steak, my mom would make it form scratch at home. Bought a frozen one one time as a teenager, it was okay it just wasn’t what I expected. Been cooking my own ever since and never looked back to frozen.

FYI - I bought the butane stovetop that he's using and I love it. Sooo much more control over the temp than say a coleman or the like that you would buy from walmart. Its pricey but worth it. And PS - you do not have to use their branded butane refills as they state in the manual. Any brand will work fine.

My 12 year old son had the same microwave Salisbury steak a few nights ago. He too, gave it a 5/10. I figured we'd give this a try. It was a lot of extra steps for 'Ok'.

I love this and will be cooking it soon. I appreciate the idea of browning patties in oven, I'll have to give that a try. Cheers!

The breadcrumb, milk and egg mix is called a panade, at least according to ATK. I like the idea of baking the patties instead of frying them.

Mushrooms are a necessity for me. The frozen types never seem to include them, but I've never tried Hungry man. I like Stauffer's with the mac and cheese in a pinch. Still no Mushrooms 😢, but their mac and cheese isn't bad! This, and swedish meatballs are cozy winter comfort food to me! Thanks, Sonny! Homemade is everything ❤

Salisbury steak, yes! I haven't had one in years, this hits me right in the nostalgia. Also, I finally made the rosemary salt and now I'm an addict! Thanks to you, my sodium intake has probably gone up 30%!

Okay...I gave this a whirl tonight and it turned out fairly well. However...baking the patties for 10 minutes and broiling for 5 wasn't nearly enough to cook them through. Next time I'll bake them for at least 20 minutes. Also, rather than milk I used V8 juice [wife has a lactose problem] and the patties barely held together...perhaps they needed more breadcrumbs. I used ghee and lactose-free butter in the pan and that worked okay. I used boullion cubes for beef broth...next time I'll get the proper stuff. Using the cubes made the gravy more salty than we would prefer, but not too much. All in all it was a positive experience, and I'll do better next time. Thanks for this...that mushroom and onion gravy will work on all kinds of things. I'm thinking meatloaf...

You don't want them fully cooked because you'll finish cooking them in the sauce.

I make homemade Salisbury steak at least once a month. I just grill up a quality 80/20 burger patty with salt, pepper, onion powder. My gravy I make with corn starch vs flour and finish with a splash of sherry as the gravy is finishing up. Nothing like homemade if you like Salisbury steak.
