Hogue corrected the the tip burying in the handle . The newer versions being shipped have an extended handle length that allows the tip to sit deeper.

I just got one but with a wharnecliffe and can confirm that the too-short-scales are not an issue on this model. The blade sits comfortably deep within the handles and doesn't bite.

Benchmade uses omega springs, but I think that's just the type of spring and not a manufacturer. Wolff makes springs for different firearms and they're very highly regarded. Very smart move by Hogue when many Benchmade owners complain about omega springs breaking.

My guess is those with issues with axis lock springs cycle their knifes several thousand times. They are a tool, not a fidget toy. I have many benchmade and have never broken a spring.

I just got mine yesterday. Exactly the same thing happened to me when I was playing around with it. It didn’t cut me but it definitely let me know. I had to adjust my grip on it as well. It’s an issue, and I’m glad you addressed it Aaron. It would also be nice to see hogue offer a deep ride pocket clip. *hint hint But this clip is a huge improvement over the old crappy looped one on the microflip I have. Very similar to Spyderco offerings, so they’re making progress at least.

That's the exact same thing I did with my bugout. Same injury. Compared to my super freak, crooked river, and 940, I thought the tip was too close to the end on the bugout. Just like you with the hogue, I have to think about the placement of the bugout when I use it, I don't really like that.

How did the gen 2 version go? Does it have the same issue?
@austing9529
@austing9529 2 жыл бұрын
@@coralinealgae it’ll bite if you have a really meaty hand or if you have the bottom of the scales sit in the middle of your palm. If you just adjust your grip slightly it’ll be fine. Overall this knife is more “rough” feeling all over. The G-10 is grippy, the thumb studs are sharp, at no point do you feel like you’re going to slip off from anything but like I said it’s a bit more rough on the hands than other options. I enjoy it, comes with the best factory edge I’ve seen so far from any manufacturer as well.
@coralinealgae
@coralinealgae 2 жыл бұрын
@@austing9529 Thank you for sharing your first hand experience. I preordered a version with the modified wharncliffe blade and was curious about that issue. Hope the extra pointy blade shape doesn't make that issue worse. Being rough on the hands doesn't sound like a selling point for a version 2 knife. Might need to rethink my preorder.
@austing9529
@austing9529 2 жыл бұрын
@@coralinealgae everything I see compares it to the bugout. I have never owned a bugout but I do love the Deka. I’m just assuming the bugout in smoother in hand (feel wise not speaking of action). This V2 Deka is extremely smooth when it comes to action, and “disappears” in the pocket from the weight and size. It’s just noticeably rough on the thumb for deployment and the scales are textured to a point of ensures grip. As a man who came from the Maintenance world into a desk jockey situation, i can tell it’ll be fine for anyone who uses their hands and a bit noticeable for people with softer hands. Either way, it’s a slicing machine and the steel, blade shape, grip, and overall build will make it a great everyday knife or a gem you rarely use. I would maintain excitement and just appreciate the product you’re getting to the fullest extent.
@austing9529
@austing9529 2 жыл бұрын
Also! Let me know how the modified wharncliffe treats you. The standard “drop point” is plenty slicy and has a good initial puncture into standard utility cuts. I have had no issue with that blade shape but I know products like the QSP penguin have more than held their own with utility cuts. Honest truth. I carry my Ti Penguin in 154CM more often than the Hogue Deka V2 as I’m in an office roll currently. When I go back to needing a better all around bite…. I’ll get the Deka back in rotation.

Did the same thing to my hand with the Manix 2 LW. Had to adjust my grip a little and that took care of the issue. I brought that up to GPKnives and they said they've never heard of anyone getting cut like that when closing the knife. Still interested in these Hogue knives though. I had a Bugout and didn't like it all. The Axis lock was gritty and the action was tight. I hope these are better and smoother.

I actually had that exact same issue with the Mini Bugout slicing my palm. I have a Deka, several full-size Bugouts, and a few other axis lock knives. The Mini Bugout is the only one to do that to me. Was a bummer because I loved how small it was. Gave it to my wife though and she has no problems with it. It really just depends on the length of your hand I'm guessing.

I just received the Hogue Deka (SMKW Exclusive Red, White & Blue) in the mail today. I had already seen your video prior to purchasing but it was too good of a deal to pass up. I immediately checked for the palm slice issue and am happy to report that I did NOT experience this problem. I experimented by holding the knife in multiple positions and nothing came close to nicking me (with one exception). I have small hands and not very meaty palms. The only time I was able to make contact with skin was holding it higher in the palm, and forcing the meaty part up toward the blade by severely bending my wrist and forcing the knife deeper into my palm. Additionally, my knife is seated deeply and I cannot touch the tip even with my fingernail. Perhaps you got a "defective" knife? I am very pleased with this knife for all of the reasons you stated in your video, and I don't have the palm slice danger. Thank you for your review.

I understand the palm nicking thing and while it might not be a big thing, it is a thing. I have a Ganzo 753M which has what Ganzo refers to as a g-Iock (same thing as an Axis Lock) and I can't count the number of times I've nicked/sliced a small cut into the palm of my hand while closing it as you describe. Of course this Ganzo is only one tenth (or so) of what the Deka costs so this (minor?) design flaw can sorta be overlooked on the Ganzo. At the price point of the Deka however, this flaw shouldn't exist in my opinion. Not knocking Hogue now mind you, I have a Hogue Ritter RSK that is really sweet, but they could/should make a slight tweak in the blade and/or handle design to alleviate this small but niggling problem. Just my 2 cents worth on an issue that really has no bearing on me as I have no plans to purchase a Deka.

It’s crazy how these knife companies charge so much but then don’t even design them with a deep carry pocket clip. Knowing when they design them that’s what most people want. Then you look at cheap knives like a $50 Civivi even has them.

@@BrentonCarr I've never had problems with the pivots in my ball bearing Ganzos...and why does this knife have to an outdoors work horse?

I would argue that the price is very reasonable considering that it's 20 CV and has g10. If you can find me another knife that even competes with those specs I would agree with you, however I don't believe there is one.

@@kevinpanetta1554 look at Artisan knives (I think that's how ya spell it) Lots of newer brand chinese knives with great steels out their for about a 1/3rd less....G10 isn't anything special....it's used on inexpensive knives as well....

I like your reviews... this knife is not for me!! I am a big knife man... Cold Steel Recon 1 with the tri-ad lock. I have Spydercos that will put this knife to shame.
