Hi Kent, great lesson! Now I can find the notes that work within the dominant 7th chords with just finding the Mixolydian scale by finding the major scale up a 4th and playing melodies as the 2-5, or just the dominant chord, moves up chromatically. This helps me a lot with finding the dominant scale across all keys quickly. Thank you so much for explaining this and making it so much easier to understand!

Hey, KEN, this is fantastic for me. Thank you! I may want to get the backing track but I definitely can write my own with MuseScore. This is a terrific exercise in several ways because I'm forced to review my scales. Hi Kent, great tutorial... once again! I will strive to put something similar into my daily practice routine. I know my scales but for me the difficulty will be in moving from key to key, transposing simple melody ideas and chord progressions from one key to the next...that will be a challenge. I haven't figured out my personal style yet but my desire is to land somewhere between Oscar Peterson and Keith Jarrett. I should have no problem implementing these ideas into a slow non-swing ballad. I already enjoy improvising through slow ballad chord progressions, especially later in the evening when the lights are down, and my creativity starts to flow. Now this video gives me some structure to apply to that.This should be a lot of fun! Sure beats Hanon exercises. :)
@KentHewittpiano884 жыл бұрын
It's a fun exercise and I suggest, as you state, that you should start out playing it slowly, ballad style, and keep increasing the tempo, as you make progress. It will really help you to develop your ears and ability to play melodic and improv in all keys. Up and onward, brother!

I play the V7 chord and it's partner the ii chord ie: Dm7- G7- Ebm7-Ab7- etc. The lydian b7 scale is the same as the V7 scale but with a b5 which creates a more (be bop) approach to the V.

Actually I didn't felt so anxious to do this exercise. I love Piano because of Harmony. Besides this is full of harmony, the transitions are not so pleasant to so or hear I'd rather do the following : Use first transition from Cicle of 5th, and only after that you change 1 semitone (half step), then repeat this until you reach the first note. It doesn't matter too much the direction.
@KentHewittpiano884 жыл бұрын
You can invent any variation of this that you like. However the chromatic moves , whether up in whole or half steps or descending are very common and useful in jazz, and particularly in comping.
@thearno28854 жыл бұрын
What scales are you playing on the ii chord?
@KentHewittpiano884 жыл бұрын
Same scale. F major starting on G, which is dorian mode. That's the underlying scale, but then there are chromatic approaches outside the scale to the target tones.
@thearno28854 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I figured it out after I posted. I mixed up the two chord and thought it was Am7 and that’s why I was confused. With Gm7 it makes sense! I love your videos , they are inspiring and have set me on a journey the last two years that I am really enjoying.
